Community Garden at St. Paul’s in Gardner MA Now has 27 Beds

Originally established 2 years ago with a $3000 grant from the Diocese, the Community Garden located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Cross Street in Gardner almost doubled its capacity in 2023 and now has more than 2 dozen beds. Mayor Michael Nicholson posted on April 28th,”Big shout out to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Gardner MA for starting up their community gardens again this year to support the Gardner CAC! They are adding even more raised beds to bring the total to 27! Thanks for all you do for the City and it’s residents! “. Fresh produce grown on the property is distributed to area families by the CAC.

The sign states “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” – Matthew 25:35. Distribution of food grown will occur through the Food Pantry of the Community Action Committee. The CAC serves disadvantaged individuals in Gardner, Ashburnham, Baldwinville, Hubbardston, Otter River, Templeton, and Westminster. Gardner CAC website, CLICK HERE. • Drivers no longer have the right to turn right on red in Cambridge
by Lauren Melendez and Mike Pescaro on May 9, 2024 at 12:12 am

Drivers aren’t legally allowed to turn right on red anymore in Cambridge, Massachusetts. State law allows drivers to make right turns at red lights unless otherwise noted by “No turn on red” signs. Those signs now bar the maneuver at every traffic light in Cambridge. Two years ago, city leaders approved the plan. The city recently finished installing signs at intersections. “What happens when people are trying to turn right on red is that they are really focused on finding that gap in traffic in front of them, and then they frequently will not then double-check for pedestrians or bikes,” said Cambridge Transportation Commissioner Brooke McKenna. She and the majority of the Cambridge City Council passed a resolution in 2022 banning drivers and cyclists from turning right on red to prioritize safety. This already applied to 80% of the city’s intersection, but she says about 225 more signs were needed to make it clear. “We do have a lot of people in Cambridge who are passing through, and since it’s not the standard across the state, it’s really important to have the ‘No turn on red’ signs,'” McKenna said. Since 2019, Cambridge has averaged 157 crashes a year that are serious enough to require an emergency response. The city says prohibiting right turns on red as part of its “Vision Zero” plan will ultimately save lives. “We are not increasing enforcement of these violations, but CPD will always enforce when a violation is observed or if we receive community feedback,” the Cambridge Police Department said in a statement. The department added that it could not say how many tickets it had given out for illegal right turns at red lights because it falls under a broader law including illegal left turns. • Parents of Harmony Montgomery's half-brother fight to make victim impact statement at killer's sentencing
by Michael Rosenfield on May 8, 2024 at 11:46 pm

Thursday is sentencing day for Adam Montgomery, the New Hampshire man convicted of killing his daughter. The disappearance of Harmony Montgomery made national headlines. The two fathers of Harmony’s half-brother, Jamison, are raising red flags about Thursday’s hearing. Jamison’s adoptive parents, Johnathon and Blair, say they deserve to be among the family members making a victim impact statement. “It’s important we look Adam Montgomery in the eye and tell him what he’s done to Jamison,” said Johnathon Bobbitt-Miller. Jamison’s dads have been told that they can make a statement at the sentencing hearing, but only if they use Jamison’s words, which they say would be much too traumatic for their son. “What 7-year-old can walk into a courtroom and articulate the pain Adam caused?” asked Johnathon. “Jamison knows Harmony passed away, he knows someone hurt her, and didn’t take care of her, but he doesn’t know these graphic details, and quite frankly, he shouldn’t.” Retired Massachusetts juvenile court judge Carol Erskine, who handled Jamison’s adoption, says it would be highly inappropriate to allow Jamison to address a convicted killer, or to have him write a statement. “It seems obvious to me a 7-year-old can’t stand up in court and talk about the devastation and sadness that he feels over the death of a sibling,” said Erskine. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office told NBC10 Boston that Jamison’s parents, by state law, are only allowed to make a statement that’s “a reflection of the victim’s words or other expression of their feelings,” and they are not allowed to read their own statement. “Our son will forever have a void in his heart,” said Johnathon Bobbitt-Miller. “He will forever miss his sister, he will forever question why was I given a safe family and why was she given to a monster.” The boy’s parents will be given a chance to make their case to the judge on Thursday before the sentencing hearing gets underway, in a last-ditch effort to show the judge they be allowed to speak. • FBI searches Stoneham home of man previously convicted of child pornography charge
by Staff Reports on May 8, 2024 at 11:11 pm

