- Great Teachers (10/28/2022)
Why Gardner MA has Schools of Great Teachers
The City of Gardner MA is proud of its achievement in providing students with some of the nation’s best educators. What is the secret formula? It may be a great recipe, but it appears to be based on simple common sense. First, Gardner tries to hire the very best teacher for any opening which comes up. Then it follows a 17 page Professional Development Plan which goes into detailed descriptions of the manner in which the high caliber of teaching will be maintained in the Gardner Public Schools through very specific proactive efforts. Expectations are clearly defined. Resources are provided to teachers. And teachers themselves are constantly working on improvement. The result: Great Teachers, and ultimately more successful students from kindergarten to graduation. To view the actual Professional Development Plan, click here.
In a recent interview, Gardner Superintendent of Schools Mark Pellegrino credits the School Committee and City Council for being supportive of funding for District needs, contributing to the more successful Educational Environment existing in Gardner today. Complete interview, click here.

Gardner Magazine Publisher Werner Poegel interviewed Dr. Mark Pellegrino, Superintendent of Gardner Massachusetts Public Schools. We spoke about Accelerated Development in Gardner Education – Progress in the Schools, the Gardner Success Story. Listen on any device. Click Play.
We of course spoke about the New Gardner Elementary School and other physical changes throughout buildings in the District. We spoke at length and with specifics on how Gardner has managed to draw the attention of other Districts in the United States and abroad for its record of accelerated improvements to Education in Gardner. The rigorous curriculum begins with Kindergarten and continues throughout all the grades, culminating in some very unique programs for High School students including Innovative Pathways and various means of taking college courses and getting college credits.
Dr. Pellegrino credits the teachers, the other administrators, and staff for their contributions to Gardner’s momentous achievement, although he does admit coming up with some ideas on his own. He also thanks the Mayor, City Council, and School Committee for making investments in the School System.
One of the chief differences in Gardner Public Schools has been the recent success in tailoring education to students’ specific needs, to assess progress based on data, and make adjustments to ensure student achievement. The Superintendent admitted that it is the goal of Gardner Public Schools to be a model for other communities in the Nation and it appears Gardner is well on its way towards that benchmark.
We discussed Art, Music, and Athletics as well. And another difference with Gardner Public Schools which should please parents – One of the goals of the School District is to foster greater parental involvement. - Genuine Gardner Today (9/15/2022)
It was a time to celebrate what is genuinely Gardner on the beautiful day of September 15, 2022
This is our regular feature, “Genuine Gardner.” What is special about the Chair City.
Patriotism is Genuine Gardner
Work continued at 42-52 Parker Street, but only the eagle eye would spot the United States flag on the building.
Undoubtedly, the owner put it there out of a sense of respect, not knowing it would be noticed. But it was. And it is this sense of goodness which is Genuine Gardner. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.
Education is Genuine Gardner
The pristine and majestic new Gardner Elementary School stood as a testament to Gardner’s bright future. This hall of learning welcomed students on September 15, 2022 and is Genuine Gardner.
Monument Park
Monument Park was utilized over the summer for concerts enjoyed by many. In fact, it was a summer with no Saturday rain outs. On this day, Monument Park was a source of information from the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center.
Supporting our veterans is also Genuine Gardner.
Embracing Gardner’s Heritage
The Chair was hardly noticed by most who passed it by. But this Chair in the sign at Parker Street and West Lynde Street serves to illustrate the wonderful heritage of furniture making which has graced Gardner MA over the course of time.
This heritage is Genuine Gardner.

Learning and Knowledge is Genuine Gardner
Serving those who thirst for knowledge was the Levi-Heywood Memorial Library, also proudly displaying the Star Spangled Banner.
This wonderful repository of culture and learning is Genuine Gardner.
The new Maki Park will be using a terraced approach due to the slope of the terrain. It is expected to be a beautiful addition to Downtown Gardner.
The Start of Maki Park
The Transit Man and his fellow Surveyor became part of the cycle of Gardner MA History on September 15, 2022 as they marked off part of the future Maki Park on Parker Street. It will be another way for Gardner to be a great place to Live, Work, Play, and Visit.
Nature is Genuine Gardner
While everyone in Gardner did their thing, the creatures of Crystal Lake enjoyed a beautiful day quacking about.
Yes, even the ducks of Crystal Lake are Genuine Gardner.

