The Gardner Area League of Artists Spring 2025 Arts and Music Festival is Friday May 16th, Saturday, May 17th, and Sunday May 18th. Location: Red Apple Farm, Phillipston, MA
GALA states the event will consist of a fine art show, art vendors, art demos, raffles, art activities, music, food and beer.
Friday 5-16: Songwriters in the Round takes the Indoor Stage from 6-9pm. featuring Mark Fisher, Ryan Calkins, and Luke Curran The Artist’s Reception Award is at 7pm.

WGAW Radio will feature special segments on the Relay for Life this Saturday, May 10, 2025. The show runs from 12:10 to 2pm on AM 1340, 98.1 FM, or streaming to anywhere in the world. Spring Fair the Day Before Mother’s Day at Gardner Church
The Unitarian Universalist Society of Gardner is having its Spring Fair on Saturday, May 10, 2025 starting at 9am and running through 2pm. The fair is known for its variety of indoor and outdoor plants. There will be various vendors, kids activities, eco-friendly demonstrations, live music, and a Spring auction.
Highlights include a kids potting station and arts activities. You can even grab a bite to eat with the bake sale and lunch cafe. Shop for Mother’s Day with the local crafters and vendors. Stay for the raffle and enjoy the live music. Location: 66 Elm Street, Gardner, MA.

City Council Follows Economic Development Committee Meeting
On April 22, 2025, the Gardner City Council met following a meeting of the Economic Development Committee. Absent were Councilors Tassone, Mack, and Cormier.
One of the highlights of the City Council meeting was an update by Councilor Elizabeth Kazinskas on matters brought before the Economic and Community Development Committee.
In Councilor comments, Councilor Kazinskas reminded everyone about the incredible book sale taking place this week at the Levi Heywood Memorial Library, preview sale is Thursday 4-7pm with sale continuing Friday 9-4:30 and Saturday 9-4. “People would just not believe how many books they have available…”
Council President Tyros commented on the good work various Boards and Commissions have done recently and specifically complimented Chair Dana Heath of the Appointments Committee and thanked the individuals who serve the City in various capacities.
Councilor Brooks commented on the upcoming 250th celebration of the nation’s independence.

Gardner Cultural Council Holds Meeting to Crunch Numbers and Approve Requests
The Gardner Cultural Council was allocated $29,200 by the Massachusetts Cultural Council for fiscal year 2025 and held a meeting on April 22, 2025 in which funding was finalized. A total of $1400 had to be cut from amounts requested to match the allocation. The Gardner Cultural Council is one of many local cultural councils throughout Massachusetts, which support public programs that promote access, education, diversity, and excellence in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences in Gardner.
GCC has the responsibility to award grants that address cultural needs in our community, with an emphasis on providing cultural access for children, families, and the community at large.

1. The Aldrich Astronomical Society of Paxton is receiving their total request of $750 for their Spring to Fall 2025 Science in Action 2. Amy Boshco is receiving $1250 out of a $1350 request for the 4th Annual Fairy Festival of Gardner to be held on Sunday, August 24th, 2025 3. The City of Gardner is receiving $1800 out of a $2000 request for the 2025 Bandstand Concerts 4. Clear Path for Veterans is getting $2500 towards their total project cost of $15,840. Located in Ayer, the organization has build a flag woodworking art therapy workshops for veterans 5. Denis Cormier is getting $150 for Songs of Yesterday music project 6. Kevin Driscoll is receiving $449 for an April 2025 project called “Paul Revere and Friends” 7. 5 Dates of Family Heritage puppets, plays, classroom and family night will be supported with an $1800 grant to Ethnic Arts Center of Somerville 8. The Gardner Area League of Artists is receiving $1289 towards their May 16-18, 2025 Arts and Music Festival which has a total cost of just over $6 thousand. 9. GALA also receives $600 for a bookmaking workshop 10. GALA will also receive $1615 out of a $1765 request for their Annual Spring Art Show 11. $900 was awarded to Groton Hill Music to go towards after school and summer music classes at the boys and girls club 12. Holy Family Academy is receiving $3000 out of a $3250 request for Theatre at the Mount Children’s Shows 13. $850 will go towards supporting the $30,000 visitor center expenses of the Johnny Appleseed Trail Association 14. Timothy Kane of Brookfield gets $450 for a July 9th Drums and Strums project 15. Daniel Kirouac of Westminster gets $480 for an April Concert for Gardner COA 16. The Levi Heywood Memorial Library Association is receiving grants of $375, $510, $690, $825, $800, and $450 to cover New England Animals in Winter, One up Games on the Go, Animal World Experience, Tanglewood Marionettes, Crocodile River Music, and Science Heroes, taking place from winter to summer 2025. 17. $580 out of a $680 request goes to “I am Autistic, I am Fantastic, the Musical – organization is MusicDance.edu out of Randolph which also receives $600 for a Hip Hop Chair Dance for Seniors 18. The North County Land Trust is receiving $300 for the Mushroom Walk on September 13, 2025. 19. Mike Spencer of West Brookfield is receiving $1550 out of an $1800 request for the Hoftbrauhaus Bavarians. 20 The Gardner Museum gets $565 for the 1908 Tea Theatre during the 2025 Spring Lecture Series. 21. Nina Vecchi of Westminster is getting $1200 out of an $1800 request for the Ukulele Strummers Group offer beginner lessons 1 time a week 22. The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden is getting $1000 to go towards their more than $41,000 program which offers a year long Cancer Support project called “Artistic Pathways, Expressive Therapies for Cancer Support.” 23. Jon Waterman of Haverhill is receiving $300 for a September 2025 “Live Music Making History Live: History and Legends Through Song 24. And $800 will go towards the almost $20,000 total cost of the Winchendon Winds Spring Summer 2025 Concert Series. 25. Dennis Wise of Canton is receiving $680 for “The Theft of Dignity: Gardner Free Public Presentation”.

