Serious Petersham Accident (9/17/2026)

Motorcyclist Sustains Serious Injuries in Collision with Bear

A 71-year old male Orange MA resident sustained serious injuries in a collision with a 160 pound bear while traveling on Route 122 in Petersham. The man was flown via Life Flight to U-Mass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The bear was deceased at the scene.

Petersham Fire Department posted on September 13th: “Emergency crews responded today to a serious motorcycle vs. bear accident on New Salem Road near the New Salem town line (Route 122).The motorcyclist sustained injuries requiring air medical transport by UMass Memorial LifeFlight. Athol Fire Department transported the patient to the landing zone, where Life Flight-2 took over patient care and transported the patient by air to the UMASS trauma center. From the Gardner Fire Department: “Yesterday, Group 2 responded to CVS on Main Street for a reported building collapse. Firefighters arrived to find a large portion of the façade that had broken free from the building and collapsed. Firefighters immediately evaluated the damage and evacuated the store.

After further investigation, a large portion of the wall immediately adjacent to the collapsed area showed signs of bowing. Contractors were required to remove this dangerous section of the wall before the store was allowed to reopen for business. As of this morning, CVS is back open, with the exception of the drive-thru.There were no injuries reported”

The City of Gardner will hold a memorial ceremony on Friday, 9/11/26 at Monument Park at 5 p.m.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts holds a deeply tragic connection to the September 11, 2001 attacks, serving as the physical point of origin for the destruction in New York City and suffering an immense loss of local lives.

Aircraft Connection: Boston Logan International Airport was used by the al-Qaeda hijackers with 10 hijackers successfully breaching security to board to morning transcontinental flights bound for Los Angeles. American Airlines Flight 11 was a Boeing 767 that departed Logan and was crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46am. United Airlines Flight 175 was a Boeing 767 that also departed Logan and crashed into the South Tower at 9:03am. Because both aircraft wer fueled for a cross-country trip to California, the immense volume of jet fuel caused the rapid, catastrophic structural failure and ultimate collapse of both towers.

Fatalities Connection: 206 people with direct ties to Massachusetts were killed in the attacks including victims in the aircraft and on the ground working or attending meetings in the World Trade Center Towers. The youngest victim of the entire 9-11 tragedy was Christine Lee Hanson, a 2 1/2 year old girl from Groton, Massachusetts who was a passenger on Flight 175 with her parents on their way to Disneyland

Local Heroism: Massachusetts also remembers the tragedy through the heroic actions of Madeline “Amy” Sweeney, an American Airlines flight attendant from Acton, Massachusetts, who was working aboard Flight 11. Before the plane struck the North Tower, Sweeney managed to discreetly contact the airline’s ground crew via an airphone, calmly relaying critical specific seat numbers and details about the hijackers that provided the FBI with its first vital leads of the day. Today, the Commonwealth honors her legacy annually with the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery.

Westminster PD Launches New Drone Program

The Town of Westminster MA Police Department has launched a new drone program through a partnership between the Tom Fors Memorial Fund and the Westminster Police Association. $12,000 was donated to purchase a DJI 4T Drone and related equipment.

Westminster PD explained in a post: “In recognition of Tom’s lasting connection to public safety, the drone has been named TF1 in his honor. TF1 may assist with missing-person searches, critical incidents, accident and crime-scene documentation, major community events, and other situations in which an aerial view can help protect the public and emergency responders. TF1 will be operated by trained personnel for legitimate public-safety purposes and will not be used for random or routine surveillance.

On behalf of the Town, the Select Board unanimously accepted this generous gift at Monday night’s meeting.We sincerely thank Davin and Karen Fors, the Tom Fors Memorial Fund, and the Westminster Police Association for making this program possible. DEEP DIVE – Templeton MA Budget Crisis and Override Vote

Templeton Town Administrator James Ryan Explains Upcoming Override Vote

At the Templeton Select Board meeting of August 20, the specific override language was approved. This Press Release explains everything in detail:

On Monday, September 28, 2026, Templeton voters will be asked to decide whether the Town may levy an additional $1,388,534 in property tax revenue through a Proposition 2.5 operational override. If approved by voters and appropriated at Fall Town Meeting, the override will help balance the Fiscal Year 2027 budget and prevent further reductions to key municipal services.

The proposed FY27 budget totals $24,762,222, including Templeton’s assessment for the Narragansett Regional School District (NRSD). The NRSD budget approved at the August 3rd district-wide meeting increased Templeton’s required contribution to $9,829,831. That action created a $1,160,186 shortfall in the Town’s municipal budget, requiring either additional revenue or significant service reductions.

Town officials have already taken extensive steps to reduce spending while preserving core services. Earlier in the budget process, reductions totaling $1,118,700 were ultimately approved by the Select Board. These reductions followed months of public meetings, department reviews, and budget deliberations.

Initial FY27 budget cuts have already resulted in layoffs and service reductions, including the loss of positions in Building and Grounds, Highway, and the Police Department. The proposed override would restore the Police Department’s 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, commonly referred to as the midnight shift, which was eliminated when the fiscal year began on July 1, 2026.

If the override is not approved, or if approved funds are not appropriated at Fall Town Meeting, the Town will need to reduce municipal services by $1,160,186. These reductions would affect non-school services and substantially reduce services in multiple town departments. Cuts to the general fund budget include six police officers, four firefighters, seven DPS employees, loss of hours at the Senior Center, and more.

Residents are encouraged to review the Town’s override information materials, attend public meetings, and participate in the September 28th vote. After dozens of accidents have occurred, the State of Massachusetts is footing the bill to reconfigure the Uptown Rotary section where traffic intersects with Elm Street and Pearl Street. About 2 years ago, Gardner Magazine Publisher Werner Poegel (not an engineer) sent an email to the Mayor and the DPW Director. Among other things Poegel stated, “there’s something wrong with the geometry at that juncture.” Because construction was still underway at the time, they weren’t overly concerned. However, the weird geometry was left that way and caused problems. The public has been complaining since the very first day and area motorists are hoping this redo will fix the travel headache.

It is probably the only project where having NOTHING for a goal is actually a good thing. And the goal of Vision Zero is exactly that – to reduce traffic fatalities in Gardner to ZERO. Vision Zero – July Meeting

The City of Gardner is currently in the third quarter of its Safety Action Plan development, moving from data analysis toward the identification and implementation of safety countermeasures. Central to this initiative is the adoption of a “Vision Zero” policy, which proposes a target of zero fatal and serious injury crashes within the city by 2050, with an interim goal of a 50% reduction by 2035.

Analysis of crash data from 2021 to 2025 reveals a baseline of 47 total fatalities and serious injuries. To address these trends, the city has identified a High Injury Network (HIN) and is launching a demonstration project using temporary “speed cushions” on Nichols and Pine Streets. These efforts, supported by federal grant funding, aim to influence driver behavior through both physical roadway changes and systematic safety countermeasures.

