Resolutions โ Commentary 12-13-25 This is Werner Poegel of Gardner Magazine dot com. Is it time to make some resolutions and when did the tradition of resolutions start? Well I would argue that the custom started with our very first document as a nation, the Declaration of Independence. It started with the Lee resolution introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proposing independence for the American colonies.
Hereโs what happened 250 Years ago: The colonists elected delegates to attend a Continental Congress that eventually became the governing body of the union during the Revolution. Its second meeting convened in Philadelphia in 1775.
On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution โthat these united colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states,โ acting under the instruction of the Virginia Convention. The Lee Resolution contained three parts: a declaration of independence, a call to form foreign alliances, and โa plan for confederation.โ
On June 11, 1776, the Congress appointed three concurrent committees in response to the Lee Resolution: one to draft a declaration of independence, a second to draw up a plan โfor forming foreign alliances,โ and a third to โprepare and digest the form of a confederation.โ
Because many members of the Congress believed the actions Lee proposed to be premature or wanted instructions from their colonies before voting, approval was deferred until July 2. On that date, Congress adopted the first part (the declaration). The words of the Lee Resolution are echoed in the Declaration of Independence.
The Lee Resolution: Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.
That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.
That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation
New York cast no vote until the newly elected New York Convention upheld the Declaration of Independence on July 9, 1776. The plan for making treaties was not approved until September of 1776; the plan of confederation was delayed until November of 1777.
From one resolution was eventually born a nation. And the purpose of a resolution is to decide what to do and then do it.
So, how about some resolutions that are a little bit easier than that one.
You can make a resolution to do something you havenโt done before: A very common one is a resolution to lose weight or lose so many pounds. I think that one is made a lot, and from the looks of many of us, it doesnโt always work out so well. America overall is overweight, so thatโs a tough one.
So Iโll throw you a bone. An easy resolution which will make members of your family very happy. Resolve to put your phone away at dinner or while engaging in in-person conversation. You can still use your phone, just not when it drives everyone bonkers.
Maybe you could resolve to volunteer with a local non-profit. Serve on a local board or commission.
Maybe adopt a pet from a local shelter. Or maybe, a resolution to do some kindness you think of.
If youโre looking for self-improvement resolutions, hereโs a few. Eat healthier, drink more water, exercise more, get more sleep, leave work problems at work and be present when you get home. You could spend more time with family and friends.
You could resolve to save more and get out of debt.
You could learn a new skill, get organized, read more, travel more, or give up a bad habit like smoking, vaping, or anything in that category of bad habit..
Or maybe resolve to watch tv moreโฆ well, weโll leave that one alone, you probably already watch enough tv.
Or maybe you have some home improvement resolutions like getting to that list of projects youโve always wanted to do. Oh, youโve got that list hidden somewhere do you and youโre not so eager to find it. I can identify with that one.
If you want to make a change in your life, whether itโs a major one or a minor one, thereโs no shortage of possible resolutions. Just remember this: If you donโt try, you have no chance of reaching your goal. So make a resolution, give it a shot, and you just might be very happy you did it.

Gardner Magazine Calls Out Leapfrog for Shocking Bad Practice โ We give Leapfrog a Big Fat F
Imagine this: You choose not to participate in a survey so the survey provider decides to just give you a bad grade. Not because they have any evidence. Not because they have any facts. Simply because they want to stick it to you. Doesnโt sound like that could be possible, does it? Well, it apparently happened. One local hospital system, Heywood was a victim of Leapfrog, getting Dโs when they werenโt really even graded. They just didnโt choose to participate because they didnโt want to waste valuable staff time or resources on the survey provider. Hereโs proof right on Leapfrogโs website, CLICK HERE
We say shame on Leapfrog, and congratulations to Heywood Healthcare which includes Athol Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and Heywood Medical Group for providing excellent patient centered care in the region for over one hundred years. In our opinion, we hope that Heywood and the other hospitals similarly targeted take appropriate legal action for what in our opinion was an egregious attempt to besmirch the reputation of a fine organization which is spending its time on quality, patient-centered care rather than on obviously misleading surveys.In our opinion, Leapfrog โstuck it to Heywoodโ simply because Heywood declined to respond to a survey. And thatโs just not OK.

The City of Gardner is moving forward due to some very smart decisions and actions over the last 5 years. Turning $50,000 in to $50 million is a story to be told for the ages.

So how exactly did Gardner Mayor Nicholson turn a $50,000 City investment into a $50 million return for Gardner?
It all started with a realization by the Mayor that because of the daily workload in the Economic Development and Planning Department, it was possible that some grant money was being left on the table. If somehow the City could get additional help in seeking grants by having a 3rd party navigate the grant maze, perhaps the City of Gardner could gain more in grants than the expense of hiring a 3rd party.
Gardner Mayor Nicholson went before the City Council and got approval after considerable discussion. Mayor Michael Nicholson knew it was likely that even one grant approval would bring in more money than the funds expended. Mayor Nicholson was both right and wrong โ right in the decision to pursue getting a 3rd party grant writer to help, but wrong in forecasting the extent of the endeavorโs success.
So far, a $50,000 investment by the City has returned more than $50 million. Itโs a testament to the keen mind of Mayor Michael Nicholson and a big highlight of his 5 years of moving Gardner forward. And itโs documentation that when a City Council is willing to think outside of the box the rewards can be awesome. We hope the next 5 years are just as successful. Sometimes there are unexpected mazes involved in running a City, but when you have educated, experienced, and intelligent people involved, almost anything is possible.

Blake Voting Scam Revealed โ Itโs Still 1 Vote Per Person โ No strategy provides more than one vote
Gardner Magazine reached out to renowned election attorney Gerry McDonough to confirm a very simple concept, that itโs 1 person, 1 vote and that the nonsense being stated by Kimberly Blake and some of the write-in candidates is just that, nonsense. In the Tuesday election, you can only put in 1 sticker per sticker candidate. If you put in more than 1 for the same office, the ballot will get thrown out. Also, if you vote for less than 6 at large candidates, you still only get 1 vote per candidate. Voting for 3 doesnโt give you 2 votes for each of those people.
Gerry McDonough has been practicing law for over 25 years in a variety of settings. A 1991 graduate of Suffolk University Law School, he graduated at the top of his class, summa cum laude, with several awards, including the Alexander Cella award in Administrative Law. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the Suffolk University Law Review. Following law school, Gerry clerked for the Honorable Joseph Nolan on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Blake Voting Scam What McDonough made very clear: What Gerry McDonough stated was very clear: โSo you can only put one sticker down. You canโt put two stickers. I mean, everybody would be doing that then. You know, any candidate on the ballot would be doing that and putting extra stickers in the box for their position. No, itโs not true. Well โ This is not going to happen. You can put different stickers. You can vote for somebody in Ward 1 and put a sticker โ the same sticker in Ward 2 and Ward 3 or at large or whatever, so long as youโre voting for different positions. You can vote for the same person, but it has to be for different positions. โฆ Yeah, so just look at the ballot. Get a sample ballot, look at the ballot. It says vote for one. So if you vote for more than one, you get zero. Itโs considered an overvote. And it wonโt count at all. Itโll be zero. So theyโre undermining themselves by saying put three stickers down, because if you put three stickers down, itโd be an overvote, and it wouldnโt count at all.โ

My opponent has made claims, rumors, and accusations about me, my family, co-workers, volunteers, and supporters that are untrue, unwarranted, and quite frankly โ blatant misinformation. From posts on social media, to taunts yelled across the street at myself and my supporters- the lies have gotten out of hand. Gardner Election is Tuesday November 4th. Polls open at 7am and are open until 8pm.
Mayor: Choose Incumbent Mayor Michael Nicholson or Challenger Kimberly Blake
Ward Councilors: Choose a Councilor to represent your individual Ward
Councilors at Large: Choose up to 6 Councilors at Large. Note: Each vote only counts once. For example, if you decide to vote for only 3 Councilors at Large, each of them receives only one vote from you. Your other 3 votes donโt count for anything and you are letting others choose the remaining Councilors at Large. Further: Some have suggested that each voter has a total of 6 votes which can be distributed as you choose and that is not true. No, if you vote for only 3, each of the 3 doesnโt get 2 votes from you.
School Committee: 3 seats are up for election. While the terms are 4 years, only half of the 6 seats come up every 2 years.

Here are some examples: In a 2023 city council race in Rainier, Washington, candidate Ryan Roth won his seat by a single voteโhis own. His opponent did not cast a ballot. Let me say this again. Ryan Roth showed up to cast a ballot, but the person running against him did not show up to vote. So Roth won by one vote. โ- Troy, New York City Council (2017): A city council election in Troy was decided by just one vote. โ- Alabama City Council (1992): One vote determined the final member of the Selma, Alabama city council.
Here are some Historical examples.
Rutherford B. Hayesโs presidency (1876): Rutherford B. Hayes was elected president by one electoral vote. The vote of the Indiana representative in the Electoral College was also decided by a single vote.
Andrew Johnsonโs impeachment (1868): President Andrew Johnson was impeached but was saved from being removed from office by one vote in the Senate. Just one vote saved Johnson and he remained President.
Thomas Jeffersonโs presidency (1800): After a tie in the Electoral College, Thomas Jefferson was elected president by one vote in the House of Representatives.
19th Amendment ratification (1920): One vote in the Tennessee legislature was the deciding factor in ratifying the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Somewhat ironic, donโt you think. The 19th amendment was about giving women the right to vote. And it got ratified by just one vote.