Local, State, and Federal Executives Honor Black History Month
In the City of Gardner, Mayor Michael Nicholson and Council President George Tyros issued a Proclamation which is also signed by Councilor Dana Heath. The Proclamation states in part, “February is designated Black History Month, a time for honoring and exploring the culture and history of African Americans and recognizing that our society’s rich diversity is one of our greatest strengths… Observing Black History Month provides opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of African American history and acknowledge the centuries of struggles for equality” Read the complete Proclamation by clicking on the image below:
Black History Month 2025 At the State level, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey posted on X: “Black History is American History. Black history is Massachusetts history.

Happy Black History Month.”At the Federal level, President Donald Trump wrote in a Proclamation: “Every year, National Black History Month is an occasion to celebrate the contributions of so many black American patriots who have indelibly shaped our Nation’s history.
Throughout our history, black Americans have been among our country’s most consequential leaders, shaping the cultural and political destiny of our Nation in profound ways. For years Gardner’s Bandstand Committee has met prior to the Summer Concert Series season. Its next meeting is Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 3:30pm located at the DPW office at 50 Manca Drive in Gardner. At the meeting the committee will be finalizing the 2025 Concert Schedule and discussing various contracts. They will also be reviewing their financial statements and that’s where individuals and businesses can help. All of the Summer Concerts at Monument Park are FREE, but the artists are top notch, costing much more than attendees imagine. Donations support the series and additional business sponsors and individual donations are always welcome.
How wonderful would it be if individuals and business owners showed up at the April 24th meeting with support in the form of a check. Have questions? Gardner High Winter Concert Having Several Performing Groups
The gym at Gardner High School will be the venue for the Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 7:00pm. Concert goers are asked to please use the doors near the cafeteria entrance. (Auditorium is under renovation.)
For the admission charge of $4 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, the audience will hear music and song from the talents of a number of performing groups.
Performing groups include the Jazz Band, 8th Grade Chorus, 8th Grade Band, Select Choir, Color Guard, High School Chorus, and High School Band.

Gardner Kicks off Christmas Season with Music, Merriment, and Lights
Gardner Magazine’s Collage of Photos is due to the picture and video taking efforts of Gardner’s Queen of Fun Patti Bergstrom and Merry Mayor Michael Nicholson who were both on hand with scores of people on Sunday, December, 2024.

Officially Christmas in Gardner – Lyrics by Werner Poegel, Music and Vocals via AI Festivities began at 4pm at Gardner City Hall with Music and Caroling. A parade brought event goers to Monument Park where there was more music and Santa Claus recited “The Night Before Christmas”. Triple T Family Farm provided FREE carriage rides to those attending. Gardner High Band and Gardner Middle School Chorus delighted the crowd.
Mayor Nicholson posted that carriage rides will be back during a horse drawn carriage Christmas Light Tour of the Downtown on December 19th from 4-6pm. Cost: FREE.

Gardner MA Museum Festival of Trees Set to Begin
Gardner Museum 2024 Festival of Trees runs from November 13th through December 7th.
Hours: Wednesdays and Thursdays 1pm to 4pm, Fridays 1pm to 7pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 4pm. The Gardner Museum is located on Pearl Street in Gardner. Due to the Uptown Rotary Project, the parking spaces in front of the building are more visible . There is also a small parking lot to the rear of the building with a handicapped entrance.
The Festival of Trees is a fundraiser for the Gardner Museum. Win a fabulous tree by purchasing raffle tickets. Drawing starts December 7th at 3pm. The cost for 1 sheet of tickets is $5 which includes admission (you can buy more tickets if desired). If you decide to just look at the displays, the museum’s regular admission of $3 applies.
In addition to the regular raffle tickets to win one of the displayed trees & other items, there is a special raffle for a beautiful, circa 100-year-old wooden journeyman’s chest (3 tickets for $10). Aside from looking at the Christmas Wonderland, the museum’s fall – winter photography is still on display in the first floor’s glass cases. Tickets for the special raffle for one of Jeff Sargent’s amazing framed photographs are 10$ for 2 tickets or $12 for 3 tickets. The drawing will be on December 12, 2024.

Erica Bosse advises that about 30 vendors will have more than 40 tables. Jordans Turkey Farm and Wildwood Farm both have pre order Turkey options for pick up at the market and buying limited amount available at the market. Will have produce and veggies including Rock Harvest Farm, My County Mushrooms, Guys Bees, Plant Matter Microgreens, and Growing Places and more. Will have HIP and SNAP vendors there. Also Brew Biscuits, Plainview Alpaca Farm, and lotions and salves. Also a wonderful baker and food line up with Deercreek Bagels, Victoria Coffee, and lots more including pies. The Gardner CAC will be doing a drive. There will be Live Music. It’s a mix of returning vendors and new vendors from our North central MA region.

