New Conservation Agent Announced at August Conservation Commission Meeting

A local resident urged the board to maintain an enforcement order on the Gardner Landfill site due to fears that the current infrastructure cannot adequately manage heavy rainfall. The commission also reviewed a request for tree removal on Brookside Drive, ultimately advising the homeowner to hire a certified arborist to justify the safety risks to his property. The board discussed a cease and desist action regarding unauthorized soil dumping on Clark Street. There was also discussion on the necessity of public outreach to educate residents and contractors about local wetlands ordinances.

National Grid representatives sought relief from construction restrictions to allow heavy drilling equipment to remain in wetland buffer zones overnight, though no vote occurred due to a lack of a quorum.

When Chief Bennett concluded, the room burst into applause. For some reason, the techs recording the meeting muted that AUDIO. Proof of this action is shown in our graphic of the meeting AUDIO at left – why they did it, who knows. But to be accurate, residents at the meeting overwhelmingly did not want the Board to make immediate cuts and supported the Chief of PD. Selectman May indicated he was influenced by the public in the room and voted YES to the motion to make cuts only in October if an override on the issue fails. Vote was 3 to 2. To be clear: The failure of an override would wipe out vital Public Safety positions and would be devastating to the Town of Templeton.

Templeton Gets a Short-Term Stay on Disaster Pending Outcome of Override Vote

The Templeton Select Board on August 17, 2027 voted 3-2 to avoid immediate cuts after an impassioned speech by the Police Chief who warned that if officers are laid off now it would be hard to undue the damage. So with cuts off the table for now, the Select Board motion to proceed with an override occurred almost 2 hours into the meeting. Here’s just that 10 minute segment. Listen on any device. Members of the Templeton Select Board met to discuss and ultimately approve a $1.38 million tax override motion to address significant budgetary deficits. During the debate, some officials expressed concerns that the requested amount is a temporary fix that fails to cover long-term school funding demands, potentially leading to another fiscal crisis next year. Some members suggested that a larger override could have acted as a financial reserve to prevent repeated tax hikes, though others worried about the burden on taxpayers. The board also reviewed a grim list of service cuts that would take effect if the override fails, including the loss of police officers, firefighters, and highway department staff. Despite some reservations that the funding might be insufficient, the board voted unanimously to move the measure forward to prevent the collapse of essential municipal services.

Gardner City Councilor Elizabeth Kazinskas to start administrative role in Phillipston

Beginning Monday August 24, 2026, Elizabeth Kazinskas will begin her job as Administrative Assistant to the Phillipston Select Board. For the past 6 years, Kazinskas has been working for State Representative Kimberly Ferguson, most recently as District Director. Ferguson had announced she was not seeking reelection this time around, so the Councilor has been looking for work.

It can be assumed that the Select Board of Hubbardston regrets its decision to pass on Kazinskas because the person offered the job ended up seeking employment elsewhere. Why Hubbardston did not choose Kazinskas remains a mystery.

Kazinskas has some municipal experience, having served as Acting Mayor of Gardner for 4 months in 2020 during the Covid pandemic and receiving statewide praise for her handling of City matters during the time. The incoming Phillipston Executive has served multiple terms as a Gardner City Councilor and Council President from 2021 to 2024.

A section of the Uptown Rotary is Getting a Redo

After dozens of accidents have occurred, the State of Massachusetts is footing the bill to reconfigure the Uptown Rotary section where traffic intersects with Elm Street and Pearl Street. About 2 years ago, Gardner Magazine Publisher Werner Poegel (not an engineer) sent an email to the Mayor and the DPW Director. Among other things Poegel stated, “there’s something wrong with the geometry at that juncture.” Because construction was still underway at the time, they weren’t overly concerned. However, the weird geometry was left that way and caused problems. The public has been complaining since the very first day and area motorists are hoping this redo will fix the travel headache.

