- Band Medal (5/23/2024)
Investment in Gardner Music Pays Off in Form of Gold Medal
Youngsters with musical talent were congratulated after winning a GOLD MEDAL. Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson wrote about the honor stating” Congratulations to the 4th Grade Band at Gardner Elementary School for earning a Gold Medal at the Great East Festival last weekend! This is only the 2nd year since band has been back at Gardner Elementary for students in grades 3 and 4, and these students were in the first iteration of the band last year. To have them bring home a gold medal just one year later is a tremendous accomplishment, and I am so proud of these students.”
Investment in Music: “When I was first elected mayor, one of my priorities was to bring band back to our elementary school, and we did it in the first budget I was able to propose. The City Council also approved my proposal for $100,000 across the music programs in all of our schools for new equipment and programming upgrades last year. Today, over 200 students in 3rd and 4th grade are participating in the program- over 1/3 of the school’s overall population. Music education and music in our schools/community is so important, and I’m proud to see what we have accomplished in Gardner with the amazing team we have.”
Thank yous: “Thank you to Michelle Heffner and the Administration of Gardner Elementary School and Gardner Public Schools for your continued support of the arts and music- in particular this program! Go Wildcats!“

Monument Park Summer Concert Series Back for 2024
The Gardner Bandstand Committee met at 3pm on April 25, 2024 to finalize the 2024 Gardner Summer Concert Series at Monument Park. Gardner Magazine has received a preliminary list which was released prior to the meeting. However, with the first concert slated to be on June 22nd, we will wait to publish the list until it is finalized and confirmed.
We can tell you that Viva Las Elvis is being removed from the calendar as the artist has asked for more money than what is feasible. Listen to the meeting on any device, CLICK PLAY
The 2023 Concert Series was successful due to the positive reception to the quality of the performances and to the cooperation of Mother Nature who provided good weather on some occasions. We will also be publishing the schedule of the Lithuanian Outing Association and the PACC.
Meeting of April 25, 2024 Details
Gardner Magazine got an inside look at the hard work put in by the Bandstand Committee. For those attending the fabulous Summer Concerts, its a FREE concert. For the Bandstand Committee, the reality is a juggling of funds and the search for sponsors and donations to make each year’s series of concerts happen. Sponsors are always welcome. Donations are always welcome. The deadline to get sponsor info to the printer is sometime in May so there’s still time to come on board. Contact Marry Rojas, the DPW Administrator Coordinator at (978) 630-8195 or email: marryrojas@gardner-ma.gov. And note there are 2r’s in her first name just like we have it here.
The meeting opened with a discussion of the artist, Mr. Fontaine who was asking for more money. First year was 800, last year was 1200, and the request was for 3500 for this year. The committee decided to go with Holdin’ Back the 60’s which has offered to do the same date for $599. Members of the committee discussed the status of various sponsors. It is very clear that sponsor support and donations are crucial. As one of the committee members stated, “I think what people don’t realize is, you know, the city doesn’t…Well, no. The city doesn’t supply any money. The city doesn’t give us anything. We have to do this on sponsors.” Donations and sponsorships are critical as bands keep raising prices.

Gardner MA School Committee Wraps Up Before Fall
In its last meeting before September, the Gardner MA School Committee met on June 12, 2023. The meeting was unique in that many students were recognized by Superintendent Mark Pellegrino in the first 10 minutes or so of he meeting. Listen to the meeting on any device. CLICK PLAY.
Reports were presented regarding facilities and finances. Grant Director Courtney Dunn went over various grants in detail.
The Superintendent was deemed by the Committee to have made significant progress on his goals with a performance considered proficient or exemplary. He was then given a 5 percent raise. Last year he was offered the same and announced he was taking only 2 percent. With the absence of such a declaration this year, it is assumed the honored Superintendent is going to accept the larger amount.
The Helen Mae Sauter School and other nearby property was declared surplus, with ownership transferred to the City of Gardner as a whole. This will allow the City to proceed with agreements such as one contemplated with GALA, the Gardner Area League of Artists which is considering the facility for its new home. It is the dream of some for the facility to become the Chair City Arts and Music Center.

20 GALA Artists Participated in Year-Long Gardner MA Painting Contest
Artwork to be sold at Fireworks this year…

The 1st place winner will be auctioned off to the public with the winning bid split between the artist and KPBA. All of the other artwork will be on sale with the proceeds split between the artists and KPBA. Art from a second contest will also be sold with the same split – in this case the artists were given a mystery box of organic materials with some paint and asked to create a picture.

- 3 Centers (5/2/2023)
Finding the best use for existing City-owned buildings, getting vacant buildings occupied again, and aiding in the sale of buildings needing renovation is yielding visibly positive results in Gardner, MA. Most notably is the recent sale of the Garbose Building with renovations already underway.
The Story of 3 Centers in the Chair City of Gardner MA
Community Center
The Community Center at the site of the former Waterford Street School is a done deal, with some tenants of the building already moving some things in. It will house the C.A.C., the Gardner Senior Center, GAAMHA, and Growing Places with all being able to expand services as a result of the move. Official opening is anticipated sometime this year.
Visitors Center
The Visitors Center may become so again, or it could be the site of a new restaurant or even the Chamber of Commerce which is interested in the site but is also looking at the former Gardner News building. Right now, Gardner awaits a creative land swap whereby Gardner gets ownership to the Visitors Center and the State of Massachusetts will get title to some land across from Dunn’s Park. Legislative approval for the swap could take some time.
Chair City Arts & Music Center?
The City of Gardner has been speaking with various parties interested in utilizing the former Helen Mae Sauter School. GALA, the Gardner Area League of Artists is in the process of reviewing a lease for the building. Will the building become the Chair City Arts & Music Center? We will let you know when we have any official word. Shown in our graphic is an AI altered picture with a convenient Art Center entrance at the left of the building.

- City of Faith (3/4/2023)
Chair City of Faith – Poem by Werner Poegel
Dear Lord we give you thanks for this Chair City of Faith
Since 18th Century Great Words of praise are saith
For he who sits upon a Chair so skillfully made
Or grabs the ground underneath a tree of shade. So fortunate to be in a place which cares for one another
Friends, strangers kindness shown just like our brother.
A community thus constructed of sturdy stuff is made
More likely to grow and prosper rather than to fade.As we March forward, thank you for our prosperity
And remind us to be good stewards with integrity,
Guide us to be mindful of those who have needs,
Teach us to celebrate with humility what succeeds. In this year of the most powerful Centennial reflection,
On history’s actions taken on almost every selection.
Of lessons learned sometimes one more than enough
To manage not only what is easy but also what is tough. We ask you help us carry forward a spirit which conceives
Ideas which grow the City and citizen concern relieves,
Success of physical projects and those of people served,
Blessings upon this Chair City of Faith then be deserved.