Mayor’s Update 11-8-24 This Weekend: Annual Veterans Day ceremony Monday, November 11th at 11 a.m. in Perry Auditorium at Gardner City Hall. The Mayor stated, “I highly suggest you get there around 10:45, 10:30, just to make sure that you’re in your place because once 11 o’clock hits, that’s when people start marching in.:”
Events: On November 13th, the ever-popular Festival of Trees is coming back to the City of Gardner over at the Garden Museum for its 19th year in a row. —- Turkey raffle to benefit the Gardner CAC on November 15th at 7 p.m. at the Acadian Social Club. The mayor stated, “The CAC is one of our strongest partner organizations that we have here in the city. —- The Gardner 2024 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be on November 16th from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gardner Transfer Station —- Yard waste will be picked up again this month in the week of November 19th to 22nd, again on your normal trash day. — Special Thanksgiving edition of the Gardner Farmers Market in Perry Auditorium is Saturday, November 23rd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. —- Annual tree lighting ceremony and holiday stroll December 1st from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., starting at Gardner City Hall, going up Main Street and Central Street over to Monument Park. FREE horse-run carriage rides again this year. Memorial Lights forms available at City Hall, Velvet Goose, and John’s Sport Shop.
Advisory: Effective immediately due to extreme weather conditions, any and all types of outdoor open fires are prohibited in the city of Gardner. All forms of open flame, including for the purposes of cooking, recreational, or ornamental fires are banned until further notice. This includes fires associated with fire pits, chimneys, and outdoor fireplaces. Also the burning of brush and other yard debris is prohibited at this time. All residents are also asked to use extreme caution when disposing of smoking materials, ensure that they are fully extinguished prior to disposing of them, and only use non-combustible containers to dispose of those smoking materials.

It is a day we honor men and women who have served in the United States military and thank them for preserving the freedoms we all enjoy. City and town offices are closed on Veterans Day.
Gardner: Veterans Day Exercises will be held at 11am in Perry Auditorium at Gardner City Hall. The Gardner Elks Lodge is having a Veterans Turkey Raffle Friday November 8th at 7pm with proceeds benefitting our veterans. Doors open at 6pm, raffle starts at 7pm. In addition, the Gardner Elks will host a Veterans Ceremony Sunday, November 10th at 10am honoring “our veterans past and present.”
Winchendon: Winchendon American Legion Ceremony at 11am honors veterans in the community. Coming up on December 13, 2024 at 9am the Winchendon Wreath Fund will lay wreaths on the graves of fallen heroes at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Hubbardston: Purple Heart Ceremony on Saturday November 9th at noon on the Hubbardston common. From the town of Hubbardston website “The Town of Hubbardston is proud to be designated as a Purple Heart Town, honoring the courage and sacrifice of our service members who were wounded or lost in combat. Join us in recognizing the bravery of Hubbardston residents who have been awarded the Purple Heart.”
Westminster: Veterans and Scouts meet at the VFW Veterans Monument just prior to 11am to hold a period of reflection and thanks to all Veterans who have served and are still serving.
Ashburnham: Prior to Veterans Day on Thursday, November 7th, the Stevens Memorial Library hosts a discussion about the significance of national service from 6:30 to 7:30pm. From the library website, “Please join us for a discussion of the importance and impact of national service. A panel of Ashburnham veterans will talk about their experiences in uniform and how their service shaped their lives. The panel will be hosted by Brigadier General (retired) Paul “Greg” Smith, who will also offer readings from his recently published book, “Confessions of a Weekend Warrior: 35 Years in the National Guard.” Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing (A portion of the proceeds will benefit Montachusett Veterans’ Outreach, Inc.)”

The Westminster Cracker Festival will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10am to 5pm.
Westminster Cracker Festival is held at 10 Village Square, Westminster, MA. There’s FREE parking and a shuttle is available. The event was first held in 2015. According to the Cracker Festival website, the event has attracted thousands of people to the community celebration held every 3rd Saturday of October in the Village Center.

Demolition 73 Stuart Street: Work will take about a week or two to complete to demolish the building also damaged in same windstorm. Demolition will take place soon at the corner of Main and Willow as the former Rome building will be taken down soon.

On September 28, 2024, the combined Gardner Fall Festival and Oktoberfest was blessed with good weather for its entire duration. City Council President Elizabeth Kazinskas tapped the keg. Patti Bergstrom from the Velvet Goose showcased Rapunzel, Bluey, and others. Gardner Ale House unveiled its new sign. Cornhole was played. Beer was drunk. Food was eaten. Downtown Gardner is a Party on Saturday, September 28th
How do you like to party? Doesn’t matter, because Downtown Gardner has it all on Saturday, September 28, 2024 with Festival Fun for the Whole Family and the Oktoberfest.
Starting at 10am, Downtown Gardner merchants will begin greeting shoppers. Street vendors will be selling their wares. Restaurants will have delicious food. Music will be playing. Pumpkins will be decorated. First Responder trucks will be available to view up close. Books will be given away. Various characters will be on hand including Princess Rapunzel and Bluey. Pottery will be Thrown. Bubbles will be created.
Exciting activities will take place including the Chair Luge at 2pm. If you’re near the Gardner Ale House early, you can participate in the Run for a Beer, the Tapping of the Oktoberfest keg, and the Stein holding competition. The Town of Winchendon is expecting more than 150 vendors at its Winchendon Fall Festival to be held Saturday October 12, 2024 from 10am to 5pm. It is a rain or shine event. Attractions include live bands, bounce house, face painting, food trucks, local artists performances, activities for kids, and delicious food from local restaurants.