Public input gathered from events such as the library block party and the food truck festival highlighted several recurring issues:
- Distracted Driving and Speeding: Viewed as the primary contributors to safety concerns.
- Non-Vehicular Vulnerability: Lack of safe infrastructure for bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters.
- Educational Needs: Confusion regarding proper navigation of the local Rotary, suggesting a need for better wayfinding and driver education.
he demonstration project data collection begins in September 2026, coinciding with a briefing for the City Council. A formal public engagement session is scheduled for October to present the draft Safety Action Plan and gather feedback on the temporary speed cushions. The ultimate objective remains the creation of a document that allows the city to self-certify for federal funding while making measurable progress toward the elimination of traffic-related fatalities.

Templeton – Phillipston MA School Budget Approval

The Narragansett Regional School District Budget was approved by a margin of just 10 votes (277-267) at a special meeting on August 3, 2026. Now, Templeton leaders are faced with additional cuts to the rest of the municipal budget which will impact some essential services.

The Templeton Select Board recently wrote: “additional $1,100,484 in cuts that would be needed would affect Police, Fire, the Senior Center, the Library, DPW, Building & Grounds, Development Services, and Town Hall. More cuts mean fewer resources to keep Templeton safe, clean, and thriving.” Now that the School Budget has passed, the Select Board will need to discuss next steps.

Rain on the morning of August 3, 2026 has caused flash flooding in the Fitchburg – Leominster – Lunenburg area.

123 Grown – Rebuilding (7/27/2026)

The Walls are Going Up at 123 Grow

The 1 2 3 Grow Child Center Daycare of Gardner is in the process of rebuilding after having been destroyed by fire back in January 2026. The heavy fire at the time was in the rear attic and led to a total loss of the structure. It remained roped off for months until the debris was taken away.

The photos shown are the building in the initial stages of construction. It is unknown at this time whether the building at 838 West Broadway in Gardner will be completed in time for the start of school this Fall, although building appears to be occurring at a rapid pace.

Employment Scams Soar – Gardner Magazine Reports

The landscape of employment fraud has shifted dramatically, with 2025 marking a historic surge in reports. According to Better Business Bureau (BBB) data, nearly 50,000 individuals reported falling victim to employment scams over a three-year period, with report volume in 2025 doubling over the previous year. This escalation is driven primarily by “task-based scams,” a sophisticated tactic that “gamifies” fraudulent work. Bottom Line to all of this: No legit employer ever asks you to send them money. If they do it’s a scam.

Victims are typically recruited via unsolicited text messages to perform simple digital tasks—such as “liking” videos or rating products—in exchange for high payouts. However, these schemes eventually require participants to “unlock” their earnings by depositing their own funds, leading to catastrophic financial losses. The rise of remote work, industry-wide layoffs, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to create convincing fake websites have made these scams increasingly difficult to detect. Current data indicates that reported cases represent only a fraction (approximately 4.8%) of total victims, suggesting a massive undercount of the actual impact.
Water Update 7-24-26 (7/24/2026)

Gardner’s vendor, Veolia confirmed in a Press Release, CLICK HERE, that “the water in the Gardner system has met and continues to meet all regulatory standards.”

Update 7-24-26 11:36am: The City of Gardner anticipates that the Snake Pond Facility will be online by Monday. As Dane Arnold informed us “We are hoping Snake Pond Well is on-line by Monday. It would be on now, but Comcast cannot get communications to work between the plant and Veolia operator..”

City of Gardner Addressing Water Taste and Odor Reports from Residents

As reports came in from Gardner residents over the past few days, the City of Gardner worked immediately to ensure that the water was safe and to address water taste and odor issues.

Gardner Magazine reached out to the City of Gardner and received this response from DPW Director Dane Arnold on July 24, 2026:

“Good morning

The Water Department and Veolia are aware of reports of discoloration, taste, and odor issues affecting portions of the City’s water system.

The City’s drinking water is treated through our ultra-filtration facility and continues to meet or exceed all state and federal regulatory requirements for safe drinking water.

We believe the issue is related to seasonal changes in one of our water sources, an open reservoir. Recent high temperatures, low precipitation, and ongoing drought conditions have likely contributed to these changes, making the taste and odor more noticeable throughout the system.

To help address the issue, additives will be applied to the raw water as part of the treatment process, and the City will bring our secondary water source, the Snake Pond Well, online to supplement the system with approximately 1 million gallons of water per day.

We are hopeful these measures will improve the taste and odor of the water in the coming days. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issue.

Asbestos at Waterford (7/23/2026)

Asbestos Issues at Waterford – The Analysis and the Solution

The Gardner Finance Committee Packet for the the meeting of July 24, 2026 contains a DEP Inspection Report, CLICK HERE. The report details where asbestos was found at the Waterford Community Center. Gardner Mayor Nicholson is asking for the City Council to utilize some of the $8 million bond proceeds to fund necessary asbestos abatement and other repairs. View complete packet, CLICK HERE.

The DEP Inspection Report (Link to PDF is above), details the results of asbestos testing conducted at 70 Waterford Street in Gardner. Various building components are examined including floor tiles, mastic, and ceiling tiles to identify the presence of hazardous materials. The graphics presented in this article provide detail on what was found including items testing positive for Chrysotile and Anthophyllite. Asbestos was detected in nine of 20 samples analyzed via Polarized Light Microscopy. Notable findings include White Cementitious Ceiling Tile containing 10% Chrysotile and various Black Mastic and Floor Tile samples containing between 2% and 7% asbestos (Chrysotile and Anthophyllite).

Once properly abated which the Mayor’s request outlines, there would be no danger to persons utilizing the building.

Editiorial: Gardner Mayor Nicholson and Revere Mayor Keefe on Student Transportation Costs

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION IS one of the biggest expenses in municipal budgets, and it’s growing every year, putting incredible strain on the ability to manage our cities’ finances. One cost that is proving particularly challenging to control is the legally mandated transportation services we provide to our most vulnerable students.

State lawmakers are considering a proposal that could provide tremendous relief to communities struggling with these expenses, while still ensuring that we meet our transportation responsibilities to these students. They should seize this opportunity.

Students who have special needs or are homeless often travel much farther and longer to get to school, and they require special transportation to ensure they receive the education to which they are entitled. For special needs students, it is traveling to schools dedicated to addressing their needs. For homeless students, it is bringing them to the school they attended before their dislocation led them to relocate to another community. Fulfilling this commitment requires an army of dedicated transportation specialists who work hard with these families to make sure every child gets to school safely every day.

