Traffic Commission Addresses Signs, Speed Cushions, Accessibility, Visibility, and Funding Needs

The Gardner Traffic Commission met on September 8, 2026, to address various public safety and infrastructure concerns throughout the city.
The members discussed the need for a pedestrian crosswalk sign on Main Street, though progress is currently stalled due to lack of funding as the sign would need to be a hard-wired unit at a cost of $8000 due to a shadow that would impede a less expensive solar solution. Grant funding will be sought. The issue is that heavy pedestrian traffic and low visibility have led to “lose calls” where pedestrians were nearly struck by vehicles.
Significant time was spent debating the effectiveness of a 60-day stop sign trial at the intersection of Cottage and Park Streets, with some members questioning if the signs are being used for speed control rather than safety. Public response has been mixed. Some residents complained of “inconvenience” while others raised concerns about stopping at the base of a hill during winter. A special meeting may be held on September 29th to decide the fate of the signs before the trial expires.
Chestnut Street at Temple Street Visibility – The commission addressed a visibility hazard where parked cars obstruct the view of drivers turning onto Chestnut Street. A motion passed to move the “No Parking” sign back to create a 20-foot clearance from the driveway. This change aims to allow for one parking space while significantly improving the sightline for vehicles entering the heavy-traffic road.
The commission also approved new handicap parking designations to comply with state accessibility requirements and moved forward with a speed cushion pilot program on Nichols and Pine Streets. A 60 day trial is expected to begin in October with the cushions to be removed before winter to avoid interference with snowplows.
Finally, officials shared updates on upcoming road paving projects and the potential use of GPS data to monitor city-wide traffic patterns. The special tool would use vehicle GPS and app data to track speeds city-wide, creating “hotspot maps” for the GIS coordinator and validate whether resident speeding complaints are anecdotal or data-supported.