Mayor Michael Nicholson explained: “MEPA stated they got enough complaints from individuals stating the 8 day notice was too short of a time, even though the minimum legal requirement is 7 days, so they have ordered the meeting be reposted with a 14 day notice.”
Meeting Postponed until a date can be reposted with at least 14 days notice.
Update: 9-3-24 – Meeting has been postponed. A new date will be announced.
Gardner to Hold Public Information Meeting on Sludge Landfill
The City of Gardner will hold a public information meeting on September 5, 2024 from 6 to 8pm at Gardner City Hall’s Perry Auditorium on 95 Pleasant Street in Gardner. The City of Gardner has a plan to expand the landfill and has published a flyer on the issue, called “What the Sludge”, CLICK HERE
According to the City of Gardner,, “Leachate management is a critical environmental safeguard incorporated into the expansion of the West Street sludge landfill. The project design includes a double-composite groundwater protection system, consisting of five impermeable barrier layers, a primary leachate collection system, and a leak detection and secondary leachate collection system.” For more information here is the page on the City of Gardner website, CLICK HERE.
The City has included regular inspections and contracted environmental monitoring in the landfill’s long-term operation and maintenance plan. At the Information Session, citizens can ask questions and provide feedback.

Mayor’s Update 8-17-24 Happening in Gardner: National Night Out canceled due to weather for the 2nd time – a small resource fair will be held at City Hall in October —- The DPW is removing weeds from Downtown sidewalks using a white vinegar and dish soap mixture and sweeping the streets —- Band camp is fully underway and teachers are starting up in classrooms next week. —– Crews will be working on the Uptown Rotary on Monday. —- Salt Shed approved and construction will start soon at DPW.
This weekend: Saturday August 17, 2024 is the Farmers Market at Waterford from 9:30am to 1pm. —- Funeral services for Reverend David Cote on Saturday at Perry Auditorium. —- Concert at Monument Park is Saturday from 5-7pm.

The rescheduled National Night Out in Gardner has been canceled.
This was the post from the Gardner Community Action Committee: “We have decided to cancel the event due to chance of inclement weather tomorrow afternoon. There was a lot of work and resources put into trying to make this event happen (twice), but I guess Mother Nature was not going to cooperate this year. We are planning on hosting a resource fair and free cookout in October at the Gardner City Hall Auditorium and hope to see you all there! Details will be posted soon! Thank you for your patience and understanding!” Event was originally scheduled last week and was rained out at the last minute only to be rescheduled for August 15th – NOW CANCELED.

Cardboard and Duct Tape Utilized in Upcoming 7th Annual Hubbardston Dinghy Dash
The 7th Annual Dinghy Dash is Saturday, August 24, 2024 on Brigham Pond starting at 10am. This year there are 3 categories: Single Occupant Adult, Single Occupant Youth, and Group Vessel. Entry deadline is August 19th.
Rules specify that these boats can be made of nothing but cardboard and duct tape. Registration is $20 per dinghy. The fastest race time without sinking wins in each category. $750 in gift cards are awarded with a 1st prize of $150 and a 2nd prize of $100 in each category. The dinghy boats can have up to 4 occupants and all must wear life vests. Store-bought paddles are allowed. Captain and crew must still be in the boat when crossing the finish line to qualify as non-sinking. Rain date is the following day, August 25th.

Gardner Museum to Feature “Jeff, Unfortunately” in “Not Music” Event and other Event Listings
The Gardner Museum has published an Event Flyer featuring various events from August 7th until the end of the year. Complete Flyer, CLICK HERE.
The first event at the Gardner Museum of August 7th at 7:30pm is potentially controversial: The “Pop-up Concert at the Museum featuring artsy underground music is unique in that it promotes a performance of what is described by the artist “Jeff, Unfortunately” as “not not music” Some of the song titles are “Sick mind, Maladjustment, termination, cessation, passing, and grave.” and the music is described by the artist himself as “recorded poorly”. On the link I provide there are links to dozens of albums, which the artist does not promote as music, but as audio experiments such as intentional attempts to play out of tune and/or sing badly. There are even songs which are played backwards as “an experiment in reverse audio.” It is not what 99% of people would refer to as music, certainly not suitable for children and pets. We reached out to the Museum Coordinator Marion Knoll. In part, the coordinator stated, “Due to its nature, we changed our regular event setup (no reception, no seat reservation) and advertised it as “artsy underground music” We reached out to the President of the Museum Scott Huntoon and received no response.