The Winchendon History and Cultural Center put on an event called: โSerial: A โKillerโ Immersive Haunted House Experience Like No Otherโ It was held on October 23, 24, and 25, 2025. In my opinion, the concept was very sick and disgusting. I am calling for the entire Board to resign.

Gardner MA Open checkbook offers an incredible level of detail and there was indeed a check written by the City of Gardner for just over 2 dollars on July 24, 2014. It was check number 183329 and Gardner Magazine picked it at random to prove a point. Despite the incredible level of inaccurate and false nonsense continually peddled by a few wackos, the City of Gardner is actually completely transparent as to where it spends money and what it takes in. In fact, everyone can access the open checkbook and find out what was paid out last week or over a decade ago. Look for yourself anytime at this link, CLICK HERE.

Editorial: Blake on an Island of Few โ Up to Old Tricks?
This week Kimberly Blake announced she was running for Mayor instead of Gardner City Council. Weeks before, Blake arranged this Publisherโs re-admittance into the DeMeo Facebook Group. Iโve been posting a few things including a very positive post about the 4 years of perfect audits achieved by the Nicholson Financial Team. False Attacks began again, against me, against the Mayor, even against the State Representative, some using anonymous accounts. Of course I corrected the record and asked Blake via private Facebook message to honor her promise of not allowing false or personal attacks in that group. โ Her response: โComments like those should be made using the persons real name, not anonymous.โ In other words, she would not honor her word, but did take down a few anonymous attacks. I spent many minutes on Saturday, May 3rd responding to the most salacious and ridiculous posts with facts, not attacks against anyone. This upset the liars and false mud slingers who reported me to Paul DeMeo.
The Group did a Poll and almost Nobody Cared
A self-serving poll was attempted in that group stating โWith nearly 17k members in this group, I have to ask, who has your vote for mayor? Only 232 group members responded (almost all for Blake) but only 1.4% of the group even cared to respond in 18 hours. That means 98.6% of the group didnโt care during that time. In light of the goings on of last time, it is very clear, Blakeโs candidacy is on an island of the very few. In my opinion, given Blakeโs past actions, demeanor, and varied concerns on the part of many, it would be a sad day if that person was ever elected Mayor of Gardner. Why would you not rehire Michael Nicholson who by all objective data has done an excellent job since he took office in July 2020? UPDATE: 5-4-25 9:30PM โ Interest rose slightly to 1.5% with 36 more participants. Update 5-6-25 3:30pm Interest rose to 1.7%
In my opinion, DeMeo Threw a Fit
In my opinion, Paul DeMeo was just not having it. People would be called out on false attacks and/or false statements. That just couldnโt be. He was losing the narrative. So, once again this Publisher was removed from that Facebook Group. For a brief time, he actually posted a poll โyour vote will decide Werner Poegelโs fate.โ When I had some fun and added an option for me to become an admin and some members voted for that, well that was it for the poll. The poll itself disappeared and so did me from the group. Some have commented to me that I was only made a member again so that Blake could use me for the vast platform Gardner Magazine has โ my opinion agrees with that sentiment. What they didnโt count on is Gardner Magazine is about facts and you will always get the truth reported here. We only hope that other local media will not be manipulated to spread what in my opinion is often nonsense.
Update 5/5/25: DeMeo Retaliated for this article by falsely claiming this Publisher had made verbal attacks against โAnimal Control Officersโ who we hold in high regard and have often recognized. DeMeo twisted a comment made to Kimberly Blake, โYou donโt deserve to be dogcatcher, let alone Mayorโ. As it takes great character to handle the job of dogcatcher properly, the insult is to the candidate, not the dogcatcher. In my opinion, Kimberly Blakeโs unwillingness to immediately remove false, sick, or perverted comments on that DeMeo-Blake Group (she stated simply that they shouldnโt be posted anonymously) renders her unsuited for the strength of character needed for the position she is seeking. BLAKE SUPPORT DIPS: After a 3 day poll on the Mayorโs Race, Blake was able to obtain interest in the poll of only 1.7% of group members. In my opinion, this is simply fallout from what went on when Blake ran for Mayor in 2023 and the public does not soon forget.

Winchendon Override Song An Editorial Letter to the People of Winchendon on the Proposed $2.9 million Override
With so many barbs being thrown about with regard to a Prop 2 ยฝ override, I thought Iโd approach the issue with my own brand of common sense and also keep it simple without any political mumbo jumbo. My article contains an actual song I wrote on what Iโm calling the โCommon Sense Overrideโ Bottom Line: Yes, Winchendon has had some problems over the years and has some big fiscal challenges Bottom Line: Yes, having to do an override sucks. But letโs look at reality. Things are so much more expensive than they were a few years back and the normal tax levy just wonโt cover the bills. Even Duxbury which hasnโt had an override in almost 4 decades is seeking one this year. (Vote failed last month -2,174 no votes and 1,981 yes votes) Winchendon is not alone. But it is the only town in the United States named Winchendon. It is a truly special community. And it needs the support of its community of people to continue its progress. The $2.9 million override if approved would result in continuing a positive trajectory. It would be a win for the town. It would be a win for you.
The average single family Winchendon home is valued at just under $341 grand with a current tax bill of $4,006. Without the override, the bill goes up to $4,187 an increase of $181 or 15 bucks a month. With the $2.9 million override, the bill goes up to $4948, an additional increase of $761 or just under $64 bucks a month. You know what I would do in my household? Iโd vote for the override because the value of the services maintained is worth it. After all, itโs part of why you live in such a wonderful town. If my budget was tight, Iโd say, Hmm, Iโd get rid of some of my expensive cable tv services instead, you know you could easily save about 80 bucks a month getting the same channels through a streaming service. And by the way, the FREE library can get you a lot of media for zilch, nothing. And do you really want to be the person who doesnโt support the senior citizens in Winchendon. Do you really want to cut badly needed supplies for Parks, Recreation, Fire, and public works. Do you really want to cut athletics, staffing, and programs at the schools? What is the monthly value of all that? Itโs worth the 2 bucks a day extra youโd be spending. Keep what is needed to maintain a great town. Set up Winchendon for a better fiscal future. I know for some the thought is this: Youโre tired of everyone picking your pocket. And youโre right. It pisses me off too. Every time we turn around, something goes up. Things you donโt have control over. So the tendency with an override that you have control over would be to start with a NO. However, funding your town is about as close to home as it gets and the consequences are very impactful. Please consider spending an average of an extra $64 per month to give Winchendon, your town, the full support it deserves. And then, after you say YES, Iโd like you to do this. Stay involved locally. Make sure todayโs leaders are followed tomorrow by fiscally responsible leaders. Let them know you are willing to invest in Winchendon. Youโre willing to invest in Winchendonโs Future. Youโre willing to invest in your kids future. You want people to be attracted to Winchendon so in case you ever want to sell your house, you can get what itโs worth, not tens of thousands less because you decided not to invest in your town. And remember this: Youโre the boss. You employ the townโs leaders. You employ the administrators in the schools. And you have every right to demand competence and excellence. not one penny of your tax money should be wasted.
Vote for the $2.9 million override because itโs in your best long-term interest. But before you vote YES at town meeting, let the town leaders know that itโs your money and you will expect and demand that it be spent wisely, this year and years down the road.

EDITORIAL โ Full, Half Empty, a few riders, or empty โ which is it?
Gardner City Councilor Karen Hardern got approval to have an informal meeting with the City Council and MART to discuss safety concerns and the amount of ridership. MART has been FREE and Hardern suggests the model may not be working.
FREE ridership on MART may not make any sense if ridership doesnโt increase by 20 fold in some cases as Councilor Hardern complains that some routes have no riders or 2 riders.ย ย With 2 riders, youโd need a 50% increase in riders to have just 1 more person.ย So whatโs relevant are the real numbers. My idea would be that ridership would not be FREE, but could be rebated to an individual if a desired threshold is met, thus encouraging public transportation and actually making a difference in the environment.ย It appears the current model might actually be having a negative effect if Hardernโs concerns have validity.ย Without any real numbers but just percentages, we have no real data to really know whatโs going on.ย ย Are the buses successfully full, half empty, or often empty?ย ย The answer would be helpful.

Editorial: Threshold of 3 Violated Daily in Greater Gardner MA
Itโs a simple concept violated daily by local officials, business owners, non-profit operators, and individuals โ failure to cross the threshold of 3. The average person needs to be exposed to something about 3 times in order for it to sink in. That means relying on Facebook posts alone has caused the failure of information to get across and contributed to the demise of local businesses.
Every business, organization, or government entity should have a website and post ANY material there (on the home page) of whatever is important enough to post on Social Media. Only about 3 percent of the membership of any one Facebook Group visit on any given day โ no more than a few hundred people. Gardner Magazine has thousands of daily visits. WGAW has thousands of daily listeners. Thousands watch TV. Thousands get their mail. Itโs important for businesses to do REAL advertising, reaching people often, crossing the threshold of 3, and building the business. Only 25% of new businesses make it to the 15 year mark. But those with an organized advertising plan rarely fail.
Let me give you some local examples of those who didnโt really advertise and failed in Downtown: Crown Chicken (not once, but twice), the Nutrition Shake Shop (not once but twice), a downtown fashion store which lasted about 2 months, a bridal shop, a thrift shop, and the grocery store on the corner of the Garbose Building. New business coming in to Gardner is wonderful. Keeping a business afloat requires avoiding the violation of the Threshold of 3. Real success requires some sort of planned, real promotion which yes, costs some money, but not as much as you think. And certainly not as much as the heartache of having to close your doors.