Transportation of both homeless and special education students has grown exponentially in scope and cost. Massachusetts has one of the highest rates of students with disabilities in the country at nearly 20 percent of public school students. Meanwhile, the number of students experiencing homelessness in the state has grown 34 percent since the 2022-23 school year.

According to a report released earlier this year by Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro, there is little competition in Massachusetts school districts for transportation contracts. The IG was mandated by the Legislature to examine how Massachusetts special education transportation services are procured and delivered to determine why costs were increasing.

One of the most stunning findings was that 53 percent of Massachusetts school districts received no bid or only one bid for these transportation contracts. When no-bid or one-bid contracts are the rule, not the exception, it is clear what the problem is.

There is now a chance to change it.

A proposed amendment to the Senate’s economic development bond bill would strengthen safety and choice by updating requirements for signage, seatbelts, special bus lights affixed to vehicles, and school transportation license plates – allowing more vehicles, such as passenger vehicles and vans, to be used as school transportation alternatives. These simple updates will increase competition, bolster the number of drivers, and decrease cost – addressing several factors raised by the inspector general’s report and raised repeatedly over the last two decades without any action. The changes mirror the language of legislation introduced by Rep, Jeff Roy (H. 3772) and Sen. Brendan Crighton (S.3021) to address the issue.

Currently, no transportation options are available to districts other than traditional school buses with mandated permanent signage and special license plates. Allowing companies to expand their fleet flexibility would both save money and safely serve the most at-risk students.

Massachusetts is an outlier in how it provides transportation to special needs and homeless students. Forty-one states provide alternative transportation to these students through a system that is highly regulated – including requiring new, safe passenger vehicles and thoroughly vetted drivers who are subjected to routine drug-testing. But not Massachusetts.

This situation has existed for years with no effort to change it. Every city and town is confronting astronomical cost increases in these services, compounded by the recent spike in fuel prices. Cost cutting, layoffs, and property tax overrides have become necessary to contend with budget shortfalls.

The inspector general’s report cited several factors that drive costs, including a persistent shortage of qualified drivers, lack of vendor competition, cost transparency, and vehicle requirements. It will take a comprehensive effort to address all the challenges, but one important step would be passing this simple legislation to change a system mired in the past and stymied by too little competition and transparency.

K-9 Blitz 7-21-26 (7/22/2026)

Winchendon K-9 Officer Blitz Successfully Tracks Suspect

From the Winchendon Police Department; “K-9 Blitz Locates Domestic Violence Suspect. At approximately 10:38 p.m. on Tuesday July 21, 2026, Winchendon Dispatch received a 911 call requesting police response for a domestic disturbance. While officers were en route, dispatch advised officers that the suspect had fled the residence. Following the initial investigation, officers determined that the suspect might have been in possession of a knife. A scent article was obtained, and K-9 Blitz began tracking the suspect. After a brief track, K-9 Blitz located the suspect hiding underneath a nearby utility trailer. The suspect surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.”

K-9 Blitz is a Belgian Malinois and active K-9 officer for the Winchendon Police Department handled by Officer Jim Wironen. Trained in criminal apprehension, narcotics detection, and tracking, Blitz is fully funded by donations. In this case, K-9 Blitz’s tracking skills came in very handy. K-9 Blitz is now 5 years old.

Haz-Mat – Winchendon (7/22/2026)

Homeowner Discovery Leads to Haz-Mat Investigation in Winchendon MA

Winchendon Fire Department – Haz-Mat Investigation – Press Release 7-22-26

WINCHENDON, MA — At approximately 9:00 a.m. on July 21, the Winchendon Fire Department responded to 25 Northern Heights Drive at the request of the homeowner to investigate a propane cylinder that had been discovered while cleaning the property. The homeowners advised firefighters they had recently purchased the residence and located the cylinder on the property. During the initial assessment, firefighters observed damage to the valve area of the cylinder and consulted with Eastern Propane regarding its safe disposal. Eastern Propane accepted custody of the cylinder for safe evaluation and disposal at the request of the Winchendon Fire Department.

At approximately 10:51 a.m., the Winchendon Fire Department was contacted by Eastern Propane after technicians discovered the cylinder did not contain propane. Captain Marty Scott responded to Eastern Propane to speak with their technician. Upon hearing their concerns, Captain Marty Scott immediately requested the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Team to activate a Tier 1 response to investigate the unknown contents. Initial field testing by the Hazmat Team indicated the possible presence of a hazardous substance, prompting the incident to be escalated to a Tier 2 response bringing additional specialized resources to the scene at 600 School Street.

As the investigation progressed, information obtained during the response led investigators to respond back to 25 Northern Heights to inspect other items discovered during the property’s cleanup. The coordinated response ultimately involved the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Team, Winchendon Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security and the National Guard CST Team.

Following extensive laboratory analysis and investigation, officials determined the contents of the cylinder were not sulfur mustard gas or any other chemical warfare agent. All locations were determined to be safe, and the incident concluded without injuries to residents or emergency responders at 20:29.

“This incident demonstrates the importance of treating any unknown substance with extreme caution,” said Fire Chief Thomas Smith. “Our firefighters, together with our local, state, and federal partners, followed established hazardous materials protocols from the outset. While the investigation required significant resources, every action was taken to protect the public until the material could be positively identified.”

The Winchendon Fire Department reminds residents that if they discover unknown containers, chemicals, or suspicious materials on their property, they should not attempt to move or dispose of them. Instead, contact the fire department so trained personnel can safely evaluate the situation.

Gardner Junior Police Academy 2026 (7/18/2026)

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson commented: “Congratulations to all of the graduate’s of this year’s newly renamed Rock Barrieau Junior Police Academy at the Gardner Police Department. With its largest class yet at 27 cadets, these students had a great week and learned a lot about how our local police department operates. Thank you for Officer Ryan Spain and everyone involved in running this program every year!”

The Junior Police Academy is an educational week long program open to students 13 to 17 years old, that have an interest in learning about law enforcement. The academy teaches cadets about the methods and techniques used in the profession through a para-military setting that will include, classroom training, hands on instruction, practical application and physical fitness training. Cadets gain an understanding of community responsibility and problem solving.

This yearly program is FREE to participants with costs covered by sponsors of the program. The Gardner PD has an application period which it announces every year.

Gardner PD Rock Barrieau Junior Police Academy Graduates 27 in July 2026

27 teenage cadets graduated from the Gardner PD Rock Barrieau Junior Police Academy – the largest class yet. Day 1: Day 1 of the Rock Barrieau Junior Police Academy is in the books. The Cadets were welcomed by our enthusiastic staff instructors. They then learned some lifesaving skills towards their CPR certification, went for a casual workout at @fitness_concepts with a group Murph challenge, and learned the about defensive tactics. Looking forward to another exciting day with our cadets tomorrow!