On-Site Retail Sales Approved for Existing Marijuana Cultivation and Delivery Facility

At its meeting of August 11, 2026, the Gardner Planning Board reviewed and approved a request to amend a special permit for the HeadyCo facility at 4 Lachance Street in Gardner, authorizing the addition of on-site retail services to an existing operation previously planned for cultivation, manufacturing, and delivery. The business model is described as a “connoisseur” or “farm-to-table” experience, allowing customers direct access to the producer. The Board’s approval was granted unanimously, contingent upon 14 specific conditions designed to ensure neighborhood compatibility, site security, and regulatory compliance. The plan is to repurpose the interior area to create a retail area of about 275 square feet and add signage to let people know about it. There will be a minimum of 3 employees present at all times with hours of Sunday through Thursday from 9am to 9pm and Friday-Saturday 9am to 10pm. No outdoor sales, displays, or consumption of marijuana is permitted. The Board clarified that there are four retail marijuana licenses authorized in the City with three currently in use. This project does not utilize a new license, as it incorporates on-site retail into an existing permit.

The Templeton 3 Hour Select Board meeting of August 10, 2026 was a preview of decisions which need to be made at the next meeting of August 17, 2026. Central to the discussion: the critical $1.1 million municipal budget deficit. This financial crisis follows the passage of the regional school budget and the failure of previous tax overrides in May. “Water & Sewer Billing Update

The Water Department would like to address concerns that have recently been raised regarding water and sewer utility bills.

Over the past several weeks, our office has identified billing calculation errors affecting some customer accounts. We understand that receiving an unexpected or inaccurate bill can be frustrating, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of residents who have contacted us while we work to resolve these issues.

After reviewing our billing processes, it became clear that certain billing calculations and account adjustments were not consistently completed in accordance with City procedures. As a result, some accounts may have been billed incorrectly. We are addressing these issues as they are brought to our attention and are working to correct affected accounts and issue revised invoices when necessary.

The first week of August 2026 provided a definitive case study in meteorological volatility, characterized by a violent “meteorological pivot” that tested the limits of regional infrastructure. City Council Briefing on Vision Zero Expected in September – Public Engagement Event Planned for October

It is probably the only project where having NOTHING for a goal is actually a good thing. And the goal of Vision Zero is exactly that – to reduce traffic fatalities in Gardner to ZERO. The City of Gardner is currently in the third quarter of its Safety Action Plan development, moving from data analysis toward the identification and implementation of safety countermeasures. Central to this initiative is the adoption of a “Vision Zero” policy, which proposes a target of zero fatal and serious injury crashes within the city by 2050, with an interim goal of a 50% reduction by 2035.

With regard to the water bills: If you spot a $4 discrepancy or a rate that looks “off” on your statement, do not wait. Call the billing office immediately. While the City of Gardner expects it will take about three more billing cycles to fully audit the system, they are correcting individual errors and issuing credits – interest free – upon request.

Technology Transition: The city is also transitioning from manual water meter readings to “drive-by” technology which will get around the problem of scaling massive, frozen snowbanks and being chased by neighborhood dogs.

DPW Director Dane Arnold reported significant delays and errors in the water billing office, which has fallen two to three billing cycles behind. Some of the issues reported: Software Glitches – a January upgrade to the “Munis” software system caused import errors for meter reads, leading to a backlog. Staffing Issues: DPW is currently managing significant turnover, including a vacancy for the leader biller position. Interviews are ongoing, but new hires will require extensive training. Billing Inaccuracies: Due to the system errors, some residents were billed at outdated rates or received “stimated” bills incorrectly marked as “actual” reads. Resolution Plan: The City estimates it will take approximately three months to identify and correct all individual billing errors. In the Meantime: Overcharged customers will receive credits, and no interest will be charged on accounts affected by these errors. Abatements on hold: Abatements for leaks or high usage are currently frozen (held without interest) until the billing office is restaffed and the system is stablized.

The Gardner Golf Commission met on August 3, 2026 and members discussed several operational updates and future plans. Key topics included a feasibility study involving architectural reviews and the introduction of a FALL Membership Special to boost revenue. (begins August 31st) . However, financial performance for the first three weeks of July was strong, with a reported revenue of $148,000 and a net profit of $55,000.