Go Forward with Gardner MA – An Interview with Mayor Michael Nicholson
In an interview with Gardner MA Mayor Michael Nicholson conducted by Publisher Werner Poegel on Monday September 12, 2022, the Mayor spoke candidly about how Gardner is meeting the challenges in its present and why the Chair City has become so attractive to individuals wishing to relocate, businesses interested in a place for success, and industries desiring a good place to make things. While in the process of evolving from its past, Gardner has inadvertently drawn a huge amount of attention and has even become a model to some for how a small City should operate. Our interview is with one of the City of Gardner’s greatest cheerleaders, Mayor Michael Nicholson. Entire interview and article text, CLICK HERE.

- Vibrant Downtown (8/31/2022)
Publisher’s Editorial – Downtown Gardner MA Showing Vibrancy
With all of the positive improvements in Downtown Gardner, it’s no wonder there’s renewed enthusiasm.
Downtown Gardner MA is truly a special place, about to begin a period of renewed vitality.
Here’s what I think needs to happen going forward:
1. Efforts should continue to spearhead rehab efforts where ever they are needed. No detail should be overlooked. —- 2. Gardner Square Two should get in the habit of listing its events with at least minimal details at least one year out. —- 3. Downtown Merchants need to get behind the newly revitalized Gardner Square Two. They are now ready for action and need your support. The best way to do that is to become an active member if you have a business. If you’re an individual Gardner citizen, show your pride in Downtown by getting an individual membership. —- 4. We should make a big deal out of this Christmas season. As Gardner became a City in 1923, this Christmas 2022 is Gardner’s 100th Christmas as a City. —- 5. Efforts should continue to fill up available storefronts. There are so many monetary incentives in place, you’d have to find a reason not to open a store or other business location in Downtown Gardner. —- 6. Downtown Gardner. This is the year its greatness really starts to take off again!

Gardner MA Successfully Tackling Education Puzzle in Gardner Public Schools
Employees of the Gardner School District have received praise from Administrators, Public Officials, and School Committee members for their work during the pandemic. However, much of the superior work done to improve the learning experience in Gardner Public Schools has gone unreported.
Gardner MA Public School Ratings should now be listed as Good to Excellent. Gardner has significantly updated its curriculum in the last couple of years or so for every grade level from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Measurable Statistics show that Gardner Public Schools are increasingly becoming EDOCs, (Education Destinations of Choice). Gardner Superintendent Mark Pellegrino will be interviewing with us soon to go over details of Gardner successes.
Gardner publishes its Curriculum Guide for each grade and exceeds State of MA requirements. Gardner has a system in place for ongoing Curriculum review. It even has a Social/Emotional Learning Framework. There’s a renewed focus on the Arts. Student Indoctrination is specifically prohibited as students are taught how to think, but not what to think. - Progress (7/28/2022)
Ideas > Concepts > Planning > Construction > Successful Conclusions in Gardner MA
There’s pent-up impatience in Gardner MA for approved projects to be completed. At left we show the results of a completed construction project started in 2021 at the Gardner/Templeton line. First, there was land, which was subsequently cleared. Now, there are families living in these homes, adding to Gardner’s “New Growth.” All projects take time and when successful, they are a beautiful thing. Patience is too.
In the next couple of years, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised as already approved projects get underway or reach completed status, additional projects get approved, and new project ideas are revealed for the very first time. It’s an exciting time for PROGRESS in the Chair City and its citizens are living witnesses to it. Note that in an interview with Gardner MA Mayor Michael Nicholson on July 6, 2022, he told us that he has 5 to 6 ideas in his head he hasn’t told anybody about – we’ll keep you posted…