The Federal Bureau of Investigation searched a home in Stoneham, Massachusetts, registered to a man who was previously convicted of distributing child pornography. Neighbors on Hancock Street took photos Wednesday of law enforcement at the home of James McCarty. In March, McCarty was caught trying to enter the South Elementary School campus armed with two knives. Authorities have not said whether the search Wednesday was related to that incident. Investigators said McCarty was believed to have been having a mental health crisis at the time of the incident in March. He was never in contact with any kids. Parents criticized the district for not notifying them about the incident until days later, with some calling for the resignation of Superintendent David Ljungberg. The school committee apologized to parents for “distress” caused by the incident, and Ljungberg did not resign. McCarty was previously registered as a level one sex offender for dissemination of child pornography after a conviction in 2013. He is no longer required to register. He was investigated by the FBI Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force, NBC10 Boston learned after the incident at the school. • Boston City Council considers how to address antisemitism
by Matt Prichard on May 8, 2024 at 9:40 pm

The conversation around antisemitism stretches from Washington, D.C., to Boston City Hall. Councilors considered a resolution on Wednesday recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month while writing that rising antisemitism across the United States and the globe needs to be acknowledged. “This is an imperative to care for all, but particularly the most vulnerable,” said District 8 Councilor Sharon Durkan. “It is important that we guard against and denounce rising antisemitism,” said Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune. Twelve of 13 councilors in attendance approved the resolution, but District 2 representative Ed Flynn feels a deeper conversation is needed. Flynn filed a separate resolution, specifically denouncing acts of antisemitism at demonstrations across Massachusetts. “Boston as you know has a huge number of students throughout the city. Many of them are Jewish. We should be a welcoming city,” Flynn said. Even so, the two resolutions were deemed redundant, and under council rules, only the first to file moves forward. That parliamentary protocol set Flynn’s proposal aside and left a rift over how to approach the issue moving forward. Flynn did vote in favor of the other resolution and plans to continue to advocate for more conversation in the days ahead. • Nantucket short-term rental debate will continue after town meeting vote
by Eli Rosenberg on May 8, 2024 at 8:15 pm

As Nantucket ramps up for its busiest time of the year, there is uncertainty about where everyone who visits will stay. Residents of the Massachusetts island voted at the annual town meeting Tuesday to oppose a measure that, according to The Boston Globe, would have broadly legalized short-term rentals. The failure of Article 59 means the debate will continue over the legality of rentals from companies like Airbnb and Vrbo. “There is just a lot of uncertainty and fear, and I think the local population is divided on this,” said Kathy Baird, who supports short-term rentals on Nantucket. “There is really no other place for people to stay when they visit Nantucket. It is a tourist destination, there are between 800 and 900 hotel rooms.” Residents voted last May against a proposal that would have prohibited short-term rentals in residential zones unless the owner either lives in the home for at least six months per year or uses long-term rentals more than short-term rentals. In March, a court ruled Nantucket’s zoning laws, as they stood, did not allow short-term rentals as the main purpose of the property. “I feel that if this passes, it is a gun to my head, because I live in a residential neighborhood and I don’t want and I don’t want it to become filled with commercial short-term rentals,” one person said at Tuesday’s meeting. Town officials told the crowd Tuesday that the results of the vote should not impact summer rentals. Still, there remains uncertainty. “People are canceling their reservations for the summer because they don’t know if it is an illegal operation or not,” said Baird. “Who knows what is going to happen? Nobody does.” Another measure, Article 60, passed Tuesday night. It mostly bans corporate ownership of short-term rentals. Another town meeting is set for mid-September.