Editorial: Being Critical Part of Media Role
Gardner Magazine is often criticized for being overly positive about the Chair City. We agree. This publication has a โcup is half fullโ approach. Itโs often easy to be positive as current Mayor Nicholson has been instrumental in turning things around. But in the rush to complete badly needed tasks on the to-do list, certain items get overlooked.
99% of City employees are great and do their jobs very well. But when they donโt, we believe accountability is key. Even if someone just got appointed and the City would owe them 2 years pay, in my opinion it is shortsighted to keep them on the payroll. Cut them loose no matter what it costs because the โgoodโ employees donโt like it when a bad performer is allowed to remain. And it can be argued that the damage they may cause more than offsets the immediate costs of letting them go. The same goes for Boards and Commissions, some of which are admittedly hard to staff. Even so, if a Board Chair mistreats a member of the public they should be gone. In my opinion, such a situation happened recently. We expressed our strongest concerns very privately but heard nothing back. Our public editorial comments were a bit watered down, our outrage tempered with a bit of restraint.
Years ago when local newspapers still did editorials and letters to the editor were published officials had to respond. When I used to fill in for Ken Ash on WGAWโs Party Line as a 20 year old, if a businessman was mistreated at a meeting, there would have been many calls and the official would either apologize, resign, or be terminated. City Councilors openly and publicly criticized each otherโs positions and it was very healthy for democracy. Today, Social Media fills some of the void, but unfortunately many negative comments are inaccurate or simply false so people tend to take things with a grain of salt and call it โunwanted drama.โ
Gardner Magazine will continue to be positive most all of the time because positivity is better than negativity and 99% of the time it is warranted. But, we will also hold public officials to account for their actions and sometimes we will even be wrong in the assessment, but we pledge to bring you accurate information in the form of AUDIO of meetings and full PRESS RELEASES so you can make up your own mind. Facts are facts, but almost everyone has a different opinion about a given situation.

Editorial Christmas Message โ Gardner is a City of Grace
And let me say one more thing especially to those rare individuals who criticize the Mayor and the City Council. Have you seen the Caroling with the Mayor 2024 video? Mayor Michael Nicholson opens with a beautiful Christmas song and ends with a very moving Spanish song as a dedication to his late aunt.
Your mayor is a man of faith and approaches his daily job with the same passion for doing good. Mike Nicholson has been a go getter working his tail off. Some have criticized him for not calling out individual employees who may not work to expectations โ what you donโt know is Catholics are taught to show others grace and let others save face. Itโs easy to cast blame โ itโs much harder to show grace, and I admire Mayor Nicholson for his practice of doing so. The Mayor also shows grace and respect to other religions. People who work for the City of Gardner leave with their dignity intact and I think it is a quality to celebrate especially at Christmas.
And with respect to the City Council
Ever notice earlier this year when there were disruptions? City Council President Kazinskas was polite, said a few words, but took a recess to say stronger words off camera. Elizabeth Kazinskas is respectful to all who come to the City Council Chamber and this is also something to celebrate at Christmas. The City of Gardner was founded as a community of faith so many years ago. I find it very nice to know that the officials in Gardner are people of faith who do the work of the City in the context of kindness. It is not an unfair bias to recognize the good in people when it genuinely exists, as it does in Gardner. From the 11 hard working members of the Gardner City Council, to those who work for the City and the Schools, a business community which for the most part gets very good Google reviews, and the unsung heroes of the non-profits who do so much every single day for those who really need them. How Gardner Turned $1 into $266.67 โ 75,000 Times
It was a simple request at the time and eventually $75,000 was spent on a 3rd party grant writer to supplement in-house efforts. A few were skeptical and then the unthinkable happened. Gardner got back $20 million in grant funds, some 266 times the investment.
Now the City is ready for Round 2, equipped with up to $100,000 to do it again. Last time the pitch was, just one successful grant will more than cover it. This time the pitch was, look at the results.

Nicholson on Grants The City of Gardner has an almost $80 million annual budget. Saving $20 million through grants in an amount which represents about 1/4 of the property tax bill of each Gardner property owner is a significant amount.

Editorial: Election Results Should be no Surprise and Should Teach Lessons
Election Day was this week. Some were surprised by the results. They shouldnโt have been. On the National level, the result reflected that the majority of America was not happy with the current administration in Washington because of various problems including border policy , inflation, crime, and foreign policy. Under normal circumstances if Donald Trump did not have some high negatives because of his sometimes offensive approach, the win could have been larger, more like when Ronald Reagan won 49 states. For example, Trump almost won the state of New Jersey, turning a double digit Biden lead in 2020 into a just a 5 point Harris lead in 2024. Trump did win the National popular vote, mainly because of his strategy of asking for votes everywhere. Iโm hoping heโll take this second chance and do well with it.
On the local level: Voters were faced with the choice of long-time State Representative Jonathan Zlotnik who has a perfect voting attendance record and a long list of achievements including specific help for veterans, but failed to adequately campaign, AND, Bruce Chester, a man who has run 3 times for the job, but has faced rebuke because of his alleged unethical handling of campaign finances and obvious lack of knowledge.
On Jonathan Zlotnik
A classic case of a good candidate not campaigning or taking the time to update Social Media to document his achievements. Had he done that, his vote tally would have been higher. Representative Zlotnik did do interviews with Gardner Magazine and WGAW and chronicled his achievements. A Rogue Gardner Facebook Group published many false items about Zlotnik which continued with simply made up falsities after Zlotnik won.
Zlotnik needs to campaign in his next election and post more items documenting his work. He almost lost because he didnโt do that. And it should be easy as he has a long list of successes and a history of benefiting his district. For example, Zlotnik has worked with the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center and has helped get more housing for veterans. Zlotnik helped get much needed funding for Heywood Hospital and numerous grants for Gardner and area communities. The irony is Zlotnik often works his tail off on behalf of the public rather than wasting time on Social Media. Well, maybe take 5 minutes each day. Just a thought.
On Bruce Chester
A classic case of a deeply flawed candidate who took the time to campaign and used Social Media to a certain extent. Despite running for the office 3 times, Chester could not answer very simple questions about legislation during a WGAW interview. Voters reached out to us both anonymously and by name prior to the election. We investigated and Gardner Magazine prepared a complete report using Bruce Chesterโs own words to reveal very real concerns and we also published State documents revealing the ethics issues.
While Chester claims to teach ethics, according to the state of MA, Chester exudes the exact opposite given his ongoing scrutiny and multiple troubling audits by the Office of Campaign Finance. In my opinion, Bruce Chester was by far the weaker candidate. And now, rather than gracefully accepting his loss by about 4 points, some of his more radical supporters are claiming Gardner election fraud, thus attacking the character of the dozens of good people who make elections work in the Chair City. As recounts very rarely change the vote total dramatically, it simply seems like the actions of a sore loser.

Fake and False News Pervasive on Social Media
Perhaps youโve seen them โ the myriad of false allegations usually made against some very good public officials and sometimes made against this Publisher or other media outlets. Our goal is to not only publish accurate news, but also provide backup documentation such as complete copies of Press Releases and actual AUDIO of meetings, updates, events, and interviews. While we quote a unique circulation of 20,000+, this effort has paid off as the lowest unique circulation in the past year was 25,882 in December 2023. Last month exceeded that by several thousand. AUDIO files have listens in the 1500 to 9000 range per file in a particular month with 100,000 to 150,000 monthly AUDIO file downloads being typically recorded.

How do we know bill had no opposition? 1. From the vote itself 2. Bills get posted daily and a legislator could object in advance of a vote. If 10% of House members, or 16 for example would agree to the objection then a roll call vote would be required. While we have no doubt the rants will continue, we hope they will be ignored for the nonsense theyโve been proven to be.
Editorial: Former Councilor Scott Graves Makes Fool of Himself with Waterford Rants
For weeks now, former City Councilor Scott Graves has posted various rants regarding Massachusetts approval of the former Waterford Street School usage change to general municipal use. That approval means the City of Gardner can enter into leases with prospective tenants. Graves says there should have been a 2/3 vote because of other concerns. Well, the bill passed unanimously on a voice vote by both the House and Senate. 2/3 would be 67%, the bill got 100%. Thatโs more than 2/3, Scott! It had NO opposition so a roll call vote was not required. And prior to the legislation being passed, the bill had undergone careful scrutiny by lawyers at the State House. In my opinion, this is a very clear example of egregiously false information allowed by that rogue Gardner Facebook Group.
The Waterford Community Center is an example of the best of government, coming together for the good of the taxpayers by preserving a building rather letting it fall in disrepair. The good to be done at the Center will benefit Gardner for generations to come.

An exterior with rounded corners utilizing fusion energy for lighting. Operating rooms with state of the art equipment appearing to be straight out of a Star Trek episode. A landing pad near the emergency room for a high-tech flying ambulance. A modern interior with amenities right out of a dream.
This future will be made possible by a committed team who turned their unrelenting focus on patient care into a victory over a short-term, financial obstacle. A future of many hundreds of babies being born in the Maternity Center. A future of many lives saved in a Surgical Pavilion eventually completed after a short-lived wait and a subsequent expansion in 2044. A future with many varied suites for treatment of the ailments of the time. Parking issues solved with a futuristic expansion utilizing as yet unknown technology. Life-saving stasis chambers in the Emergency Room making even the impossible, possible. To the staff of 1907, todayโs team in 2024 and todayโs facilities would appear just as amazing.
A future made possible by the actions of today. Congratulations!

In my opinion, we would be all best served by discussing policy differences rather than disparaging those with whom we disagree. While I took the time to follow this through for about two days, it was consuming. Today the group has less ridiculous posts and I hope that continues.