- Junior Police Academy (7/28/2022)
Gardner PD – Junior Police Academy – Why It’s Such a Big Deal
20 students have been congratulated for completing the Gardner Police Department Junior Police Academy and the officers have been thanked for putting it on. This is the third year the Gardner PD has run the program and its largest class to date. The Academy was fully funded from the Commonwealth’s Shannon Grants, which totaled $11.2 million dollars across the State of Massachusetts.
Community Safety Initiative Grant
In February, the Baker-Polito Administration announced the Senator Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Safety Initiative Grant (CSI) would fund 15 municipal grants consisting of 27 cities and 14 research partners. Governor Baker in February 2022 stated,” “The long-term positive impacts of the programs funded by Shannon grants demonstrate the importance of a collaborative approach to addressing youth violence and improving the safety of our communities.” And Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito stated, “Shannon grants support the collaborative spirit and vital teamwork that achieves safer communities, violence reduction, and sustained positive life decisions for at-risk youth.” The 2022 award for Fitchburg with Gardner as a partner community was $416,812.00 More details, CLICK HERE.
Why Demographics Prove it is so Important to Engage Youth
The percentage of the population which lives in poverty in Massachusetts is: 9.4%, Fitchburg: 15.7%, Gardner: 13.9%. There have been changes in crime for young people ages 10 to 24 from 2017 to 2021. Simple assaults in Massachusetts decreased 25%, but in Fitchburg/Gardner decreased 37%. Aggravated assaults in Massachusetts decreased 20%, but in Fitchburg/Gardner decreased 61%. It’s important to productively engage youth as the High School Dropout Rate in Massachusetts was 1.6%, Fitchburg 3.7%, and Gardner 3.6%. Details in pdf, CLICK HERE.
Core Strategies
The OJJDP Comprehensive Gang Model is “a set of five core strategies—community mobilization, opportunities provision, social intervention, suppression, and organizational change and development—that offer a comprehensive, collaborative approach designed to prevent and reduce gang violence.”
Overview
Here’s an overview of the Five Core strategies, CLICK HERE. And here is a Law Enforcement Guide, CLICK HERE. Fortunately, Gardner is blessed with a community not filled with all of the negative experiences of elsewhere, and even discussing it may come as a surprise to some, but as much as Gardner would wish it, it’s not totally crime free. That’s why efforts like the Junior Police Academy are such a Big Deal – Gardner wants the character of the Chair City to continue moving in a positive direction and for there never to be a huge gang problem.
Cadet Training
Handouts for Cadets from the Junior Police Academy are intense and include many aspects of law enforcement training. CLICK HERE. Graduates certainly have an appreciation for the rules of society and perhaps some will decide to become Greater Gardner MA Police Officers as adults.

- Satellite Internet (7/19/2022)
Unlimited Satellite Internet now available in Gardner MA and some area towns
Elon Musk’s venture Starlink Satellite Internet is available to Gardner residents, and other area towns such as Winchendon, Phillipston, and Templeton. Currently, the price is $110 per month for residential plus the cost of equipment. Other satellite services are available to Gardner, but here is the difference: the bandwidth limit and latency. Starlink offers unlimited internet while others have considerable limits, making the use of streaming apps not feasible in the past. With Starlink, you can do whatever you did before with Cable internet. Cost is not cheap, but it is a viable alternative, and a great backup for any business relying on the World Wide Web. Note that Fitchburg and Leominster still have to wait. There is more information on their website and you can check your exact address for availability. CLICK HERE.
We checked out exact cost. You’ll pay a total of $686.44 upfront for equipment and then billing will start within about 2 weeks of shipping out to you. Currently $110 monthly.