Mayor’s Update 7-26-24 Events: Intertribal Spirit of the Wolf Powwow will take place on July 27th and 28th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is free admission to this event
and it is still going to take place at Camp Collier. —- International Overdose Awareness Day and Night of Hope is August 28th — Library Book Sale September 26-28 —- Farmers Market at Park Street Park Thursdays from 8:30am to noon. Larger market the third Saturday of the month at Waterford Community Center. —-Gas Line work taking place in the area near CVS. The Mayor stated, “Unitil is installing a new gas line in that area, so the road has been blocked for a couple days this week and may be impacted sometimes in the future, so we want to make sure that you are aware of that as traffic may be impeded from that for the next two or three weeks.”
Road Work: “Century Way will have their sidewalks completed on July 26th. Washington Street and Logan Street will be milled, which means the pavement will be ground down, on July 31st and August 1st, with the structures adjusted on August 5th through 7th, with the paving date of July 31st and August 1st. Additionally, work is going to be done over on Suffolk Lane in the Suffolk Industrial Park, beginning on Thursday, July 25th, going all the way through August 8th is when we think the last coat of pavement will be put on over at Suffolk Lane in the Industrial Park.”

Massive Komatsu Machine Instrumental in Maki Park Construction Progress
The machine is “moving the earth” and doing the heavy lifting in the construction of Maki Park on Parker Street in Gardner. The 3-tiered park is expected to be finished by the time Gardner has its big Downtown event on Saturday September 28th including the Oktoberfest Party in the Street , the eagerly awaited annual Chair Luge, a cornhole tournament and live music.

Gardner’s Weekly Farmers Market is every Thursday from 8:30 am to 12 noon and now takes place at Park Street Park, on Park Street, Gardner next to the Elk’s Lodge.

This weekly market is the traditional market which has been around in Gardner for many years. It is separate from the monthly Farmers Market being held at the Waterford Community Center.

Gardner Farmers Market draws almost 1000 people with 20 vendors
Erica Bosse advised us that the total count of attendees on Saturday, July 20, 2024 was 845. Total number of vendors was 20. Last market in June drew well over 750. According to Bosse, “Multiple vendors sold out or were nearly sold out both June market and today even with bringing more products.”
Erica Bosse released the following statement, “Neighbors who stopped by thanked us for having the event and we’re very happy with no complaints on traffic or parking or noise. A few vendors mentioned they have had record sales. Today we had many bring the senior coupons that were handed out at the SR center last week, as an approved market vendors who go through the training were eligible to accept and we had 3 vendors today who accepted.”
“We also have one HIP approved vendor and 3 SNAP vendors. Total revenue across the market is well over the $10k (rounding up) of the Grant we received from MDAR. We are doing great at keeping locally grown and raised food and craft right here in our community. The 3 picnic tables that MAKIs donated have been highly used throughout thr events while people rest or hang out and listen to music.”
“The farmers are showing up and the community for each other and it’s so great to see people getting out and seeing their neighbors and friends. One person who came up to me mentioned this was their first time exploring Gardner and they were incredibly impressed. The committee is putting a ton of volunteer time in and it’s showing. Next market is on Aug 17, followed by Sep 21. 9:30-1pm, 62 Waterford Street.”

Food Truck Festival Held in Gardner
The Gardner Food Truck Festival was held on Saturday, July 13, 2024. Our photos do not show anywhere close to the 22 Food Trucks announced prior to the event. However, there were over 20 separate food vendors, some with smaller than a Food Truck presentation, further towards the Colonial Hotel and on City Hall Avenue. There appeared to be a couple of carnival trucks, a few merchandise vendors, and a beer tent. Gardner Magazine reached out to Woo Trucks for comment but have not heard back as of 9:42pm on Sunday July 14th when we posted this article.
For the first 6 years, the Gardner Food Truck Festival was managed by the City of Gardner. This is the first year the event was managed by WooTrucks. Last year, social media comments included requests for more seating including tables and chairs, and some form of shade from the sun. This year when we spent about 20 minutes at the event, we observed no provided seating (last year there was some near entertainment by City Hall). We did not see any provided shade for the public such as a tent. At just after 3pm, there was no music playing at the event.
Wootrucks Events Manager Robert Ziedelis responded with some information: “There is a “core attendance” that shows up with lawn chairs, picnic blankets and coolers and spend the day enjoying the festival with family and friends. Many stay until the Trucks stop serving and the band plays its last note….As far as seating goes, it was discussed with the City. They have not had chairs or seating in the 7 years that they have held the event. Regarding a tent/tents.. This was also discussed in initial planning of the event with the City….Wootrucks provided the 24 “Hi-Top” tables that were spread throughout the event….I was also curious about the entertainment schedule. The talent was contracted/provided by and paid for by by the City of Gardner. The singer/songwriter played from 3:45 PM to 7:00 PM with one brief break….22 Food Trucks were scheduled to attend. 20 actually attended.”

A Collage of Gardner’s Birthday Fireworks
Gardner’s 239th Birthday was celebrated on June 29, 2024 with food, music, and vendors at both the PACC and the Lithuanian Club.
Fireworks lit up the evening sky just after 9pm and hundreds of people enjoyed the show.\
This was the second weekend in a row that Gardner celebrated its birthday. The weekend before was Small Business Saturday with a large event in Downtown Gardner.
Gardner was settled in 1764, became a town in 1785, and became a City in 1923. It now enters its 240th year as an incorporated entity.

