- Serious Petersham Accident
Motorcyclist Sustains Serious Injuries in Collision with Bear
A 71-year old male Orange MA resident sustained serious injuries in a collision with a 160 pound bear while traveling on Route 122 in Petersham. The man was flown via Life Flight to U-Mass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The bear was deceased at the scene.
Petersham Fire Department posted on September 13th: “Emergency crews responded today to a serious motorcycle vs. bear accident on New Salem Road near the New Salem town line (Route 122).The motorcyclist sustained injuries requiring air medical transport by UMass Memorial LifeFlight. Athol Fire Department transported the patient to the landing zone, where Life Flight-2 took over patient care and transported the patient by air to the UMASS trauma center. Multiagency support provided by: Athol Fire Department – Petersham Police Department – New Salem Police Department – Massachusetts State Police – Massachusetts Environmental Police – New Braintree Dispatch – UMass Memorial Life Flight – Thank you to everyone who worked together to provide care and transport. – Photo credit to: Conor Griffin & Teddy Langer.”

Petersham PD Mourns K-9 Lucy and Honors Her Service
From the Petersham MA Police Department: “The member’s of the Petersham Police Department extend our deepest condolences to Ret. Corporal Bob Legare as his partner K-9 Lucy was laid to rest earlier today. K-9 Lucy served with Cpl. Legare for many years responding to missions and public education events across Massachusetts, the pair worked as members of the Northeast Houndsmen. On a moments notice K-9 Lucy was ready to respond in a wide variety of call-outs, including but not limited to missing person searches & fugitive tracks just to name a few. K-9 Lucy, we thank you for your service:”
For over a decade, K-9 Lucy helped find people who were missing and aiding in apprehending fugitives by tracking them.
About the Northeast Houndsmen: The Northeast Houndsmen is a North Quabbin-based non-profit organization in Massachusetts that trains police bloodhounds and other K-9 units for law enforcement, search, and recovery operations. Specializes in training man-trailing bloodhounds and patrol dogs (like German Shepherds) for local and regional police departments.Location: Based out of Athol and Phillipston, Massachusetts.Activities: Conducts intense annual training and certification seminars—including unconventional tracking practice like helicopter acclimation, fire/smoke navigation, and water tracking.