It was a journey on Social Media to the Ridiculous and I swallowed some of my pride to do it as I wasnโt really undercover using my real name. Thereโs an โUnbiased, Uncensoredโ Group in Gardner which has become infiltrated by those posting mostly anti-Trump or anti-Biden/Harris material. I posted the most ridiculous AI photos including Trump and Harris eating lunch and asking if Harris would be a good choice for his Attorney General if he won. I put down Trump by musing that he might be Harrisโ landscaper if she won. I posted the pic of multiple Trumps speculating that if you saw more than one you had Trump Derangement Syndrome. And the most ridiculous of all, I speculated that a President Harris would have a Chinese Chief of Staff.
Hereโs what I discovered. People on either side of the issue are in general not debating policy. They are demeaning others simply for having a different opinion and that is wrong. With about half of the country supporting one candidate and the other half supporting the other, you canโt say that everything about the other side is awful. Thatโs just not true. But compiling an accurate list of attributes is difficult as networks like Fox are very much pro Trump and anti-Harris with the other extreme being MSNBC which praises Harris and ranks on Trump. In general, Trumpโs policies are not heavily criticized as it is his demeanor and character which is most often negatively assailed. In general, Harrisโs policies are tied to the Biden record which gets mixed reviews, but she gets praised for her lower key approach.

BayState Racing LLC submitted a revised Host Community Agreement in which it substantially increased the financial rewards for Gardner. It answered every citizen and City Council mentioned concern in a considered, respectful manner. Accordingly, out of fairness, the City Council should allow more time for review. Certainly there are emotions involved whether itโs animal care or water, but in reality, those two issues have already been solved in concept and will be objectively addressed in any mandated obligations of the project proponent. Whatโs left is a bias against horse racing and/or gambling shared by many. But is that fair? Think of this: I personally donโt like animal racing, gambling, lottery tickets, alcohol sales, cigarette sales, cannabis establishments, and motorcycles. But, with that said, a consistent application of fairness would give this group due consideration. Last Friday afternoon July 26, 2024 just after 4pm, I embarked on one of the scariest adventures of my life. I went on Route 140. Turning left from Green Street, I managed to skillfully avoid oncoming cars by waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, and waiting. Once on the road, I felt safer, confident in my vigilance. The Horse Farm was a short flash in my view at the right. I turned around at the convenience store, headed back towards Gardner and took some photos, hoping some would come out ok because I couldnโt look through the camera while driving. Back on Green Street, I had a sigh of relief. I was a Route 140 survivor. To all those thinking thereโs traffic on Route 140, what are you talking about?

Social Media Hits new Low in Gardner MA
This week I published an accurate report on the disruptive conduct of Kimberly Blake and others which occurred the night of the Gardner City Council meeting. Earlier in May, I posted an accurate article about Blakeโs illegal food pantry. Fast forward to now: All week there have been false allegations levied against local public officials leading up to Kimberly Blake and Paul DeMeo urging people to go to City Hall to somehow take their City back. Itโs a small group which has been misled, but it is unfortunate for the City. Thereโs nothing to take back. The City is well managed and has had perfect State and Federal Audits for 4 years. Other posts have shown court reports about cases in which the people have been found innocent or acquitted, all in an effort to besmirch the reputations of some very good people. False allegations have been made about abuse, you name it, theyโve put up the nonsense posts. The owner of WGAW has been attacked verbally simply for reporting accurately on what is going on. And the latest, someone posted nonsense about me, the Publisher of Gardner Magazine stating falsely that I was not able to rent out an apartment at my residence due to some bad act. Nothing like that ever occurred. I can rent it out anytime I choose, but currently itโs used for a family member and storage and badly needs updating before I could get market rent for it. I urge anyone who really wants to be involved in change to run for City Council, the 6 top vote getters are elected to Councilors at large. That would be the right way to do it, not making up false things about good people.

UPDATE May 17, 2024 โ Simple Explanation of Issue โ 1. Food Pantry not allowed by State Law in residential area 2. If home was somehow deemed OK for food pantry, permits must first be obtained and inspections must be conducted prior to opening 3. No approvals of any kind were sought or obtained. 4. Person in this instance appears to have known opening was considered unlawful and proceeded anyway. 5. Idea of food pantry to help those in need a wonderful idea. 6. Even those with good ideas must follow the law. 7. Person was not disparaged by Gardner Magazine or WGAW as claimed by Blake. 8. Mayor Nicholson not involved at all as claimed by Blake.. 9. Blake was not even mentioned by Gardner Magazine or WGAW until it was falsely claimed she had been disparaged. (see original article simply referencing a Gardner resident)
EDITORIAL: Kimberly Blake Making False Statements Yet Again โ this time about Gardner Magazine, WGAW, and the Mayor
Kimberly Blake has announced that she is above the law and will open a food pantry at 25 Baker Street in Gardner despite warnings against doing so stating, โIโm aware that the city has plans to try and fine me or have my pantry taken down.โ All of us including those who want to help others have to follow the rules. In Massachusetts, according to Massachusetts State law, a food pantry is not allowed in an area of residential homes. And where it is allowed, various inspections and permits must be obtained prior to opening. One of the reasons for certain activities and businesses not being allowed in residential areas has to do with the obvious problem of parking and the effect on neighbors. We checked, Blake has not sought appropriate permits from the City. However, she has falsely attacked Gardner Magazine and WGAW stating, โGardner Magazine and WGAW can continue to write disparaging articles, Iโm not worried.โ This publication wrote an article and did not mention Blake by name. We spoke with WGAW and they have simply attempted to post information about whatโs not allowed under Massachusetts law.
And then, as usual she is attacking Gardner Mayor Nicholson when she knows he isnโt even involved in the independent actions the Board of Health or the Gardner Building Department may take. Helping people is always a great idea. But, in my opinion, no matter how great the idea sounds, we are all still subject to the law. Imagine if everyone in the City opened up something wherever they would like, ignoring Zoning, ignoring requirements for inspections. It would be chaos and we would all be unsafe. We all have to follow the law. We canโt make up our own laws when we feel like it. The laws are there to protect all residents. And current food pantries are inspected and follow all sanitary laws and requirements and have safeguards in place. Why Blake thinks she is above the law? Who knows. In my opinion, it Makes no sense.

Commentary โ Werner Poegel 5-2-24 In my opinion, if there are local Facebook posts which make false allegations or harmful statements without evidence it may cost admins or members civil liability. However, it doesnโt stop there. If you use social media platforms to track, monitor, or harass individuals causing them significant emotional distress thatโs called cyberstalking, and thatโs a crime. If you intentionally and repeatedly make posts aimed at causing distress or fear to another person including threats, abusive messages, making derogatory comments, or spreading false information with the intention of harm, thatโs criminal harassment. If you conspire with others to do this and have discussions about how to โget this guyโ, thatโs a criminal conspiracy. And if you go after people who object to your posts or comments or perhaps as an admin suspend or remove a group member, that could be criminal witness intimidation. Think before you post.

Facebook Postings Can Lead to Huge Damage Awards โ Even Loss of House
The hypothetical situation: A local Facebook Group makes egregious false statements suggesting falsely that individuals have committed crimes, even repeating similar false statements over a period of months in an attempt to make false claims sound legit. When confronted, it doubles down on the postings which only provides further evidence of actionable malice.
HUGE Awards for damages: The law does not look fondly on actions like this. The offense is Facebook defamation and it can lead to some huge jury awards or large settlements. A post made about a woman got her a settlement of $500,000. Details here: In another case, โventingโ on Facebook led to a $65,000 defamation judgment and liability for 3rd party comments. Details Here: A $75,000 defamation award for false allegations against a female prison officer: Details Here. Many more examples are out there. It is not an amusing situation at all as unfortunately there are some who believe false accusations. However, it is clear, in the end it could cost a Facebook Admin his/her house and those who chime in might have to shell out thousands.
Bottom Line: Unless someone has actually been arrested for a crime and you have an official law enforcement Press Release to prove it, itโs never a good idea to use Facebook to accuse anyone of anything illegal. Gardner Magazine, for example, does not customarily publish the names of those arrested, the names of crime victims, or the names of accident victims. That way, for example, an innocent person is not victimized by an internet article which never goes away and a family does not have to relive a tragedy which keeps coming up with an internet search. We will publish an official Press Release as appropriate. Maintaining the dignity of individuals is important. Unfortunately today, many people are victimized by those getting a thrill out of getting the reactions of others by simply making things up. Fortunately, that thrill eventually costs them โ big time!

Editorial: A Salute to Dogs on National Puppy Day in Greater Gardner MA
Dog owners know the joy of having a dog. โManโs best friendโ โ as dogs are often called, provide companionship, comfort, and service. There are the public examples of Comfort Dog Sully who works with the Gardner Fire Department and K-9 Rocky who assists the Gardner Police Department and caught a burglar on his first day.
The private examples are the millions of dogs who have brought joy to the lives of so many people. But all dogs, like people, start off as small dogs. That is why we want to properly honor National Puppy Day on March 23, 2024. Thereโs is no love like Puppy Love. And the adult dogs they will soon become, one of Godโs greatest gifts to our world.
Often, dogs in the area share much joy in socializing with each other at the Dog Park located at Pulaski Park off either Wright Street or Charbonneau Street in Gardner.