Members expressed concern about the unauthorized use of the driving range by independent instructors with a discussion focused on potential liability and professional optics.

Templeton – Phillipston MA School Budget Approval

The Narragansett Regional School District Budget was approved by a margin of just 10 votes (277-267) at a special meeting on August 3, 2026. Now, Templeton leaders are faced with additional cuts to the rest of the municipal budget which will impact some essential services.

The Templeton Select Board recently wrote: “additional $1,100,484 in cuts that would be needed would affect Police, Fire, the Senior Center, the Library, DPW, Building & Grounds, Development Services, and Town Hall. More cuts mean fewer resources to keep Templeton safe, clean, and thriving.” Now that the School Budget has passed, the Select Board will need to discuss next steps.

The Gardner City Council meeting on August 3, 2026, focused heavily on administrative corrections, financial transparency reforms, and the reallocation of funds for critical infrastructure safety. Flash Flooding Causes Problems in North Central MA

Rain on the morning of August 3, 2026 has caused flash flooding in the Fitchburg – Leominster – Lunenburg area.

Notable areas included some sections of Route 2, the John Fitch Highway in Fitchburg, and Route 13 in Lunenburg.

Please exercise caution when traveling to these areas.

Mass Transportation posted at about 9am: “Merriam Avenue is closed at the Route 2 interchange due to flooding. Route 2 has also been reduced to one lane in each direction. Closures are expected to remain in place for the next hour.”

DeMeo, Brunelle, and Blake Mislead the Public Again

A Facebook post on that Rogue Facebook Group falsely claimed that the City of Gardner had confiscated through legal action the WGAW property for non-payment of taxes (property records card documents Steve Wendell owns the property) . Gardner Magazine has confirmed that as of August 3, 2026, not only is Steve Wendell not behind on any back property taxes owed the City of Gardner, but also Wendell is paid up until 2027.

Shame on DeMeo and Brunelle who consistently alter facts on many issues to suit their false narratives. (their lies). In recent days one of their associates in crime, Kimberly Blake, has drafted a long rant regarding false nonsense about Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson, none of which is true.

Brunelle constantly posts about the Waterford Community Center when public records show that the City of Gardner has followed all appropriate State and Federal EPA requirements relating to the facility, including going above and beyond with the Mayor’s request to completely abate all asbestos in the 2 story wing of the building.

You can’t make this up folks, but yet that Rogue Facebook Group does. When will Facebook finally shut that group down. Gardner Magazine has learned that the group has been reported to Facebook itself for its false claims and harassment of individuals.

Todd Angilly to open Gardner National Night Out with National Anthem

Todd Angilly is also known as the National Anthem Singer for the Boston Bruins and Angilly will open the Gardner Gardner National Night Out, Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 5:30 pm.

While the Greater Gardner National Night Out will literally open on a big note, it just gets better from there. The event’s primary objective is to connect residents with local and regional resources through a festive, cost-free environment. Nearly all activities, food, and services are provided FREE of charge to ensure accessibility for all community members.

The event is being held Thursday in Gardner so that regional organizations would be able to attend. Location is at Gardner High School on Catherine Street in Gardner right off of Pearl Street.

The FREE raffle concept: Meaningful dialogue between attendees and vendors is accomplished through a raffle system. Attendees receive a card with 25 free raffle tickets and to enter a raffle, participants simply listen to the spiel about the services offered. Vendors are not charged fee, their cost is a raffle prize which is awarded at the end of the evening: 7:45pm.

Greenwood Pool to Re-Open after Filtration System Repairs

From the City of Gardner: ““NOTICE Sunday August 2^nd, 2026 Pool Re-Opening Work on our filtration system concluded, so you can expect Greenwood Memorial Pool to re-open on Sunday after we have finished preparing the pool for swimmers. We want to thank you for your patience throughout the process and look forward to seeing you again starting on Sunday!”

The Greenwood Pool has been closed for the past week while these repairs have been made.