Mayor Nicholson explained that several Eagle Scout projects have made a difference in Gardner this summer including from newest Eagle Scout Quinton Lemmick (Scout Super Heroes)
Turns out the DPW has some Super Heroes of their own. We call them the “Mulch Makers”, turning trees they’ve had to take down into wood chips to be used at the Dog Park and at the Golf Course, saving the City lots of money by not having to purchase them.
The DPW has also been instrumental in other Super Hero work including starting construction of 2 new Shade Pavilions at the Gardner Dog Park, replacing 4 dead ash trees at Monument Park with new trees, and replacing Downtown Gardner sidewalks. However, the City was faced with a Super Villain who went under the caution tape to walk on the wet concrete. The Villain was promptly arrested by Gardner PD Super Heroes and will be held financially responsible for the repairs which needed to be made.
Many in the community who serve Gardner are Super Heroes, don’t you think?

- Local Treasures (7/13/2022)
The Heart and Soul of Gardner MA: Independent, Locally-owned Small Businesses
According to IndependentWeStand.org, a number of things happen when you decide to Shop Local. $68 of every $100 spent at locally owned businesses stays in the community helping to create local jobs. Local business owners know you and you know them, and local business owners tend to support community causes. See example below: Greater Gardner MA residents can take advantage of the expertise at a locally owned business by letting one of your friends or neighbors serve your needs.
Gardner Square Two Recognizes Positivity
Patti Bergstrom, President of Gardner Square Two and owner of the Velvet Goose stated, “I do feel as if there has been a positive change in the energy and attitudes in our community. As a small business owner, I have met so many new people in the past few months…people who live locally and are just now discovering some of the local treasures. Grateful for the support of our community. I have spent 35 years at The Velvet Goose and it is definitely My Happy Place. You are all invited!” Want to take Patti up on her invite? Local Business Owner Gives Back
Anne LeBlanc of John’s Sport Shop recently won a big prize in a contest – a kayak full of goodies. Boys & Girls Club of Gardner had a Fundraising Gala last month raising over $224,000, $7000 of which was from the Summer Fun Raffle with the Kayak and merchandise worth $1500. But, guess what Anne did? Anne donated most of her win to Cancer Support Fund of Central Mass. Inc. so that more people could benefit by yet another charity drawing. Patti Bergstrom stated on July 13, 2022, “So grateful that I live and work in this kind and generous community.” John’s Sport Shop website. — Directions

- Municipal FM (7/10/2022)
Costs involved
Because of the relatively low power involved, cost would not be a huge factor as the transmitter and antenna would be fairly inexpensive. Engineering is relatively simple and the F.C.C. engineers in Washington D.C. could help for FREE. Gardner already has a television studio at the High School on Catherine Street. Gardner MA produces high quality video of City Council, School Committee, and other Municipal Meetings, and a weekly Mayor’s update. Visit the City of Gardner YouTube page here.
Gardner MA may consider its own Low Power Municipal Radio Station
Last year, an F.C.C. window closed on applications for regular licenses on the non-commercial band. Sometime soon, a window will open for additional low power FM applications on the 92 -108 part of the band. That’s where the interests of Gardner come in. Does Gardner want to have a station like the City of Leominster has had since January 26, 2017, which is licensed for 21 watts with an antenna 210 feet above average terrain? See what Leominster is doing with it. Website.
How Far would it Transmit?
If the license was granted, Gardner High School on Catherine Street could serve as a transmitter site as it’s roughly in the middle of Gardner geographically. Gardner City Hall might also cover the City. According to the Federal Communications Commission, Low power FM has a radius of about 3.5 miles. Gardner is only 23 square miles which in this case presents an advantage – less square footage to cover with a transmitter. The calculated coverage area would be A=πr2=π·3.52≈38.48451mi² using 3.5 as the radius of a circle and calculating the area of the circle. The math shows much of the Chair City could be covered, perfect for emergencies or whatever Gardner would deem to be in its interests. Due to the low power, the coverage might have dead spots due to terrain. That is why commercial stations which cover more than one community operate with substantially more power.
We asked the Mayor in an interview on many subjects July 6th:
Poegel: “Mayor, so sometime soon, an FCC window is going to open, allowing the City of Gardner to apply for a low power FM license, similar to what the City of Leominster already has. Does the Chair City have an interest in pursuing this to protect its interests?”
Nicholson: “I know we’ve talked about that with our Emergency Management Director Paul Topolski, because we do have a radio transmitter that we can use when we have larger events, but we don’t have a signal that is our own. So it is something we preliminarily looked at, but it’s not something we’ve had on the radar until we just heard the rumblings that the F.C.C. might be opening up a little more, so it’s a very recent conversation that we don’t have any details on yet on our end, but it is something that did spark a conversation.” Listen to the entire interview.
What frequency would it be?
Low power FM is between 92 and 108 on the FM dial. You find out what’s available by doing a search on the FCC website. You need to know the latitude and longitude of the proposed transmitter location. Finding a frequency is as simple as going on the F.C.C. site, inputting latitude and longitude specs, and doing a search. Gardner City Hall at 95 Pleasant Street is at 42 34 26, -71 59 45 and Gardner High School is at 42 34 39, -71 58 45. Both searches yield the same available frequencies, 97.3 and 102.9. However, Steve Wendell, owner of WGAW has a construction permit for a commercial station at the 97.3 frequency for Orange MA, so our bet is the City would pick 102.9 if it’s interested in pursuing the project.