Day 2: Day 2 of the Academy was another action-packed day!Cadets continued CPR training, pushed themselves during PT, explored crime scene investigations, and learned the fundamentals of motor vehicle stops.Our Academy Squad Leaders put their ability to give clear directions to the test during a drawing challenge. Let’s just say…they are all refrigerator worthy.Another great day of learning, leadership, and teamwork!

Day 3: HAPPY HUMP DAY Day 3 of the Rock Barrieau J.P.A. is complete. The cadets had the opportunity to meet some community members from the Heywood Wakefield Commons, playing board games and serving ice cream to the residents. The cadets also assisted with building a garden bed for their outdoor space. This was a sweet ending to the cadets’ day, as they spent today learning about drug investigations, the risks of impaired driving, and also had a presentation on healthy relationships from the GPD Domestic Violence Advocate.

Day 4: Today’s culminating scenario gave cadets the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned all week as they responded to a simulated impaired driving crash. The day wrapped up with a lesson on firearm safety followed by our Top Shot competition. A special thank you to Fitness Concepts Health Club and TimberFire Pizza for their 7 years of unwavering support for our Junior Police Academy. Your continued partnership has helped make this program a success year after year, and we are incredibly grateful. 1 more day to go!

Day 5: Day 5 of the Rock Barrieau Junior Academy! The final day before graduation was one to remember! Cadets tested their piloting skills by navigating toy drones through an obstacle course with guidance from our Drone Unit, put their teamwork to the test during Nerf Breach Games, visited the Gardner District Court, and wrapped up the academy with K9 Rocky and Officer Willis. A special thanks to Maki Building Centers for their donation of materials to build sets for our cadets. What an incredible week of learning, leadership, and teamwork. We can’t wait to celebrate our cadets at graduation!

Air Quality Update 7-18-26 (7/17/2026)

Greater Gardner MA Air Quality Projected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Category on Saturday July 18^th with a projected reading of about 130. Some sections of Connecticut and New York State are projected to be in the Unhealthy Category with readings above 150. The Western New York Region was in the highest Very Unhealthy category on Friday July 17^th.

Conditions are expected to improve by Sunday July 19th to the Moderate Category in all of Massachusetts. Further information for Monday is not yet available.

Wampanoag Brush Fire (7/17/2026)

Firefighters Put Out Quarter Acre Brush Fire on Island in Lake Wampanoag – Twice

From the Gardner Fire Department: “Yesterday evening firefighters responded to a reported brush on an island at Lake Wampanoag. Firefighters extinguished an approximate quarter acre brush Fire on one of the islands. Gardner firefighters received mutual aid from Ashburnham in Westminster, who both responded with manpower and boats. Firefighters were also assisted by two civilian boats.

This morning, along with crews from Ashburnham Fire returned to Lake Wampanoag for rekindle of yesterday’s brushfire. Due to the ongoing drought conditions in the woods are extremely dry and fires are burning deep into the ground.

When in the woods, especially on an island where emergency resources may be limited, always use extreme caution with campfires, never leave a fire unattended, and be careful with smoking materials. Completely extinguish all fires with water until the ashes are cool to the touch, and follow any local fire restrictions to help protect the forests. “ The Ashburnham Fire Department took the photos.

Mount Wachusett Community College Celebrates Two Members of Community Recognized by Central Mass EMS

John Bresnahan, MPA, NRP, I/C, Paramedic Program Clinical Coordinator was named Central Mass EMS Educator of the Year, while Officer Caleb Matson (US Army ret.), a graduate of MWCC’s Criminal Justice program and now a Templeton Police Officer, received the First Responder of the Year Award.

The EMS Educator of the Year Award recognizes outstanding contributions to paramedicine education and honors educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching, mentorship, and professional leadership.

“John has been vital to MWCC in the development and launch of our Associate Degree in Paramedicine program,” noted Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences Kim Shea. “This recognition reflects his dedication, professionalism, and lasting impact on education and student success.”

Adding to the celebration, Matson was honored as First Responder of the Year for his fast-acting, life-saving response at the scene of a motorcycle crash involving severe traumatic injuries to the driver. His quick assessment, decisive actions, and emergency care helped stabilize the victim during a critical situation.

A graduate of MWCC’s Criminal Justice program, Matson exemplifies the dedication to public service fostered at the college. The son of Kathy Matson, MWCC’s Director of Student Life, he has built a career centered on protecting and serving his community. His recognition reflects the professionalism, courage, and commitment demonstrated by MWCC graduates working throughout the region.

“These honors reflect the extraordinary dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service that define the Mount Wachusett Community College community,” said MWCC President James Vander Hooven. “John Bresnahan’s leadership in paramedicine education is helping prepare the next generation of paramedics, while Officer Matson’s life-saving actions demonstrate the profound impact our alumni have in the communities they serve. Tampering Case (7/7/2026)

Unusual Opioid Tampering Case Implicates Gardner MA Man

According to the United States Attorney’s office, 37 year old Andrew Milgrim of Gardner agreed to plead guilty to one count of tampering with a consumer product. Milgrim will make his initial appearance, waive indictment and plead to the Information at a date to be set by U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman.

According to court filings, beginning in or about September 2024 and continuing through in or about February 2025, Milgrim allegedly diverted Oxycodone from patients in the skilled nursing and dementia care units of the Fitchburg healthcare facility. It is alleged that he began by taking Oxycodone pills that were prescribed to be dispensed to certain patients “as needed.” Rather than provide the “as needed” doses to patients, Milgrim would allegedly consume the pills himself. Milgrim began taking 5 mg Oxycodone pills from various patients and replacing the diverted pills with Loratadine, an allergy medication, whose appearance resembled the appearance of the 5 mg Oxycodone pills. In or around January 2025, Milgrim also allegedly diverted 10 mg Oxycodone pills from an elderly patient in the locked unit, and replaced those pills with Levothyroxine, a thyroid medication.

Following repairs which delayed the opening of the pool by over 10 days, The Greenwood Outdoor Memorial Pool in Gardner, MA, has officially commenced its seasonal operations, providing community access seven days a week. Vision Zero Safety Interview 7-6-26

The City of Gardner has initiated a comprehensive Safety Action Plan, often referred to as a “Vision Zero” plan, aimed at eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on its roadways.

Supported by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Safe Streets and Roads for All” (SS4A) program, the initiative is a 12-month project that transitions from data analysis to long-term implementation.

Analysis reveals that Gardner faces significant safety challenges, with fatality rates exceeding both regional and state averages. The plan utilizes a “Safe Systems Approach,” which acknowledges that human error is inevitable and seeks to minimize the severity of crashes through a combination of roadway engineering, law enforcement, and public education. Key deliverables include the identification of a High Injury Network (HIN) and the recommendation of “proven countermeasures” to be funded through state and federal sources over the coming decades.

