As of September 10, 2026, Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper has issued updated drought declarations for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. While the Central and Western regions, along with Dukes County, have returned to or remain at normal conditions, other areas continue to face significant hydrological deficits. Cape Cod and Nantucket County are currently at Level 2 – Significant Drought, while the Connecticut River Valley, Northeast, and Southeast regions are at Level 1 – Mild Drought.
Despite a wet July, a drier-than-normal August—characterized by rainfall totals as low as 1.5 inches in some counties—has maintained pressure on state water resources. Long-term rainfall deficits persist in various regions, necessitating continued water conservation efforts by residents, businesses, and municipalities.
State agencies and the Drought Management Task Force (DMTF) continue to monitor conditions, with the next formal assessment scheduled for October 8, 2026.