Flag Day is June 14, 2024 in Greater Gardner MA
By resolution of the Second Continental Congress, the flag of the United States was adopted on June 14, 1777. “That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
The first flag day was in 1916 by Presidential Proclamation until it was officially established by an Act of Congress in 1949. While it is not an official federal holiday giving everyone a day off, it is a day to celebrate one of the greatest symbols of what is now 50 United States of America.

PACC – City of Gardner – Fireworks on Kendall Pond
The 2nd weekend of celebration for Gardner’s 239th birthday will be Saturday June 29th (rain date Sunday, June 30th)
The Fireworks show begins just after dusk. Fireworks are lit over Kendall Pond. Last year parking was not allowed on Route 2A.
There’s a full day of fun activities with Food Trucks and a Vendor Fair at the PACC. The Cornhole Tournament starts at noon. Musical Entertainment is Point the Finger from 1 to 5pm and Maximum Recoil from 6-10pm.
Regarding the Cornhole Tournament – according to the PACC, “To get the day started we have a set teams tournament (social and competitive divisions), $50 per team, with 4 round robin games into a multiple tier double elimination tournament, and tiers to be determined by wins and points. The payout will be 80%, mini trophy boards to the top first place team and cash payout.”

Confusion re Farmers Markets: Mayor Nicholson stated, “We’d also like to take an opportunity to clear up some confusion that’s been happening in the past couple weeks regarding our farmers’ markets. That is correct. There are two farmers’ markets, if you heard that S on the end of that. We have our traditional Thursday morning farmers’ market that is taking place at the Waterford Street Community Center every Thursday morning from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Additionally, our new farmers’ market is scheduled to have their grand opening on Saturday, June 15th at Waterford Street Community Center from 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. This second market will feature 20 vendors at the Rain or Shine event featuring family-friendly activities and will be held on the third Saturday of every month.”

Community Alert —- “The Gardner Police Department has seen an increase in the number of cases regarding theft of delivered packages on citizens’ doorsteps recently. In most cases, there are expensive items such as cell phones that have been delivered and stolen within minutes. Suspects often wear Amazon vests and approach the house carrying a box and then swap it out for the actual package that was originally delivered. So the Police Department is urging the public to keep an eye out, be observant, and if possible, note any identifying information of suspicious persons or vehicles, license plates, vehicle make, model, etc., if it’s safe to do so. Please contact the Gardner Police Department with any suspicious, similar activities as well.”
Remembering D-Day – The Mayor closed the update with a reflection on D-Day which was June 6, 1944. “a moment of remembrance for all of those who participated in that event 80 years ago.”

Winchendon Winds will play in Winchendon at the Unitarian Universalist Church of 4 consecutive Sundays in June: June 9, June 16, June 23, and June 30, all at 2pm. Under direction of Dr. Lindasy Bronnenkant, who is a member of the UMass Amherst music faculty.
In a Press Release it was stated, “Winchendon Winds plays on four consecutive Sundays: June 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 2:00 pm in the acoustically “live” sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Winchendon, 126 Central Street. Their concerts are free, thanks to grants and donations from supporters, including the Gardner Cultural Council.
Winchendon Winds is a 40-piece professional-level wind ensemble (brass, woodwinds, percussion) under the direction of Dr. Lindsay Bronnenkant, UMass Amherst music faculty. The Mayor spoke of various ribbon cuttings coming up. He also stated of Timpany Crossroads, “It’s great to see that plaza completely fill up now.” At Timpany Plaza, “You can actually see the new Chipotle’s building already framed out, and Five Below already has their new facade put up.” In Downtown re Maki Park, “that will be a three-tiered park over there with outdoor seating options, cornhole facilities and an outdoor stage with full electrical capabilities for outdoor performances.” Goal is to have it done by the Oktoberfest and Chair Luge this Fall.
Congratulations: Gardner Middle School 5th Grade Class had DARE graduation. Gardner High School graduation is June 1st. This week over $500,000 in scholarships were awarded

20th Annual Vietnam Veterans of America Memorial Ride
Hundreds of motorcycle riders took part in the 20th annual Vietnam Veterans of America Memorial Ride on the morning of Sunday May 26, 2024. The approximate 3 hour ride included VVA Chapter 907 and Patriot Riders Chapter 3 and began at the Polish American Citizens Club in Gardner.
The Winchendon Fire Department posted “The Winchendon Fire Department was honored to display the American Flag at the 20th Annual Vietnam Veterans of America Memorial Ride this morning. Such a humbling experience for the crews. In between numerous calls today members were able to proudly hang bunting on the fire station. WFD pride.”

Details on the New Farmers Market Opening June 15, 2024 at Waterford
The new Farmers Market will be run by Erica Bosse of Flicker Hill Homestead LLC and opens on Saturday June 15, 2024 from 9:30am to 1pm. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on the opening day.
“We are excited to bring the community together to support our local farmers, bakers, and other small businesses,” said Mayor Mike Nicholson. “This market is a testament to the collaborative spirit of Gardner, and the unprecedented amount of growth the City has seen over the last few years.”
The Gardner Farmers Market wrote, “The Gardner Farmers Market will be held on the third Saturday of each month from June through September, featuring over 20 vendors at each market. These rain or shine events will offer a variety of local products and family-friendly activities, including a bubble machine, story time, and craft activities for children, all organized by Gardner Librarian Stephanie Young. We are also excited to announce that we will have live music at at least two of the events and are working to schedule performances for the remaining two markets. We are grateful to MART for adding stops to their routes for our four scheduled markets this season, making it easier for residents to access the market.”