- Gardner Plan (6/27/2022)
Gardner MA City Centennial marks halfway point in Urban Renewal
Often Social Media posts reflect the impatience of Gardner residents. Whether it’s paving, rundown buildings, or desired improvements, the comments are numerous. So Gardner Magazine thought it would be a great time to remind our readers that there is a 25 year plan. Over a decade ago, in 2011, a 143 page Urban Renewal Plan for Gardner Massachusetts was published. In the background section it stated, “Gardner is poised to promote revitalization opportunities within a significant portion of the Downtown area, including areas of commercial/retail, office, residential, manufacturing, and public space land uses.” It went on to describe the past history of Gardner including the steady decline of the Downtown area after the 1950s, the decline of furniture manufacturing, and Gardner’s slow growth rate compared to the rest of the region, including population. Fast forward to 2022: Significant progress has been made in revitalization of Downtown Gardner with various projects underway. Manufacturing is coming back to Gardner with some significant success stories. A number of businesses have come to the Chair City in the past couple of years, even with the challenges of the pandemic. The population of Gardner is the highest in its history.
Gardner Challenges Were Identified
The plan identified various challenges including, “88 percent of the structures predating World War II” and “approximately 39 percent of the properties with buildings in the URA were found to be in moderate or severe disrepair.” A significant number of successes have already been documented, but in short, progress takes time. The National Grid substation on Park Street was identified as something to redevelop as recreational open green space. This was recently approved by the Gardner City Council with an appropriation of $260,000 from free cash. It was also desired to upgrade the Greenwood Memorial Bath House. However, since that time, the huge cost involved has precluded progress on that front and various other plans have been discussed with nothing finalized as of yet. Redevelopment of the Goodnow-Pearson Building was identified as a goal and was completed. Redevelopment of the Maki Building was identified, however, the building was instead torn down and will soon be Maki Park as $180,000 was recently approved by the City Council. A park has replaced the former theater on Parker Street. Rear Main Street was specifically mentioned and now a huge project is in the works. The plan was to construct a new Police Station and Gardner has a beautiful building today. The goal of redeveloping Heywood Wakefield III and IV into residential and assisted living was achieved.
Goals and Successes
One of the goals of the URP is to ““set forth a series of public improvements that together with private investment will transform Gardner into a thriving 21st century City.” Just look at the 99 Restaurant and surrounding buildings, the new Health Center being constructed near Walmart, and the various construction projects either completed or currently underway at Heywood Hospital. Various buildings in Downtown Gardner have recently changed hands with plans for renovation into modern structures with some renovation currently underway. Manufacturing employers in Gardner are thriving and are hiring. The Urban Renewal Plan contains various maps, charts, and property lists. If all of the goals in the 25 year plan are achieved, the results for Gardner will be truly transformative. In any case, there can be no dispute – Gardner MA is on a positive, upward trajectory. Read the 2011 plan for yourself. Here’s the pdf.