From the City Code, โWhereas history is prologue, and it is important that our children be cognizant of our past, especially the early sacrifices that established the freedom and democracy we enjoy today, annually, on or before the 19th of April, the Mayor shall officially designate Patriots Day as Colonel Thomas Gardner Day in the City of Gardner and shall cause a proclamation to be issued and read in all the schools of Gardner, to honor this patriot who died of wounds received during the Battle of Bunker Hill and for whom our beloved community was named.โ Did you know that Gardner died at Bunker Hill on July 3, 1775 and his funeral services were attended by General George Washington. There are usually rules to cover almost everything and the City of Gardner is no exception. However, we thought it would be interesting to highlight some you might not know or think about.
Interesting Rules in Gardner Giving your dog junk food may subject you to a fine. (unless itโs in addition to good food)
โNo owner of any dog shall fail to provide such dog with a sufficient quantity of wholesome, nutritious food and potable water; adequate shelter from inclement weather; a humane means of exercise; and the necessary veterinary care upon sickness, disease or injury.โ City CodeThe City Engineer is the official authorized to issue numbers for houses and other buildings. Numbers must be at least 3 inches in height. If you donโt display a house number properly, you could be fined $20. City Code. Every March the Mayor appoints someone to measure lumber in the City. City Code The Chief of Police is the โKeeper of the Lockupโ City Code The City Clerk is the Keeper of the City Seal. All deeds given by the City shall be sealed with the City Seal. City Code You canโt wear roller skates or user roller blades in the City of Gardner while visiting a cemetery. Fine is $5. If you get caught 3 or more times, the fine increases to $25 each time. City Code After you bring something to the dump, it becomes the property of the City of Gardner. So donโt throw away your gold bars by mistake. You canโt get them back! City Code You need a permit for a harangue in any street or public way within the City. A harangue is defined as lecturing someone at length in an aggressive and critical manner. Therefore, parents pay attention. If youโre going to lecture your child at length in public, get that permit first. Itโs also needed for a parade or a public address. City Code Only 1 temporary storage unit can be placed on a property at any one time. So no more getting 10 dumpsters at a time folks! However, if the area is zoned industrial, the rule doesnโt apply. City Code If a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces dies, the U.S. Flag shall be flown at half mast on all City Buildings until burial. City Code Like to have a yard sale every week? Canโt do it. Youโre limited to 4 days each year between the hours of 8am and 4pm. Register at least 48 hours prior to the sale with the Building Commissioner. And you canโt sell stuff for a neighbor, only your own stuff is allowed. However, recognized charitable, religious, or benevolent organizations are exempt. City Code You are not allowed to offend someone in public. โNo person shall address any offensive, derisive or annoying word to any person who is lawfully in any street in the City of Gardner, or any other public place, nor deride, offend or annoy him, or prevent him from pursuing his lawful business, occupation or duty.โ The fine is $50. City Code Graffiti Removal must be Supervised by the Police Chief or someone the chief designates. Fines for placing graffiti on property carries steep fines. City Code There is a list of streets on which any vehicle exceeding 2 ยฝ tons in weight canโt go except for local deliveries. The fine for not complying is $25 City Code You canโt be in a City Park, recreational area, cemetery, or land owned by the City of Gardner from sunset until 8am of the following day unless you get permission from the Director of Public Works. So donโt forget your โDane Arnold Letter.โ However, if the land is under the control or jurisdiction of the School Committee, you need written authorization to go there (from the School Committee) between the hours of 8pm and 7am. EDITORIAL: So Many Good Things in the City of Gardner MA
So many good things are happening in the City of Gardner. Did you know that the Waterford Street School Community Center Project is proceeding. Soon the City will have a great Community Center instead of another failing building, AND, it will have an income stream from tenants. Did you know that at this weekโs Appointments Committee meeting that mounds of praise were given to the Council on Aging and Senior Center Director Mike Ellis? And the star of the week, Mayor Michael Nicholson whose proposal for the City Council to approve $60k for a 3rd party grant contractor a while ago may pay back 250 times in the form of a RAISE Grant?
I am overwhelmed by a feeling of great gratitude.
The City of Gardner is run by some very good decent people who have shown in their words, deeds, and successes how much they care about the City. Each Committee of the City Council has proven invaluable and skilled in their oversight. The Mayor has excelled in his leadership. City Employees go above and beyond every single day. Yes, there are So Many GOOD Things happening in the City of Gardner. Sometimes, you just have to say it!
So Many GOOD Things, and I am grateful to write about a City with a great big heart of community spirit. Thank you for this great feeling of joy.

Editorial: Again, More Nonsense Allegations by Pauly Potato
Meeting Minutes: The Gardner City Council Meeting Agenda and Packet for February 5, 2024 contains an an Open Meeting Law violation complaint made by Paul Demeo, known colloquially as โPauly Potato.โ He alleges that the meeting minutes are not provided in a timely manner. He complains about Executive Session minutes not being available.
Weโd like to point out what we call the โInsta Minutesโ. Meetings are posted within 24 hours via YouTube videos. Click on Show Transcript and youโve got Instant Minutes in text of the meeting. Now maybe Pauly Potato wants them in a specific font and maybe even on parchment paper using a specific ink, but come on, in a City which goes above and beyond in its transparency, enough is enough. Every one of these ridiculous nonsense complaints simply costs the taxpayers money. And if something isnโt shared with the public because itโs still a pending legal matter, well, thatโs how youโre supposed to handle things.

Salacious Allegations: On a Gardner Community Group, some very serious falsehoods about a City official were allowed to remain for a short period of time on February 4th until the Admin, Kimberly Blake was contacted by legal counsel. It is disgusting what that group has allowed to be posted over the last year. Those who commented to Blake that the post should be taken down because it was slander were actually banned from the group. You will recall that Gardner Magazine had to call out various falsehoods stated by Blake during the campaign. This behavior is not helpful. Here is an article from September on a certain portrait. Waterford False Allegations: A new thread in the same group was started regarding the Waterford Street School conversion, under the misrepresentation of showing evidence of something improper. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even the posted emails, (if even genuine) when taken in the proper context show communications about how the City should proceed legally. What I donโt understand is this: If the Mayor of a City seeks advice about how to proceed properly on any matter and then does so to conform with the requirements of the law, isnโt that a good thing? And by the way, in a recent interview, Mayor Nicholson revealed that about $700,000 has already been spent. The building is well on its way towards becoming an awesome Community Center. And by the way, the City has an Open Checkbook โ any citizen can see exactly what checks have been written going back an entire decade. From our interview with Mayor Nicholson, CLICK HERE.
Hereโs the irony: At the same time certain elements attempt to disparage its officials, the City of Gardner has established a great reputation for doing things the right way. I understand the disappointment some people feel about not being elected to the office of Mayor. But thatโs no excuse for the continual false attacks and made-up scandals.

January 20th is 1 year away from the next Presidential Inauguration and it will be an interesting year to be sure. But what else is today? It is National No Phones at Home Day, Take a Walk Outdoors Day, National Coffee Break Day, National Cheese Lovers Day, International Day of Acceptance, National Camcorder Day, National Buttercrunch Day, National Disc Jockey Day, National Use Your Gift Card Day, and Penguin Awareness Day. January 20th โ a Day of Many Days With so many days on one day, itโs easy to figure out that somebody or some organization simply thought these days into existence. Next year, theyโll exist again. On January 20, 2025, all the talk will be about who we will be inaugurated as the next President of the United States. Yes, it will be a most interesting year ahead.

Editorial: Law Enforcement Has Been in Continual Search for Pennington
Media Reports on January 5th and January 6th about a โresumed searchโ for Aaron Pennington are at worst somewhat inaccurate and at the very least incomplete. Law enforcement we have spoken to over the past several months have indicated that all avenues have been explored regarding the location of the fugitive suspected in the murder of his wife. The search is local, state, national, and international, and just because some local lead is pursued does not change the fact: they havenโt found him yet and they are looking everywhere using every local, state, and Federal tool at their disposal. He might be found tomorrow or sometime down the line. But rest assured, they are looking for him. And the best way of catching someone is not to reveal all the information which is known. That is the procedure followed in every fugitive hunt. Law enforcement is much more capable, talented, vigilant, and on the task than it is often given credit for and we are very thankful for the job they do every day.

A Christmas Editorial โ Show Love for Those Without a Home
While not of the magnitude as some other places and not as visible, homelessness is a very real local issue. I sent a message to City officials suggesting some Tiny Houses be located in the field at Waterford and that former district offices be used as a common building with bathrooms, kitchen etc. This type of effort has been successful in the very small number of places it has been tried. The Tiny homes generally have a bed, some limited electricity for lighting, and heat or cooling. If my proposal doesnโt make sense, there is one that does and I urge everyone to take the issue seriously until we come up with a viable solution whether funded by grants or by the City. History teaches us that taking on a problem head-on saves money in the long run.
At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is also a time in my opinion to act upon His desire that we show love for our fellow humans. Helping homeless people is one way we can do just that.

Editorial: Chair City โ Gardner MA will always be the Share City
While changed in some respects, Gardner has been called the โChair Cityโ for many years. The number of chairs made in Gardner has declined, but Gardner will always be the Chair City, or in the modern vernacular, the โShare Cityโ. A City to be proud of, where great ideas are born and shared, and resources are shared. Whether itโs the Mayorโs office, a City Council meeting, a School Committee meeting, or any number of gatherings where people talk and โshareโ. There are always chairs in the room and that simple device will always be a needed component of future success.
The Chair City is Gardnerโs legacy and the โShare Cityโ is Gardnerโs Future. Great people moving forward together by sharing common goals and a love for one another. The โShare Cityโ.
Whether you spell it โChairโ or โShareโ, the Chair City of Gardner will always be the โShare Cityโ of proud distinction. To those who say โformerly the Chair Cityโ I say bah humbugโฆ Some things which change sound exactly the same. The Chair City is the Share City.