Pavement Width: Many one-way and residential streets are excessively wide (20 to 25 feet), which can inadvertently encourage higher speeds.
Sight Distance Obstructions: Issues with visibility at side streets entering main roads, often exacerbated by overgrown vegetation or hedges on private property.

Behavioral factors remain a significant concern in fatal and serious injury incidents:

Distraction and Inattention: Approximately 9% of fatal crashes involve inattention or failure to yield.
Speeding: Speed is cited as the most significant factor in the severity of injuries. A pedestrian hit at 20 mph likely survives, while the opposite is true at 40 mph.
Impairment: While data on marijuana and alcohol impairment is tracked, current recorded numbers may be lower than reality due to reporting complexities.
Lack of Courtesy: Observations suggest a decline in “common courtesy” and adherence to basic rules, such as right-of-way at four-way stops.

Fire at Templeton Auto Auction Site (7/2/2026)

Fire Destroys about 60 Vehicles in Templeton MA

Multiple Fire Departments responded to an early morning fire Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 223 Baldwinville Road in Templeton, the location of Insurance Auto Auctions. 911 callers had reported hearing explosions around 2am. Fire crews found approximately 12 vehicles engulfed in flames upon arrival. According to the Gardner Fire Department, the incident escalated to three alarms, ultimately resulting in 60 vehicles being destroyed.

No injuries have been reported. According to the company website, there was an auction scheduled for 8:30am this morning. Cause of fire is unknown at this time.

UPDATE: July 3 2026 – Templeton Fire Department Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 3, 2026

Templeton Fire Department Responds to Large Vehicle Fire on Baldwinville Road – At approximately 2:06 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, the Templeton Fire Department was dispatched to 223 Baldwinville Road following reports of a large column of smoke. Upon arrival, the first-due engine company and Fire Chief David Dickie found a significant fire involving more than 15 vehicles. Due to the limited on-site water supply and the immediate threat of the fire spreading to additional vehicles, a second alarm was requested. As the incident continued to escalate, a third alarm was struck to provide additional firefighting personnel. Mutual aid departments worked together to establish a reliable water supply, requiring the deployment of more than 2,000 feet of large-diameter supply hose. Once a sustained water supply was established, crews continued suppression operations and successfully brought the fire under control. In total, 57 vehicles sustained fire damage during the incident. No firefighter injuries were reported. The Templeton Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to our mutual aid partners from the Barre, Gardner, Phillipston, Hubbardston, Westminster, and Winchendon Fire Departments for their rapid response and assistance. We also thank the Templeton Communications Center (Dispatch) and the Templeton Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for their invaluable support throughout the incident. The Templeton Fire Department is grateful for the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved. Their teamwork, professionalism, and commitment were instrumental in the successful management of this challenging incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No additional information is being released at this time, and no further statements will be made while the investigation is ongoing.

Buddhist Center Fire (7/1/2026)

Fire Heavily Damages Gardner MA Buddhist Center

A fire at the Buddhist Center at 20 Lakewood Terrace in Gardner on June 30, 2026 caused extensive damage and the occupants are not able to return to the building. Gardner Magazine received this information from Gardner Fire Chief Greg Lagoy: “The fire yesterday caused extensive damage to the building, leaving it uninhabitable. There were 4 occupants displaced who are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The call was received at 10:41am. A second alarm was struck on arrival due to the heavy fire conditions, with additional mutual aid requested due to the high temperatures and humidity that required firefighters to limit their work time and rotate often, rehabilitating and rehydrating in between. All off-duty Gardner firefighters were recalled to duty, and mutual aid was received from Westminster, Winchendon, Ashburnham, Hubbardston, Templeton, Fitchburg and Leominster at the scene. The Gardner Fire Station was covered by Rutland, Sterling, Athol, and Orange.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but is believed to be accidental. The investigation was conducted by the MA Fire District 8 Fire Investigation Unit and State Troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.”

Attack on WGAW (6/14/2026)

WGAW Attacked by Domestic Terrorists

Radio Station WGAW has faced another attack of domestic terrorism. While the AM remained on the air, the FM signal was off the air for the past couple of weeks due to an act of Domestic Urban Terrorists who used wire cutters to cut AUDIO feed lines from the WGAW studios to the transmitter. Urgent Weather Message – Heat Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect until 8pm on Friday June 12, 2026 with Heat Index values up to 96 in portions of Central, Eastern, Northeastern, and Southeastern Massachusetts and Northern Rhode Island.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Note that the Levi-Heywood Memorial Library is air-conditioned and will be open Friday from 9am to 3pm. If you decide to shop, many of the area stores are air-conditioned. The World of Sully – Gardner’s Fire Department Therapy Dog Hangs Out with K-9 Rocky

The Gardner Fire Department posted regarding Saturday June 6th: “So we caught up with Sully today as he had a busy day of visits throughout the City. His First stop was with the Members of Gardner Fire Group 4. Then it was on to Gardner’s 911 dispatch center to visit with our awesome 911 Dispatchers. Sully’s final stop was at the Gardner Elks Kids Safety Day where he and his buddy, Gardner Police K9 Rocky, hung out and mingled with the crowds.”

Sully’s handler Fire Lieutenant Eric Hulette messaged: “Gardners two K9’s hang out together at the Elks Kids Safety day. They both get a long very well together!!”

Publisher’s Observation: Both Sully and Rocky are “good catchers”. Sully catches hearts with his warmth and love. K-9 Rocky catches crooks, finds drugs, and locates people. Both dogs are part of the City of Gardner family.

Sully joined the Gardner Fire Department in 2023. Rocky joined the Gardner Police Department in 2022 and is noted for catching a crook his first day on the job.

The program also highlighted the future of the Gardner Fire Department by recognizing student interns and awarding the inaugural Reverend David Cody Memorial Scholarship. Black bear populations are steadily growing across New England, resulting in a surge of residential sightings. Driven by suburban development and warmer spring weather, bears—especially young ones seeking independence—are regularly wandering into backyards and urban centers, such as recent high-profile sightings in the Greater Gardner MA area and even the City of Worcester.

The jarring reality for New Englanders is that the “wilderness” is no longer a destination we visit in the Berkshires or the North Woods; the wilderness has moved in next door. As bear populations surge and human developments sprawl, we are witnessing a profound biological boundary dissolution. Correction Officer at NCCI, Gardner Passes Away on the Job

According to the Department of Correction, Officer John Edwards passed away during his shift early on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The veteran officer suffered some sort of medical event which resulted in his death.