From the Mayor of Gardner: This week is National Police week with Peace Officers Memorial Day being Wednesday May 15th. We would like to say thank you to the men and women of the Gardner Police Department for everything you do! You all do a great job every day! The Junior Police Academy is now accepting applications! This free program will start July 15th to- July20th, for teens between the ages of 14 and 17. This Academy will be an interactive learning environment and opportunity to learn about local law enforcement. Some of the activities for the week will include Physical fitness training, mock traffic stops, defensive tactics, and investigative techniques. Applications are available at the Gardner P D or submit an application through the link on the Gardner Police Department Facebook page. Apply soon as space is limited! Gardner Fire Department: Some exciting news for the Gardner Fire Department! Our new ambulance has finally arrived at Greenwood Emergency vehicles in Attleboro. Chief Lagoy and EMS Coordinator Lieutenant Hulette went down Monday to Greenwood and made the final inspection on the new truck. It’s has taken almost two years to get the ambulance built. We hope to have it here in Gardner by the beginning of June and prepare it for City service. We also are awaiting delivery of our new engine and heavy rescue that’s due (hopefully) in September. The new vehicles will be a great and welcomed addition to our fire department with updating our fleet with new and modern equipment to serve the citizens of Gardner. The Fire Department would also like to remind everyone the annual Gardner Firefighter‘s Memorial Sunday ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 9th. Handle with Care Conference in Gardner a Successful Cooperative Effort
May began with the 1st Annual Handle with Care Conference held at Gardner City Hall. Gardner PD stated, “Proud to say the 1st Annual Handle with Care Conference was a success! Our partnership with Heywood Hospital, the Montachusett Suicide Prevention Task Force, and our other collaborators helped promote this important school-community-based effort to support children exposed to trauma.” If you would like to learn more about the Handle with Care Initiative, click this link.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early’s office provided further information, “It was an honor to attend the North Central – North Quabbin 1st Annual Handle with Care Conference yesterday at Gardner City Hall, hosted by Gardner Police Department, Heywood Hospital and the Montachusett Suicide Prevention Task Force. This event featured Keynote Speaker Professor Heather C. Updated on 5-17-24 PACC Friday Cruise Nights – Bands for 2024
The PACC Cruise Nights on Fridays precede the 4 hour concerts which occur from 7pm to 11pm. Upcoming this season beginning on May 24th are Danny Leblanc, Whiskey Johnson, the Wingmen, The Big RanDom, Mr. Strickland, Gale County, Plead the Fifth, Ben Cote, Drama Queen, Barbwire Lace, a Night of Zeppelin, Dave Malouin, Mid Life Crisis, Boogie Brown Band, and more. Admission is FREE.
The Gardner Polish American Citizens Club is located at 171 Kendall Pond Road in Gardner. These FREE Concerts are open to the public.
The Lithuanian Outing Association will also have some FREE Concerts in 2024. We have a preliminary schedule which was posted in February 2024 and will update with the official schedule when it is available.

The Purple Paw Walk Held on April 27, 2024 was held to raise funds to support victims of domestic violence and their pets. Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson read a Proclamation at the beginning of the event.
The Gardner Community Action Team posted, “We take great pride in supporting many local organizations that provide crucial services to Gardner residents. Voices of Truth, The Gardner Domestic Violence Taskforce, The Gardner Community Action Team and the City of Gardner worked together on putting this fundraiser on.”
Area residents brought their dogs and some were outfitted with costumes. The Gardner Police Department made a strong showing of support. K-9 Rocky was on hand. Various vendors displayed their wares. GCAT also posted, “We are happy that we had more participants than last year and hoping to grow this event next year.”
Bernice Richard previously stated The Purple Paws event is intended “to bring the understanding that we have a foster program called Purple Paws that we have developed in ways that we can help a victim when she is leaving her unsafe environment and she has pets.” Previous interview article with resource information, CLICK HERE.

Gardner’s Outdoor Amenities: Mayor Nicholson spoke of the Bike Trail, Dunn Park, different parks and playgrounds, and walking trails. He announced that the disc golf at Bailey Brook Park has a couple pins in. The Mayor let everyone know that an insurance claim was filed after a tree fell on $75,000 worth of new playground equipment at Ovila Case. “It is something that’s on our radar to try to fix as quickly as those claims go through…”
Construction Begins: Beginning Monday April 29th construction resumes at Uptown Rotary. “Right now, it looks like traffic will be diverted down Cherry Street from Pearl Street into Central Street.“

April Storm Topples Tree – Mayor Nicholson – “We’re Looking to See What We Can Do“
Gardner’s Christmas Tree was there when Mayor Michael Nicholson was born and when he attended what is now Holy Family Academy as a child. In his weekly update of April 5th, Nicholson stated, “And I do want to alleviate the biggest concern that I got in my office before we’re filming this video on Friday. We are looking to seeing what we can do about the Christmas tree over in Lafayette Square that blew over as a result of the windstorm. If anyone has seen any of these updates in the past four years, you all know Christmas is my favorite holiday, so I’m sure we’re going to have something in place there too. It is sad to see that giant Christmas tree fall as a result of the wind that we had during the storm and the ice, but we’ll come up with some type of plan to move forward with that. We don’t have a plan yet because it just happened, but when we do, I’ll be sure to let you all know. I was shocked to have over 50 calls yesterday and today about that Christmas tree, but it means a lot to people. But we’ll see what we can do with that.”