The Story of Pauly Potato โ How a young Mashed Potato became a Hateful Facebook Admin
In the City of Gardner, there are a number of responsible Facebook Groups. And then thereโs one, and the Admin is Pauly Potato.
No matter what the issue, the group is anti-Mayor, anti-business, anti-City Council, and anti-disagreement. Dare to disagree with the admin, you get banned.
Gardner Magazine has been attacked many times by the groupโs admin. And every time he does it, our readership grows. People know the truth when they see it. After all, we post actual Press Releases and the actual AUDIO of meetings. We hope the recent election for Mayor in Gardner stops some of the nonsense and that Pauly Potato looks out more for the interests of Gardner than for getting a cheap thrill at someone elseโs expense.
Maybe those hot peppers will help him see the light. Remember, there is good in everyone.

Editorial โ Clarity Needed for Future
With the recent debate over Route 140 Zoning on 2 parcels, there is some ambiguity left as to other parcels. We suggest a careful inspection of every parcel as to โOpen Spaceโ protection . For example, we just pulled up this map from the City of Gardner database. The purple line is around the water protection area. Youโll notice some areas not within the line are claimed to be protected. That may very well be why the original proposal was made with the honest belief the land could be used as commercial even though others thought differently. Solution now is update official records accurately after researching data. Review all parcels in City as to intended use and document for benefit of future generations.
The Mayor is right. Councilor Dana Heath and other Councilors are right. Gardner needs more business to help lower taxes for its residents. It needs to make the best use of its existing buildings. The current Mayor has helped to bring in business and get blighted properties back on the tax rolls. And the citizens are right. Land needs to be examined and used for the highest, best use. In some cases, that would be a new commercial business. In other cases, that may be nothing but open space with a view to the sky. We are so fortunate the City of Gardner has room for both visions.

On August 29, 2023, this Publisher did not hesitate to call out the CEO of a local business organization when the information imparted to us was not accurate or fair to a member business. This is the role of a trusted publication like Gardner Magazine. We try to tell it like it is. Unfortunately, that sometimes ruffles some feathers.
Local Land โ Zoning Issue
Iโm writing this at 4:20am on August 30, 2023 . I woke up really troubled by another example of the ethics of transparency. The citizens of Gardner are awaiting information regarding a local land issue. The same business impacted above wants to build in Gardner and is spending money towards that effort. At the same time, citizens opposed are spending money making lawn signs, creating graphics, and taking time away from friends and family on an issue which concerns them.
What if the outcome is known? What if there is information given to City Officials which would immediately settle the issue, one way or the other? We say the ethics of transparency call for immediate disclosure to the public. No waiting until the next City Council meeting even if its only a few days away. No waiting until the next Planning Board meeting even if its only a couple weeks away. The Ethics of Transparency call for immediate disclosure, even if itโs not convenient. Disclosure is not a choice, itโs an obligation. And we urge that obligation be taken seriously without deliberation and without consideration of what timing would be best. True and pure transparency does not a jury need โ it only needs to value the publicโs right to know more than personal convenience.

Editorial โ Why Council Members and the Mayor Canโt Pre-judge a Proposal
Whether itโs a Horse Racing Track, a space museum, or robot factory, any business has a right by law to respond to a request for proposal. Part 1 covers what they propose to do with the property and Part 2 covers how much theyโre willing to pay for it. Massachusetts Law requires the Mayor to consider proposals based on what is in the best interests of the City. If he were to publicly say YES or NO in favor of one idea or another, it would not be fair to all bidders who rightly expect a complete and fair review. With that said, there is a history of Horse Racing proposals being rejected by many communities for a variety of reasons so my suggestion is this: If ultimately the property becomes available as commercial land, make sure other parties propose something which is better for the City and you wonโt have to worry about Horse Racing. Additionally: They should consider what businesses residents think we actually need and whatโs in the best interest of the City โ and, they are already required to do that under the law. So, is there really a problem or is it Social Media nonsense yet again?

Editorial: Everyone Has Their Eyes on Gardner MA and what this man is up toโฆ.
This man was often masked during his first days in office in 2020. People could not see his smile as Gardner conducted one of the most effective vaccine operations in the State. And behind closed doors, this man made a list and used his time efficiently in planning to fix some long standing issues: A Downtown with buildings in need of revitalization. City-owned buildings which were off the tax rolls and falling apart. Projects in need of funding. Roads in need of more money. Citizens in need of services. Students at risk from not being in school. Now unmasked, the positive progress is quantifiable and transparently viewable, even from afar. People know where Gardner is and speak of the Chair City fondly.
Gardner is in the 4th year of a better age. Its success is fueled by common sense, competency, and a willingness to think outside of the box. Gardner is being seen on viewscreens very far away, and what they see is good. Our best wishes to Mayor Michael Nicholson and the Team now and in the years ahead.

It is Gardnerโs โMuch Lovedโ Department because it fixes the roads, plows the streets, mows the lawns does the digging, changes the bulbs, makes the signs, and helps so many. Our Reflections on a Sizzling Summer Saturday in Gardner MA
The weather was far from perfect on Saturday, June 24, 2023, but the people couldnโt have been closer to perfection.
Downtown Businesses showed their Yankee strength and strove on with enclosures for the rain. Downtown restaurants served delicious meals to eager customers.
The Gardner CAC collected jars of peanut butter for their Food Drive.
The Kendall Pond Betterment Association put on a Fireworks show to celebrate Gardnerโs 238th birthday and Centennial as a City.
Gardner Mayor Nicholson was in Downtown playing with a huge snake. Gardner Magazine wonders what is harder? Handling a real snake or navigating the outside agencies he must in order to bring funding in to the City.
Of course, a big highlight of Saturday was the absolutely sizzling artwork presented by hundreds of students from Gardner Elementary School. It graced the Downtown. Theresa Thompson of the Centennial Committee took a photo of the contest winners who each took home a gift basket.
It may not have been a perfect weather day, but when Gardner gets together as a community, itโs about as close to perfect as it can get. And that is always worth celebratingโฆ.

Straight off the 3rd year of a perfect audit, Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson and his team including City Auditor John Richard prepared the budget so well it received no opposition from the Gardner City Council despite the scrutiny of various Committees. A job well done. The Ribbon Cutting at the Gardner Elementary School was a cause for celebration as the City has its first school in 100 years built for kids k-6. Various Park Improvements continue. Renovations are underway in Downtown as flowers are blooming. Upcoming music events were highlighted. And behind the scenes the team in the corner office is working on greater support for Art in the Chair City. Yes, some weeks things just seem to go rightโฆ.

Gardner MA City Clerkโs office Reports No Candidates Yet
As of Friday, May 5, 2023, there are no official candidates for any office in the upcoming Gardner election. Positions coming up for vote are Mayor, City Council, and School Committee. 50 certified signatures are required to get on the ballot. So far, according to the Gardner City Clerkโs office, there are no candidates. If this trend continues, the only thing in the voting booth this Fall might be a cuddly teddy bear.

Common sense is sound, practical judgment concerning everyday matters, or a basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge in a manner that is shared by nearly all people.
EDITORIAL โ Common Sense Solution to Open Meeting Law Concerns and Worries
Gardner Magazine reached out informally to a contact at the Massachusetts Attorney Generalโs office. In my view, for some time, Gardner has opened itself up to potential violations when a few simple changes could avoid ALL problems. Based on an exchange with my contact, hereโs my suggestions.
Councilor Walsh was simply being prudent. Most likely there is NO PROBLEM. However, I make the following common sense suggestions 1. If a group of Councilors want an item on the agenda (5 or less so itโs not a quorum) send the request to the Clerkโs office for inclusion on the agenda and discuss only at the Open Meeting. Donโt even email a meeting agenda, make Councilors get it from the same section on the website as the public. 2. Get rid of the very silly โNew Businessโ and have an โUnanticipated Topicsโ section instead. If someone attempts to speak on something which clearly could have been anticipated, either the Council President or another Councilor could raise a point of order, suggesting that the matter be posted for discussion at the next meeting. Simple common sense changes, NO MORE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS. Sometimes a little common sense is the easiest solution. And common sense doesnโt cost anything.