Successful Seaman Paper Toured in Gardner MA
City and state officials recently took an in-depth tour of the 75,000 square foot Specialized Paper Converting Facility. According to Seaman Paper, it’s “an important part of Gardner’s manufacturing industry and Seaman Paper’s primary production plant for food service converted products. “I saw a lot of excitement in their faces for all of the amazing activity on the floor. I feel they appreciated what we were doing, the success of our business, and for providing great jobs for the greater Gardner area,” said Specialized Plant Manager Glen Welsh.
Jessica DeRoy, Gardner Economic Development Coordinator said, “I am in awe of what you can do daily, and how all the machinery operates. Your sustainability packaging and plans are impressive. - Relay Draws Hundreds (6/11/2022)
Greater Gardner MA Relay for Life Draws Hundreds, Exceeds Goal
The Gardner MA Relay for Life was held from Friday June 10, 2022 at 6pm to Saturday June 11, 2022 at 2pm. One of 2500 events of its type held in the United States, the event has raised almost 15 million dollars in 29 years. This year’s goal of $100,000 was announced to be already exceeded at $105,000 when the event began. The opening ceremonies included a celebration of local cancer survivors and Cancer Survivors took a victory lap to kick off the Relay for Life.
The community -based walk event was successful once again. The Mayoral Challenge was won by Gardner with 141 Relayers. Town of Westminster was 2nd with 64, Leominster 3rd with 42, and Fitchburg 4th with 32. When this was announced by Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson, Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzorella put on the iconic Orange Gardner shirt.
Friday Evening Theme Hours
This year’s theme was “Tune Out Cancer, Tune in Hope” and a great day of entertainment and activities was had by all including on Friday night hours such as “Party Like It’s the 1980s”, “the 1950’s Hour” “1960’s Hour”, and a Western Hour/Country Style just before midnight when the sound system went silent until 6am Saturday.
Saturday Themes
There were various silent themes overnight followed by “Revelry, Good Morning Relayers” at 6am. The Caregiver Reception started in the Big Tent at 9am. The Band “Back to the Garden” performed at 11am. Noon brought line dancing. Closing Ceremonies were held from 1pm to 2pm with special recognition, awards, and a very special last lap in which each team could participate. There were food vendors galore on both days of the event.
Due to the pandemic, the last full Relay for Life was held back in 2019 and many were happy to see it back again.
Event Cleanup
It happens – an event is held and there’s evidence the next day because there’s trash and debris all over the place. The site of the Relay for Life, however, is already clean. At just about 4pm, just 2 hours after the culmination of the event, it was obvious a great cleanup team did miracles in restoring the grounds at Mount Wachusett Community College to pristine condition.

- Gardner MA Budget (5/30/2022)
Gardner MA Budget Increase Compared to Other Cities
Mayor Michael Nicholson has stated he made an effort to keep costs down in the 2023 Gardner Budget. Is that true? We did a comparison to other cities in Massachusetts to see how Gardner stacks up. With a proposed budget of $74.85 million, the Gardner budget is an increase of 5.9% over 2022. Leominster’s budget of $150.6 million is up 9.9%, Fitchburg’s budget of $149.6 million is up 7.25%, and Boston with a $4 billion budget is up 6.4%. The Chair City of Gardner MA has the lowest proposed budget increase of any of these cities. So did the Mayor make an effort to keep costs down, even in the face of inflation? The numbers say yes. And don’t forget, Gardner just had a perfect audit of its finances, the first in decades. Citizens can feel confident that Gardner is well managed. Not opinion, objective fact.

