$1 May be the Answer to the Templeton MA Budget Woes

The Situation
The Templeton 3 Hour Select Board meeting of August 10, 2026 was a preview of decisions which need to be made at the next meeting of August 17, 2026. Central to the discussion: the critical $1.1 million municipal budget deficit. This financial crisis follows the passage of the regional school budget and the failure of previous tax overrides in May. The town is currently operating at a deficit, spending funds it does not yet have, which the board characterizes as “irresponsible” and “rolling the dice.”
The Possible $1 per Day Solution
The Select Board reached a consensus to pursue a second override. If for example an override of $1.1 million was passed that would equate to roughly $359 per property taxpayer, or $1 per day. The follow-up meeting scheduled for August 17th is expected to result in the finalized dollar amount and the specific “nuclear options” for service reductions. The $1 per day illustration is used to demonstrate that a small amount of sacrifice will produce the big dividend of preserving what Templeton residents have come to expect in the form of certain services and amenities.
During the Meeting
During the August 10th meeting, Department heads presented “bare-bones” cuts, but emphasized that significant savings can only be achieved through personnel layoffs in the town’s largest departments: Police, Fire, and Public Works.