Statement from the Massachusetts Department of Correction: It is with profound sadness that the Massachusetts Department of Correction announces the sudden line-of-duty death of Correction Officer John Edwards, a 28-year veteran of the Department assigned to North Central Correctional Institution in Gardner. This morning, Officer Edwards suffered a medical emergency at his post and passed away. Commissioner Shawn Jenkins issued the following statement in tribute to the fallen officer: “Today, we mourn the loss of Correction Officer John Edwards, who served the Department of Correction for nearly three decades with unwavering dedication to our public safety mission. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and offer them our full support in the difficult days ahead. His service will never be forgotten.”

Here’s some local examples of safety initiatives: In the City of Gardner, the Gardner Fire Department has increased safety through its proactive education efforts directed at people of every age. The Gardner Police Department has a full-time Domestic Violence Advocate to increase safety in relationships and families. The Gardner PD also maintains a FREE disposal service in the lobby for old medications, so for example, kids can’t get access to opioids you are no longer using. Through various initiatives, the crime rate in Gardner has fallen by almost half in the last 5 years.

Maintain contact, status and location of police, fire and EMS units. Monitor direct emergency alarms. Enter, update and retrieve information form a variety of computer systems. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, computer systems, closed circuit camera systems and alarm monitoring equipment. Performs cell watches for individuals in custody per Police Department regulations.

Qualifications: • Preferred certifications in EMD, CPR, NextGen 911, APCO PST 1, CJIS. An unusual Federal Bust has nabbed18 Defendants on various charges in conjunction with an alleged drug trafficking and money laundering scheme including 9 from North Central MA. According to the Press Release, the scheme was coordinated by a man in Gardner. See Press Release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Gardner is a landscape of brick facades and quiet residential streets that suggest a slow, predictable rhythm of life. But according to federal investigators, that mask hid a sophisticated multi-state narcotics engine. On May 18, 2026, the Department of Justice shattered this image of small-town peace with the announcement of a massive takedown: 18 individuals arrested across seven states, all linked to a narcotics trafficking and money laundering syndicate. This was not a street-corner operation; it was a sprawling criminal enterprise that allegedly utilized a local trade business to bridge the gap between small-town North Worcester County and the distant shores of Hawaii.

The Unlikely Hub: Why Gardner, Massachusetts?

In the world of high-stakes drug trafficking, major urban ports and border cities are the expected nodes of power. Yet, federal authorities allege that the “nerve center” of this conspiracy was nestled in the heart of Gardner. At the center of the indictment stands Hai Son Pham, a 39-year-old Gardner resident who allegedly directed a network that metastasized across the country.

The reach of this organization was counter-intuitive, proving that in the digital and logistics-heavy modern era, a kingpin can operate from a quiet suburb as easily as a skyscraper. According to the charging documents, the network managed logistics and distribution across eight different states: “Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida, Oklahoma, California, Texas, Washington and Hawaii.” By centering operations in North Worcester County, the organization likely sought to exploit the lower profile of a small community, effectively “hiding in plain sight” away from the high-intensity federal task forces that saturate major metropolitan hubs.

To the neighbors, it was likely just another local service provider—a commercial and residential painting company. But federal investigators allege that Infinite Painting, a business registered and controlled by Hai Son Pham, served a far more cynical purpose. The company is accused of being the primary vehicle for laundering drug proceeds through multiple financial institutions.

In the analytical view of a financial crimes investigator, a painting company is a brilliant, albeit “boring,” choice for a front. These businesses are cash-intensive, have fluctuating material costs, and utilize a rotating labor force—variables that provide the perfect cover for blending illicit drug profits with legitimate revenue. This was not a simple “cash-under-the-mattress” scheme; it was a calculated attempt to exploit the banking system’s compliance thresholds by masking the origin of millions of dollars in narcotics transactions.

Diverse Inventory: From Cocaine to Counterfeit Pills

The scale of the “inventory” allegedly moved by the Pham organization suggests a high-volume pipeline capable of supplying diverse markets across the country. The Department of Justice alleges the conspiracy was responsible for distributing “large quantities” of substances that reflect both traditional demands and modern synthetic threats.

The identified substances include: Cocaine, Marijuana, Counterfeit pills, and other controlled substances. The presence of counterfeit pills is particularly telling. In today’s illicit market, these pills are often the delivery mechanism for high-potency synthetic opioids, signaling that the Gardner-based organization was tapped into the most dangerous and profitable sectors of the national drug trade.

The investigation was a masterclass in jurisdictional cooperation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the IRS Criminal Investigation unit, and the DEA. The sheer complexity of the takedown was illustrated by the involvement of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Massachusetts State Police, and a coalition of over 15 local police departments—including Worcester, Gardner, Leominster, Fitchburg, Clinton, Lunenburg, Hopkinton, Westminster, Ashburnham, Winchendon, Templeton, Phillipston, Boylston, Sterling, and Weymouth.