There is a difference in our journalism here. It is fundamentally positive. But more than that, it is intended to be 100 percent accurate. We publish the actual AUDIO of meetings and the entirety of Press Releases so there is no question as to the intent of the people involved. However, at a Joint Public Hearing of the Gardner Planning Board and City Council, I spoke in support of the Mayorโs Route 140 Zoning Proposal stating, โThe Planning Board did not act with common sense in this matterโ. However, in an article authored by Stephen Landry in the Gardner News the following false statement was made โWerner Poegel of Templeton said the Planning Board, which had previously voted unanimously to not recommend the proposed zoning changes, did not act with the cityโs best interests in mind when coming to its decision.โ I reached out to the reporter stating that in my opinion, โPeople can exercise what in the opinion of others is bad judgment while still in their view acting in the Cityโs best interests.โ
The Reporterโs Response
The reporter emailed back and wrote, โIย didnโt quote you, I paraphrased you. You said Winchendon and Templeton acted too slow, ergo it would be in the cityโs best interest to vote the other way.ย โI wrote back to the reporter, โGive me a break.ย You didnโt use quotes but you said I said something I didnโt say.ย ย You used the words โWerner Poegel of Templeton saidโฆโ You made it seem that I said the Planning Board did not act with the cityโs best interests in mind and I disagree with that statement.ย ย What you donโt understand is people can believe they are acting in the best interest of the City, but be taking the wrong action in the opinion of others. I wrote to the reporter,โSo where do we go from here?ย ย Do you issue a retraction or do I have to call you out on my site?โ The reporter responded in an email,โ Do what you have to doโ Had the position been reversed, we would have immediately corrected our error and donโt understand why he would not do so.
Publisherโs Comment
At Gardner Magazine, we believe in accurately quoting people. We make every effort not to paraphrase, as just in the case of my own situation here, it can result in inaccuracy. In this case, I had to reach out to the Planning Board to make them aware I was not criticizing their intentions, but only disagreeing with their conclusions. There is a fundamental difference as I believe all of the members of the Planning Board have the best interests of Gardner in mind when making their decisions. We do hope that their final recommendation is to support Mayor Nicholsonโs position on the Route 140 Zoning change when they reconsider and reevaluate the facts.
Responsible Paraphrasing
Now how would my statement have been responsibly paraphrased? There is an online AI tool called quillbot.com which took my statement, โ The Planning Board did not act with common sense in this matterโ and restated it as โThe Planning Board handled this situation without using common sense.โ As you can see, it is not exactly the same, but it does not erroneously change my statement to make it appear I was judging the intent of the Planning Board.
Final Comment
We believe the Gardner News is a fine publication and that Stephen Landry is a fine reporter. However, we fundamentally disagree with some of their approaches and would have preferred not to be forced into making a public big deal of this. I am smart enough to recognize that I approach life with my unique lens and have a built-in bias even though I donโt intend it. Therefore, I believe that by publishing Press Releases in their entirety,(usually in PDF format) and by publishing the actual AUDIO of interviews and the AUDIO of various meetings, we do a much better public service. Editorial โ Gardner MA โ Route 140 Proposed Zoning Change Is Common Sense Choice
Approval of Mayor Michael Nicholsonโs Route 140 Zoning Change proposal is simple common sense. Since being sworn in, the Mayor has looked at properties throughout the City in an effort for them to have their โbest useโ. The Development Department has been active in recruiting new property owners to renovate blighted properties. Unused City properties have been put up for sale to get them back on the tax rolls. Maki Park and Park Street Park have been authorized to provide additional recreational space. The City is getting State help to market the former Garbose Metal site.
Business Interest in Gardner
Thereโs been lots of interest from companies who want to come to Gardner, but need more land than is currently available. This change would not only mitigate that problem, but also allay concerns over too much potential future residential development in the Route 140 area which would have an actual adverse environmental and safety impact, and create a strain on City resources. In our opinion, the Planning Board erred in not recommending the Route 140 zoning change. This is something the Gardner City Council can correct on Monday. To the citizens of Gardner: Mayor Nicholson has proven he has your back โ we all can see the changes for the better. Show your support by showing up at the Public Hearing Monday, April 3, 2023 at 6:30pm and speak in favor of Common Sense.

EDITORIAL: Gardner MA City Council Funding Approval
EDITORIAL: In what could be the biggest investment bargain in Municipal Government History, the Gardner City Council has approved Mayor Michael Nicholsonโs request for $60,000.
The money will be used to hire a 3rd party to go after EXTRA grants which current staff does not have sufficient manpower to pursue.. The City will pay for the time involved. With so many grant opportunities out there which could have fallen through the cracks, we predict this could be a $6 million Yes and a potentially huge return on investment. The City will receive monthly updates so weโll all know very soon whether the idea is a stroke of genius like we think or a big flop. My bet is on the Chair City every time. We applaud the Gardner City Council for carefully considering and ultimately approving the Mayorโs idea. EDITORIAL: Impact of Shoe Sizes on the City of Gardner MA
Gardner Magazine chooses not to publish the salaries of all City Employees because we see no useful purpose in it. However, we will say that it is great that Gardner is finally getting close to having competitive pay for talented individuals such as Gardnerโs School Superintendent who arguably has done an awesome job in lifting up Gardner Education to its highest level in decades, those in Public Safety who keep residents safe everyday, those talented in Government who have helped to lift Gardner out of its malaise, and those gifted teachers who have earned higher pay by staying with the Gardner School system. Worth every penny in my opinion.
More important is the Impact of Shoes. My freedom of information request would be to get the shoe size of everyone in the employ of the City. After all, bigger feet must wear City floors and carpets more and perhaps these individuals should be taxed for this benefit. (LOL). Positive reporting is what youโll get out of Gardner Magazine. Editorial: Support of Single Tax Rate for Chair City of Gardner Massachusetts
I support a Single Tax Rate for the City of Gardner because I believe success should be rewarded.
Throughout the State of Mass, some cities have allowed a split rate to pass. However, the only thing I see, is this has caused many businesses to flee. Where others have closed doors to progress, Gardner is open for success. Mayor Nicholson and his team. City Council members, to public acclaim. The Commonwealth and Uncle Sam, have released grants like an open dam. Because the Chair City gets it. If you want business, you must earn it. Gardner Public Schools is drawing companies, by enhancing kids opportunities. And Gardner has not been greedy, levying less, with thanks from the needy. When the business climate is strong, itโs always a winning song.
Please stick with a single rate, success will reward you from this date. If this City were a movie, an Academy Award would come from its story. Support the Board of Assessors wishes. Itโs like stocking a pond with business fishes. Itโs simply better bait, so say yes on this date, to a single rate.And one more thing, Gardnerโs a pretty great place. In our Whatโs Next interview, Mayor Nicholson tells a story about how a simple changing of light bulbs restored some lighting ,โis there actually a lot simpler resolution to the problem than we thought it was?.โ So I decided to follow his example and let a simple picture tell me everything. Where it not for Gardner Square Two arranging for these lights and decorations, I would not have realized that Gardner City Hall is actually โGardner City Allโ. The angle of the picture I needed to take to show the lights revealed everything about people working together in this great community.

Editorial: Gardner MA Should be Very Proud of Its Public Schools and its Teachers
From Gardner Magazine Publisher Werner Poegel: Residents of Gardner should be extremely proud of Gardner Public Schools. Included in our article of the November 14, 2022 School Committee Meeting is the complete packet featuring reports from each school. There was clearly good news to tell. Unknown to many was the progress made in the District on so many levels over the past few years. And even with the challenges of the pandemic, Gardner has made progress in its MCAS Scores. Now you know. Gardner has a School System which is the envy of others.

We spoke at length and with specifics on how Gardner has managed to draw the attention of other Districts in the United States and abroad for its record of accelerated improvements to Education in Gardner. So when people ask you where your kids go to school you can proudly say, my kids go to Gardner Public Schools, and they are very lucky to be sure. With 4 additional businesses in Downtown Gardner, according to Mayor Nicholson โThis makes 27 NEW businesses in Gardner since January!โ He also stated, โ5-12 are in the pipeline to be opening in the next few months.โ The Mayor also enumerated that โ7 existing businesses have expanded their locations and increased their offerings, 12 buildings downtown have new landlords that are renovating their properties, 175ish apartments are being either renovated or newly constructed in the Downtown alone.โ

Social Media Poll: 89% Would Like Taxi Service in Gardner MA
The question asked in a post was โWould you like to see a taxi company in the Gardner, Templeton, Phillipston area?โ There were 99 total votes. 89% responded yes, 7% responded no, and 3% responded unsure.
Online search results are not reliable on this subject as a previous company, Smileys Taxi, which used to operate from Central Street in Gardner some years ago is still listed. Fortunately, the number listed is not in service so no Gardner resident is getting calls for a taxi at that number. The regional bus company, MART, is the first search result on Google. Seniors and disabled individuals are those who typically have the most trouble with driving. The City of Gardner has information on transportation on its website, CLICK HERE.
Opening a Taxi Company
So what do you do if you want to open a taxi company in Gardner? According to the Records Department at the Gardner PD, the company would go through the Building Department for a particular physical location just like any other business. Each taxi vehicle and each taxi driver also goes through a licensing process through the Gardner Police Department.

Respectful Teenagers in Gardner MA are Genuine Gardner Assets
Our ongoing โGenuine Gardnerโ feature showcases what is genuinely good about Gardner. In this case, an observation of Genuinely Respectful Teenagers (GRTโs) at the Jackson Skateboard Park off School Street. These teenagers invited us to take a picture of their activities. They were kind to one another and it was another proud moment for Genuine Gardner MA. We were actually there to take a photo of the place where the portable ice skating rink will be located this winter, by the basketball courts at Jackson Playground.