Local Artist Gardner Wood presents Gardner MA Mayor Nicholson with Big Chair painting – Has another Patriotic painting hidden underneath!
The Mayor stated, “This was a great surprise today! Thank you to local artist Gardner Wood for stopping by today to donate this painting of the Big Chair to hang in the Mayor’s Office!” Gardner Magazine was able to interview artist Gardner Wood.
About the Artist
Artist Gardner Wood randomly donates his work to area businesses including a local diner in Winchendon. He earns a living by working at Mount Wachusett Community College which is where he says he met Mayor Nicholson while adding a cowboy to another work for the VetTech class at MWCC.
Story of the Big Chair Painting
He utilized various online photos in composing the painting, which is a 16×20 acrylic and took him about 4 hours on a Saturday to complete. But, there’s even a more interesting story behind the painting, it’s not the only one on the canvas. Gardner Wood took an existing painting featuring a nature scene and an eagle and painted over it. So what the Mayor just hung in his office prior to the Memorial Day holiday also honors those who have given their lives for our country, a painting with an American Eagle hidden under a painting of Gardner’s iconic Big Chair. Gardner Wood also states that he usually signs his paintings “G. Wood”, but in this case had to use his full name since it was for the City of Gardner and that’s his first name. Thank you to Gardner Wood.
The Inspiration of the Work
We asked, What inspired you to paint the Big Chair and Gardner Wood responded, ““I work in Gardner, I live in Winchendon, I do have my artwork in a local diner…. I started a personal project… My main goal is I want to randomly donate a painting to local businesses. I’ve already started in Winchendon. That led me to be inspired to do the Chair for the Mayor. I met him and he’s very friendly, very nice. We basically talked about it. …It’s just my personal thing that I’ve taken upon myself to do….He seemed very excited about it.”
First Time’s a Charm
Gardner says this is the first time he’s ever painted the Chair. “I went on the computer and pulled up various different pictures, so I got all the pictures of the Chair. I did it in a Saturday morning for the most part.” “I paint for the people. I don’t paint to make money.” In the diner, I will listen and see what people are looking for. I will randomly give them to children. I enjoy doing it.” Gardner went on to say, “The chair, that painting is very unique for me because of course my name is Gardner Wood and I sign all of my paintings, G. Wood, basically because it’s a long name. But this one I felt I had to, so the bottom of that chair, the painting, I wrote Gardner Wood, my full name.
Hidden Painting
“Actually I can tell you a little bit more about it too. I am a little on the impatient side, maybe that comes with being an artist. I was at my house and I was looking and I didn’t have any 16 by 20s, I didn’t want to do a small one, I wanted to do a big one. So basically I grabbed one of my old paintings. The original painting was basically trees on both sides, and basically an eagle flying. In the painting, the eagle was too small…it was one of my first types of paintings, so I said, ok here’s a 16 by 20, so I painted over it. So if you were to actually xray through that, you’d actually see another painting under it. …That’s what happens when you don’t have a whole pile of good canvas….The painting was ok, but the eagle was too small, then it just worked out good.”
Let us note the historic Gardner Big Chair painting was placed in the Gardner MA Mayor’s office in May 2022. Thank you Gardner Wood for your generosity of time and of spirit.

- Water Quality (5/20/2022)
Gardner MA 2021 Water Quality Report Shows High Manganese, Water Safe to Drink
The Gardner MA 2021 Water Quality Report has been released. CLICK HERE. For many years, the manganese level in Gardner Massachusetts water has been higher than desired, resulting in some local complaints of bad taste and the visible staining of toilets etc. While Gardner water overall has been deemed safe, we have obtained detailed information regarding Manganese for those who are concerned about the issue. Ten years ago, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published a 556 page report on Manganese which you can view from Gardner Magazine. CLICK HERE. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency produced a Manganese Report. CLICK HERE.
Gardner Water Corrosion Issue
For those concerned about corrosion caused by Gardner water, Corrosion Testing Laboratories Inc. produced a document dated August 18, 2015 and entitled, “City of Gardner Leaking Copper Coils Failure Investigation” CLICK HERE. The reports indicate that “failures were centralized around the water treatment facility that uses surface water as a source.” For those citizens wondering why Gardner is defending itself against homeowner claims, it is because the City of Gardner is located in a region of the US that has surface water with a low alkalinity and it is still undetermined whether the City has any liability over the issue. While City officials are not commenting publicly about Gardner water at all, our investigation shows that over the years Gardner has been making attempts to solve the issue, but just hasn’t been successful. The truth: Sometimes a problem is not easily solved despite best efforts. Unfortunately that doesn’t help the homeowners who have had uncovered heating system expenses and why the problem is the subject of an ongoing court case.