Equipment & Modernization: There is a strong emphasis on transitioning to PFAS-free protective gear for firefighters and a request from the Police Department to shift cruiser replacements from sporadic “free cash” funding to a predictable annual budget item.
Environmental Liability: A high-priority request of approximately $250,000 was made to address erosion at the capped landfill to prevent accruing daily fines from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson provided an overview of the preliminary FY27 budget process. Key financial principles guiding the current cycle include:
- Level Funding for Open Contracts: Departments with active collective bargaining negotiations are level-funded for those specific line items. Appropriations will be adjusted once contracts are signed.
- Professional Development Uniformity: The city is working toward a consistent system across all departments for professional development and travel line items to ensure equity and oversight.
- Three-Tier Submission: Department heads were required to submit three scenarios:
  1. Wish List: Funding required for optimum efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. 3% Non-Salary Reduction: Potential cuts to operating expenses.
  3. Department Request: A level-funded budget necessary to maintain current FY26 operations.
Fire Department and EMS Analysis: The Fire Department’s submission emphasized a shift toward proactive staffing and the remediation of hazardous facility conditions.
- New Floater Position: The Mayor and Fire Chief Greg Lagoy proposed funding a “group floater” (private-level firefighter). Historical data from a 2013-2014 study suggests this position pays for itself by reducing the need for overtime to cover sick leave and vacancies.
- EMS Coordinator: Currently a “collateral job” stipend position, the Chief and Mayor agree this should eventually become a full-time role to manage reporting requirements. However, the Mayor is deferring this change until the next ambulance contract is finalized to ensure revenue stability.
- Overtime Realities: The department requested $400,000 for overtime, which is considered the minimum required to backfill short-term leave, assuming no long-term vacancies or injuries occur.
- PFAS Remediation: The department has successfully disposed of PFAS-containing foam. New turnout gear orders are now “PFAS-free” to reduce carcinogen exposure, though this adds approximately $600 in cost per set.
- Apparatus Maintenance: Repair costs are rising due to increased labor rates and parts costs for aging vehicles.
- The 50-year-old fire headquarters was identified as inadequate in several areas.
- Contamination Risks: Lack of dedicated decontamination zones forces firefighters to store gear in living quarters, increasing the risk of cross-contamination.
- Gender Inclusivity: The facility lacks adequate private bathroom and shower facilities for female employees, with only one shared multi-bay bathroom on the second floor.
- Capacity: The department still utilizes the deteriorating South Gardner station for storage because the main headquarters cannot house all apparatus and trailers.
Police Department: The Police Department’s budget focus remains on addressing a long-term staffing deficit and modernizing fleet management.
- Staffing Levels: The department is currently budgeted for 33 officers. Police Chief Eric McAvene noted that FBI recommendations suggest the city should have in the mid-40s. A “wish list” request for seven additional officers was made to reach a total of 40.
- Domestic Violence Advocate: This position is funded by a year-to-year grant. The Chief highlighted its criticality, noting that the advocate has a 75% engagement rate with victims, a level of follow-up that uniformed officers cannot provide.
- Recruitment: The department has seen a recent uptick in highly qualified and diverse applicants for open academy slots.
- Aging Fleet: The department is operating cruisers from 2018 and 2019 that run 24/7.
- Funding Shift: The Chief requested that cruiser replacements (averaging 80,000–90,000 per outfitted vehicle) be moved to a recurring budget line item rather than relying on irregular “free cash” appropriations.
- Assessment Centers: Since moving out of Civil Service, the department utilizes assessment centers for promotions to ensure a fair, “double-blind” process, costing approximately $6,500 per group.
Building Department Modernization
- Structural Separation: A long-term goal is to separate the Building Department from Public Building Maintenance to improve operational focus.
- Technology Upgrades: The department is pushing for field technology (tablets) and online systems for the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to reduce paper costs and streamline resident interactions.
- Fee Structure: Building Commissioner Melissa MacDonald noted that current permitting fees do not adequately cover inspectional and administrative costs, suggesting a future proposal for fee adjustments.
Health Department and Solid Waste
- Transfer Station Degradation: Health Director Lauren Saunders described the current scale house as “decomposing” and rodent-infested. A request for $50,000 was made to replace dilapidated sheds with a single container-office to provide basic climate control and hygiene for staff.

The City of Gardner announced that National Grid will be closing the right-of-way and the rail trail located within it beginning Monday, May 18, 2026. The public is advised to avoid the Heywood Brook and Rail Trail, beginning at Green Street and continuing through Park Street to the Crystal Lake Substation, for the duration of the closure. The closure is expected to remain in effect through Spring 2027. Additional information about the work being performed and updates on the closure timeline will be shared as it becomes available.

Upcoming work beginning May 18, 2026:

Mowing: Vegetation management crews will be working within the National Grid right-of-way using large equipment to clear vegetation in preparation for surveying. Surveying: Survey crews will place stakes along the right-of-way.

Sicko Teens Throw Spikes (5/12/2026)

SICKO Teens Throw Railroad Spike, Almost Killing Driver, But Get Away

A pair of Sicko Teens on e-bikes were apparently throwing railroad spikes from the side of the road on Route 2 last week in Gardner MA. One railroad spike went through the windshield of a vehicle, almost killing the driver, who is from Royalston. The incident is under investigation by Gardner Police and State Police. Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of these criminal individuals are urged to call local or State Police. Someone could have been killed. According to various reports, the teens are known troublemakers who ride their e-bikes in the area.

The teens fled from the scene of the crime prior to police arrival. The driver was quoted as saying: “I look behind me and there are these two kids about 80 feet behind me, behind the guard rail, and they were still throwing stuff around. So I knew instantly it was them,” The victim was covered in glass but had no major injuries.

The driver told WBZ-TV that he has a message for the two teens: “Stop. You’re going to get someone killed. It’s not worth getting in trouble. If my son or my wife were in the vehicle, things could have been a lot worse,”

The newest member of the Gardner Police Department is Officer Derek Wright. Both Gardner Police Chief Eric McAvene, Deputy Chief Nicholaus Maroni, and other officers were on hand for the swearing in which took place at Gardner City Hall. The oath of office was administered by City Clerk Titi Siriphan. Gardner Mayor Nicholson posted photos and stated: “Congratulations to Officer Derek Wight on being sworn in as the newest member of the Gardner Police Department!”
Gardner Graham St. Fire (5/6/2026)

Fire Crews Spent Just Under 5 Hours at Graham Street Fire

A fire shortly after noontime on May 5, 2026 caused considerable damage to a building at 45 Graham Street in Gardner. According to the Gardner Fire Department, “Crews arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor, extending to the third and attic. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to knock down the fire in the upper stories. Flying embers started a small fire between two garages on Vernon St. that was quickly handled. Cover companies responded to several calls , including a small brush fire at Pearly Brook Reservoir. All companies cleared the scene at 17:12 hours.”

Mutual aid to the scene: Ashburnham, Hubbardston, Templeton, Westminster, Winchendon, Athol, Fitchburg and Leominster. Devens, Rutland and Sterling covered Gardner HQ.

All building occupants made it out safely without injury. However, 2 pet cats were not located. Cause of fire is under investigation and was not immediately determined.

Hubbardston Sofa Caper Solved – Suspects Summoned to Court

On April 8th, Hubbardston Police reported that the furniture shown in the graphic was illegally dumped in the area of Old Princeton Road and Worcester road that afternoon. The photo of the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident was posted by the Hubbardston PD the following day.

Two weeks later, Hubbardston Police has stated that “after a thorough investigation, Sergeant Donald Blood was able to identify the two individuals responsible for dumping the sectional sofa just off Worcester Rd. in Hubbardston.” A 25 year old man and a 26 year old man, both from Lawrence, MA have been summoned to Gardner District Court for the alleged illegal dumping. According to the Hubbardston PD, the men were identified by the owner of the company they were working for.

Good news: Another company has stepped up and donated its time and resources to clean up and properly dispose of the sectional at no cost to the town of Hubbardston. “The Hubbardston Police Department would like to sincerely thank R.M.G. Services for cleaning up and properly disposing of the debris from the illegal dumping on 4/08/2026 on their own time and at their expense.”

The WGAW Hotline Radio program on April 25, 2026 started off with an ominous story by Steve Wendell of an Urban Terrorist Attack on the radio station which took down the FM portion of the station for the better part of 3 days last week. Culprits are being sought by the FBI and the Gardner PD for a very serious Federal offense and a $20,000 reward is offered. Penalty upon conviction is 10 years in prison, 5 years Probation, $250,000 in fines, and restitution to the radio station. Gardner PD is analyzing forensic evidence found at the site.