Gardner’s Decades-old tree was damaged during the storm. Mayor Nicholson stated, “If anyone has seen any of these updates in the past four years, you all know Christmas is my favorite holiday, so I’m sure we’re going to have something in place there too. April is Pet Abuse Awareness Month
Gardner Mayor Nicholson will sign a proclamation at the April 27th event. Bernice Richard explains the various resources which are available, how the program works for those willing to foster pets for victims, and the Task Force service area which includes Gardner, Ashburnham, Westminster, and Hubbardston. Richard explains the mechanisms and dynamics at work in Domestic Violence situations and why many victims don’t seek help until there is an emergency event. March 29, 2024 marks 7 years since the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by then President Trump. Hundreds of events were scheduled around the country.

Landscape Artist Mark Lore Comes to Gardner Museum in Gardner MA
For 5 decades, local artist Mark Lore has created art. On March 10, 2024 he greeted visitors to the Gardner Museum to open a featured exhibit of his work which will be on display through May 26th.
Gardner Museum posted, “How lovely it was to open the museum back up after our winter break! We called and many people came: Our first event this season, the opening reception for our spring exhibit, was a huge success. Don’t miss Mark Lore‘s wonderful solo-exhibit! The Gardner Relay for Life and other relays throughout the state may support the American Cancer Society, but that money is coming right back to the State of Massachusetts in the form of research grants to find cures for cancer.

Gardner Magazine conducted a poll on Social Media over the weekend regarding the Gardner Food Truck Festival. “Simple Poll – The 7th Annual Gardner Food Truck Festival may take place in July 2024. What did you like or not like about previous food festivals and what would you like to see this year? Add your own options. I had to start with one, so I put “Tables and chairs”
On the Gardner, Ma – #1 What’s going on Page! 8.4k members, we got 1.8% participation with 152 votes. Number One result: Tables and Chairs. 50%. Other results: Bigger Variety of Food Trucks 25%, Gluten Free Options 13%, (Didn’t like) Waiting an hour or more 6%, Allow Dogs 4%, and Smaller portions 2%.

Publisher’s Conclusion: It’s very obvious that people coming to the Gardner Food Truck Festival would like a place to sit and eat their food in the form of tables and chairs, and would like more trucks. On one group live music showed up as a big desire and on another, the desire for shade. So tables and chairs with umbrellas for shade or a large tent with tables and chairs inside would seem an easy solution. Live Music is usually included. In any case, if the operators of the 2024 Gardner Food Truck Festival want more people to come, they’ll provide a comfortable place for customers to sit down and eat their food. More people will come, they will stay longer, and they will spend more money. And make sure the music is an asset to the event, not a liability by being too loud and annoying customers.

Winter Fun is Close by at the PACC in Gardner MA
The Polish American Citizens Club has an active Spring and Summer Band season. This winter there’s an opportunity for fun as well. The Club is holding a benefit on February 16, 2024 for Justin. The band is Whiskey Johnson.
Coming up is Mid Life Crisis on March 22, A Night of Zeppelin on April 19, and various other events from February through March.

Mayor’s Update January 19, 2024 The Mayor spoke of attending the Governor’s State of the Commonwealth Address with others from the City. He spoke of some funding programs which will affect the City in a positive way. One item mentioned was Mass Reconnect which provides free community college to those over 25 and has resulted in a marked increase in MWCC enrollment. He also stated, “That’s how last year over 50 students at Gardner High School graduated with both an Associate’s Degree and a High School diploma at the same graduation.”
The Mayor had some thanks “I want to thank, as part of that, the members of the Massachusetts Municipal Association for electing me to their board of directors, the members of the Massachusetts Mayor’s Association for electing me as one of the officers of the Mayor’s Association, and to Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll and Governor Maura Healey for appointing me to the local government advisory committee that advises the administration in Boston on different ways to really have the state help us out on a local level to make sure we’re getting the, you know, the biggest impact we can for the people who put us into office“.

Lake Wampanoag Area Still Searching for a Permanent Home, GALA plans events for 2024
The Gardner Area League of Artists has been storing items in the Helen Mae Sauter School building since last Fall. According to GALA President Deb Giordano, due to a badly leaking roof, the group has been asked to move their stuff out of storage as the City’s insurance company is not allowing anyone in to the building for liability reasons. GALA says, “So we are again on the hunt for a new location for the arts in Gardner.”
Gardner Magazine has reached out to Gardner Mayor Nicholson about whether there is space available at the Elm Street School, the new Waterford Community Center, or the current Senior Center. We will advise you when we have more information. The Mayor has previously expressed a desire to keep GALA in Gardner.
GALA events for 2024 include: Art and Music Festival taking place May 18 & 19, 2024 at the Red Apple Farm and Brew Barn in Phillipston. Artists and Artisan vendors are still being sought for the event. For more information, visit the GALA website, Click Here.