On April 29, 2022 Mayor Nicholson posted this on Facebook, “If you were driving by the rotary behind Hannaford today you may have seen Christopher Luke starting on his new mural as part of our new art initiative. While I believe the artist should be the one to reveal what they’re working on, I can tell you it’s going to look great and is a tribute to our old chair manufacturing past. (The letters and symbols are his version of grid painting to help correlate the wall to the preliminary sketch)” Now, here is what this beautiful mural looks like today.

Gardner MA Gets Rid of Potential Russian Security Risk
At the City Council meeting May 1, 2022, Mayor Nicholson is asking for about 12 grand to fund the new security software for the City’s IT needs. Gardner is replacing Kaspersky software with a variety of items from Crowdstrike. On March 30, 2022, the threat was deemed severe as Kaspersky was added to the Federal Watchlist and every City Hall employee was asked to reboot their computer before going to lunch so that Kaspersky could be automatically removed. The default Microsoft Antivirus automatically turned on after the offending software’s removal. However, it is not deemed sufficient and therefore Crowdstrike is being implemented to keep the City secure.

- Time Travel (4/18/2022)
Fictional Time Traveler Journeys to Gardner MA Past and Future
1900: Our time traveler is on a mission to find the perfect time in Downtown Gardner, Massachusetts. Journeying incognito to the Center of Gardner 100 years ago, he finds commerce in full swing. Some of the buildings exist to this day, some have been replaced.
1950/60: Turning the crank of his time machine, our Time Traveler finds himself viewing a Gardner police officer directing traffic over 60 years ago, near the intersection people have been fussing about. Traffic existed then as it does now, but ideas of how to handle it have evolved and changed over time. Notice a thriving business district in Downtown Gardner.
2020s: Our Time Traveler journeys to present day and finds an attractive Downtown Gardner MA with a different traffic pattern and different businesses. The future of Gardner MA is only limited by the imagination and fortitude of its residents, community leaders, and government officials. With the recent progress made and additional projects announced, who knows what the future could hold for Gardner MA.
2200: Our Time Traveler ends up in the year 2200. History shows that a forwarding-looking Gardner Mayor, City Council, and Business Community in 2022 continued to foster a period of positive growth in the Chair City. By the way, it is said that in the year 2200, Gardner MA is once again the undisputed Furniture Capital of the World.
Residents of Gardner MA have every reason to believe the future of the Chair City is going to be bright as the community works together.

- Kids Colds (4/17/2022)
Are Snot Nose Kids Coming Back in Greater Gardner MA?
One of the unintended consequences of masking children during the pandemic has been the effect on immune systems and the transmission of other illnesses. Not only was Covid spread possibly prevented, but also the incidence of colds and flu was greatly diminished. Less kids were getting sick with other illnesses. With masks coming off, colds and flu are expected back.
Snotty noses in babies and toddlers can be treated with saline spray or nose drops available over the counter. For older children, there’s Children’s Tylenol Cold and Flu or Dimetapp Cold and Cough. Other items to stock in the medicine cabinet are ibuprofen, acetaminophen, petroleum jelly, hydrocortisone 1 percent, antibiotic ointment, cough syrup, menthol rub, honey, kids vitamins, thermometers, and other over the counter remedies. Of course, for specific concerns, check with your family doctor or pediatrician.

Good news is actual flu cases in Massachusetts are shown as low on the most recent CDC Influenza Map. Let’s hope the trend continues.