Gardner MA Facebook Group Moderator Pauly Potato Spreading Fake News
An Editorial by Gardner Magazine Publisher Werner Poegel โ There are a number of very healthy Facebook Groups serving the Greater Gardner MA area. Most Admins make an effort to foster respectful speech and do not knowingly pass along false information. However, Pauly Potato is the exception. In his group, rather than simply moderating discussions among group members, the admin openly attacks political candidates and officials he doesnโt like, often taking portions of news items and twisting them into falsehoods. The result: people are getting FAKE NEWS.
On Transparency
For example, the Mayor was criticized for lack of transparency when Gardner MA has earned the reputation of being a model of municipal transparency: winning an award for its projects map, getting a perfect audit for 2021, and having one of only a handful of Mayors in the nation who do a regular Weekly update. CASE CLOSED, on this subject Pauly Potato, you spread FAKE NEWS.
On Paving of the Roads
DPW has been criticized for its lack of paving roads when the truth is it would take more than 1 ยฝ times the entire City budget for the year to pave all the roads. CASE CLOSED, on this subject Pauly Potato, you spread FAKE NEWS.
On Ovila Case Playground
There has also been criticism of the lack of maintenance of Ovila Case Playground. Actually, the City has invested the most money there in the last two years, adding basketball courts and a walking trail in May of 2021 and new picnic tables/charcoal grills in July of 2021. The electric system and lights are currently being upgraded. Around $115,000 in new equipment was added to the location from various funding to replace the deteriorating wood structures. Once free cash is certified by the Department of Revenue, additional expenditures on Ovila Case are planned. So the DPW, The Mayor, and the City are paying attention to Ovila Case. CASE CLOSED, on this subject, Pauly Potato, you spread FAKE NEWS.
On the Proposed Sale of Two Schools
Now, the last example today is an especially misleading example of FAKE NEWS by Pauly Potato: The sale of Prospect Street School and School Street School. Prospect Street appraises at $295,000, but would need substantial investment for use other than a school, so the Mayorโs request is to set a minimum price of $100,000 for it. School Street School is a real nightmare, with an appraisal that ran into negative numbers. Therefore, a request to start bids at $1. In both cases. getting the properties back on the tax rolls would be to the advantage of the City. Is it a bad thing that Mayor Nicholson is actually taking his fiduciary responsibility seriously and thinking of the taxpayers? We think not. Once more, Pauly Potato, CASE CLOSED, on this subject Pauly Potato, you spread FAKE NEWS.
Conclusion
While the City of Gardner is very lucky right now to have responsible officials in all facets of its government, we urge any citizen with questions about what any public official is proposing to simply ask for more information. Gardner MA is rare in its transparency with the City Council Agenda and Council packet made public before meetings, with meetings made public on YouTube, and of course Gardner Magazine makes most major meetings and Mayorโs Update available in AUDIO format, easily playable on any device. And, you can always seek an appointment with the Mayor. But, whatever you do, donโt take Pauly Potatoโs word for it โ Your brain will end up like french fries in a paper bag, SOGGY. And Pauly Potato, you have been mashed.

With all of the positive improvements in Downtown Gardner, itโs no wonder thereโs renewed enthusiasm.
Downtown Gardner MA is truly a special place, about to begin a period of renewed vitality.
Hereโs what I think needs to happen going forward:
1. Efforts should continue to spearhead rehab efforts where ever they are needed. No detail should be overlooked. โ- 2. Gardner Square Two should get in the habit of listing its events with at least minimal details at least one year out. โ- 3. Downtown Merchants need to get behind the newly revitalized Gardner Square Two. They are now ready for action and need your support. The best way to do that is to become an active member if you have a business. If youโre an individual Gardner citizen, show your pride in Downtown by getting an individual membership. โ- 4. We should make a big deal out of this Christmas season. As Gardner became a City in 1923, this Christmas 2022 is Gardnerโs 100th Christmas as a City. โ- 5. Efforts should continue to fill up available storefronts. There are so many monetary incentives in place, youโd have to find a reason not to open a store or other business location in Downtown Gardner. โ- 6. Downtown Gardner. This is the year its greatness really starts to take off again!

On August 19, 2022 we tried an experiment โ putting together our own Chair City Update because the Mayorโs version was unavailable due to staffing issues. We can confidently say citizens overwhelmingly prefer Mayor Nicholson to the robot. While the Mayorโs AUDIO update of August 5, 2022 has been listened to 3,654 times, August 12th update 3,039 (correction: 2,839) times, our AI voiced update got only 90 listens since 2pm yesterday. Next time the film crew is unavailable Mr. Mayor, please take us up on our offer to record an AUDIO update. The Chair City is really interested in what you have to say.
The popular Gardner Mayor got 80 percent of the vote in the last election. When asked in April, 2022 about his political future, Nicholson appeared satisfied with his current role as Mayor stating heโll keep the job as long as the voters will have him. If he continues to have successes in moving the Chair City forward, we predict the Mayorโs political future has much more potential than he now realizes.

A Gardner Magazine Editorial, Mayor Nicholson, Strength of Character.
During the course of holding Political Office, every office holder encounters that moment when character is tested.ย Mayor Nicholson is having his moment with the Gardner Police Department situation.ย ย
Despite enormous pressure to speak more openly about various details involved in the ongoing Police Department challenges, the Mayor has elected to stick with his plan โ protect the taxpayers of Gardner, honor the due process rights of all involved, and stay the course with untold patience.ย ย ย While the Press may be irritated with the lack of information and citizens speculate about the who, what, when, where, and why, the Mayor is doing what a great manager does โ the right thing as he sees it on a daily basis, making sure that the citizens of Gardner have a well-functioning Police Department which serves their daily needs and keeps the citizenry safe.ย ย ย In our opinion, the Mayorโs actions in this process including his unwavering resolve to handle the situation without giving in to political pressure shows a tremendous strength of character.ย ย ย It would be easy to do a tell-all interview and it would get lots of attention.ย ย It is much harder to be reserved with information, but in the end what is important is the best interests of the City of Gardner.ย ย So our advice to the community and other members of the press is this:ย Be vigilant, hold your leaders accountable, but also recognize when youโve finally got someone with Strength of Character who doesnโt take the easy way out, but whoโs actually looking out for you:ย Mayor Michael Nicholson.ย ย ย ย

- Navigating the Personal Conscience of Covid (2/15/2022)
Unfortunately during the past couple of years, so much around the subject of Covid has become political when it really should simply be about health.ย ย Advocates for masks, vaccines, social distancing, and lockdowns have over sold their wares, with the result being a less-informed, often confused, and sometimes angry public.ย ย Our GardnerMagazine.com article on the Real Risk of Dying from Covid attempts to deliver truthful data to you and has several important conclusions: For that article, CLICK HERE.
- Getting a vaccine reduces your chances of getting Covid by a lot.ย ย And if you get the disease, the most protected are those with a booster dose.ย Bottom line: The infinitesimal risk of vaccine side effects are not a good reason to avoid getting the vaccine as the statistics prove vaccinated people are much more likely to survive Covid-19.ย Any questions, ask your doctor.
- Masks are helpful in reducing viral transmission, but thereโs so much more to it.ย Our article includes an 11 page PDF going into great detail about the math and science of droplet transmission.
- The simple act of washing your hands reduces your risk of contracting Covid and other contagious diseases.
- Knowing that vaccines are not perfect and you still have a chance of getting the virus, and knowing that masks are definitely not perfect, you reduce your risk of Covid exposure by simply not being around a lot of people.ย For some of us, this is possible.ย For others, it would require avoiding life, which has its own risk of consequences from the dangers of isolation.
- This pandemic has taught us a very important lesson:ย If you are sick with anything such as a common cold or the flu, staying away from people is a great kindness on your part.ย Each person you donโt infect canโt infect someone else.ย ย ย We used to praise people for having a 100% attendance record at work.ย If you truly werenโt sick, thatโs great. But if you were, you probably cost your employer quite a bit of money from the other workers who got sick, but didnโt have as strong an immune system and so absolutely had to stay home for work.ย ย Common sense should apply in each individual circumstance.ย And now we know, if you have a cold or flu, but still have to shop at the grocery store, wear a mask as an act of kindness to someone else.

Increasing Fees a HUGE MISTAKE
Dear Mayor Nicholson, ย ย ย A while back I wrote an article on efficient Gardner City government when I confirmed with the City Clerk that the December 2013 posted City fees were still in effect.ย ย Today, Iโm objectively reporting on the City Councilโs plans to bring Gardnerโs Fire and Building fees up to that of area communities.ย ย ย However, I canโt help wonder if this is a HUGE MISTAKE.ย ย As you are well aware, many decisions are market driven and Gardner has been a very favorable place to do business, arguably the lower fees have actually made money for Gardner and contributed to Gardnerโs success.ย ย So many wonder, what is Gardnerโs secret ingredient for success?ย Arguably, the current fee structure is one of several favorable ingredients.ย I urge you to leave well enough alone and convince the City Council not to increase any fees.ย In fact, publicizing your realization that maybe leaving fees as is until at least 2030 would be a great move.

For National Compliment Day which is Monday, January 24, 2022, Iโd like to pay a HUGE COMPLIMENT to Mayor Michael Nicholson and his entire TEAM in all of the various departments for the various hard work, guidance, patience, and kindness during the past year. Iโve also noticed that meetings open and close with a prayer which indicates a certain gracious humility on the part of our local officials. Public Safety Police and Fire are top notch. And everybody seems to work well together with the medical community and area non-profit organizations. Keep up the good work and best wishes and good health to all in 2022!

We used this old graphic so you could not guess at what location I had the problem. I also made sure they had posted an โout of orderโ sign before running this article.
Some Compressed Air Stations Not Working in Greater Gardner MA
This publisher had his own experience today at a Greater Gardner area location after finding a few out of order due to the cold weather. The air didnโt work, but unlike most locations, it wasnโt posted as out of order. When I reported it and asked for my money back, I found out that an employee knew it wasnโt working. The location manager asked me to look on the side of the machine, get the number to get a refund. I had to call the owner who is known for integrity โ the owner called the manager and told him to refund what I paid and to put out a sign so no other folks would get cheated. Iโm not mentioning the location because 1. They ultimately did the right thing and 2. Gardner Magazine is about being positive. 3. If we canโt say something nice about a business, we just donโt say it, period. Hereโs what I told the manager of the location. It doesnโt make sense to lose customers over a small amount of money. I would have refunded the customer immediately, posted an out-of-order sign immediately, and gotten the locationโs money back from the third party vendor. In the end, itโs a really good customer service lesson for any retailer in a similar situation.

Gardner Magazine has charted the State data in graphic form (just click on either image at left for large view) to illustrate the wide-ranging impact of Covid 19 among all age groups. Hereโs the problem: Covid continues to spread because of unvaccinated people AND because vaccines are not 100% effective. While most younger people do survive, the average age of death is still 75. Conclusion: Getting the vaccine could save the life of your older relative, friend, or neighbor. Think about it.