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson spoke about potholes in the City with the Pothole Patrol being out this week filling potholes. The Mayor spoke on the various phases of the Rear Main Street Project with the current phase including parking and an events plaza with housing coming next. Officer of the Year Announced at Gardner PD Awards Banquet

On Friday, April 10, 2026 the Gardner Police Department held its 2025 Officer of the Year Awards Banquet. The Officer of the Year is awarded to a department member who is outstanding in their commitment, dedication, and service to public safety and the Gardner community.

School Resource Officer Ryan Spain was proudly awarded this title for his impact on Gardner Public Schools and numerous community engagement programs that connect the department with the community it serves.

The banquet is held each year to honor the legacy of late Gardner officers Lieutenant Kenneth Arsenault and Officer Ronald Hough, after whom the award is in memory of. Also honored was Ronald’s daughter, the late Heather Newton, a dedicated dispatcher with GPD for 17 years.

In addition to Officer of the Year, this event recognized members of the department who achieved 5,10 and 15 years of service. Current and retired officers and their families gathered to celebrate the dedication to service by officers and the loved ones who support them.

Gardner Fire Department Provides Mutual Aid to Hubbardston Brush Fire – Highlights High Fire Risk

Gardner’s Truck 5, Truck 10, and C1 responded to the Town of Hubbardston on Saturday, April 11, 2026. The firefighters were there to put out a brush fire. GFD posted: “Please use extreme caution when burning outdoors.”

As of early April 2026, the fire danger level in Greater Gardner and Worcester County is high, driven by an “elevated wildfire risk” from an extended dry spell, lack of significant spring rain, and dry, accumulated vegetation.

Burn Restrictions: The annual open burning season in Massachusetts runs from January 15th to May 1st, but local fire departments often pause burning due to high fire danger. You must call the Gardner Fire Department to check if permits are activated for the day and to ensure burning is allowed.

Dry Weather Alert: While some drought conditions in Worcester County improved in early April, the area saw one of its driest Februarys on record, creating a persistent, high-risk situation.

Precaution: Any spark can trigger rapid spread of fire, so caution is advised when using machinery, cooking, or disposing of smoking materials.

Vision Zero Action Committee Developing Comprehensive Roadway Safety Plan.

The Vision Zero Action Committee for the City of Gardner had its first meeting on March 31, 2026.

The goal is to develop a comprehensive roadway safety plan. City officials and consultants from Kimley Horn discuss a federal grant-funded initiative to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries through a proactive, data-driven approach. Here are some of the stats from the period January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2025 highlighted during the meeting: There were a total of 44 collisions with a pedestrian of which 4 resulted in a fatality, and 7 resulted in serious injury. Vision Zero 3-31-26

The discussion highlights existing crash data, identifying high-injury networks and specific danger zones for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the city. Committee members emphasize the importance of public engagement, promoting an interactive mapping tool where residents can report safety concerns and suggest improvements. The project timeline spans 10 to 12 months, incorporating multiple public forums and interdepartmental collaboration to foster safer road user behavior and infrastructure. This outlines a strategic transition from reactive traffic management to a preventative safety system focused on protecting all community members with a completion projection of the final report in the October to December 2026 period. Once the final report is adopted, funding will be sought and the plan will then be implemented in an effort to save lives.

Gardner Community Youth Center Success Focus of Public Welfare Committee Meeting

Director Hughey’s good news drew broad smiles from the Mayor and Councilor Brooks while Councilors Cormier and Hardern contained their excitement. Big news is that funding has been secured for a second year due to State Representative Jonathan Zlotnik securing a commitment from the state. Jen Woods and Wood Ambulance have provided flexible transportation for students and the bill was covered by Jonathan Zlotnik. Active membership has been growing from 65 registered members in January to 81 in February and an additional increase is expected in the March numbers. Unique visitors in January were 35 and 46 in February.

Director Brandon Hughey said the center discovered that structured programs were not the primary draw for local teens. Instead, the presence of community partners and the variety they bring proved more effective for enrichment. This included the Levi Heywood Memorial Library with a mobile library service twice a month, LUK providing daily programming during the February school vacation, focusing on art and “inclusiveness” skills to help students improve social interactions, the Gardner Police Department’s frequent visits to build report and assist with operations, and various community service organizations.

Airport Commission Chair Widely Criticized at April 1st Meeting.

Gardner Massachusetts has a full-time Airport Manager in Isabelle Davis and Airport Commission members heavily criticized Airport Commission Chair James Woods for what they felt was not staying in his lane. Listen to the entire meeting on any device, CLICK PLAY.

Woods was criticized by a number of members for holding independent discussions with a Jet Club and entertaining their offer of $2000 annually with a free reign of the facility. Objection by members was two-fold: first that the proposal contemplated excessive use of the airport for a small fee and second that the Airport Manager should have been handling interaction with the club, not the Chair of the Commission who they felt was overstepping his authority. Airport Manager Isabelle Davis expressed frustration over the Chairman conducting private site visits with the club without involving the full commission or management.

There is significant internal disagreement regarding the official roster of the Airport Commission with the Airport Manager noting that the City of Gardner website does not list current member names or term expiration dates. Questions were raised regarding whether all sitting members were properly sworn in, as some attendees recalled only 4 members being sworn in at a previous session. Some members also disputed a tie-breaking vote cast by Chair James Woods in February, indicating that the vote cast by Woods might have been illegal. Chair Woods suggested those contesting the result seek clarification from the Mayor’s office. Further contentious discussion ensued when Wood proposed adopting “Robert’s Rules of Order” to limit discussion times – that motion was defeated.

In other matters, the commission voted to raise the price of jet fuel to $6.50 per gallon, even though it was purchased at $4.85 per gallon because replacement cost is now about a dollar higher. Another heated debate occurred regarding the qualifications required for volunteers to operate airport equipment noting that unlicensed operation poses a severe legal risk.

According to Drought.gov, the number of people in Worcester County affected by drought is down almost 90 percent since last month. However, Worcester County had the 9th driest February on record over the last 132 years. While not currently predicted to be as severe, drought conditions are expected to persist this month and this season. Since open burning season is January 15 to May 1st (still almost a month left) it’s reasonable to be concerned about the fire danger. “Massachusetts firefighters answer the call in every corner of our state and our job is to make sure they have what they need to do it safely,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We’re investing in the equipment that protects them on the front lines and strengthening departments in more than 300 communities so they can continue protecting all of us.”

“We rely so heavily on firefighters in our most challenging moments,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “This program allows us to show our appreciation for the risks that they take to help us every day by providing them with the equipment they need to stay safe.”

Fire departments across Massachusetts were invited to apply to the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program, which provides reimbursement on purchases of nearly 100 different types of equipment. Eligible items include hoses and nozzles, turnout gear, ballistic protective equipment, portable and mobile radios, thermal imaging cameras, hand tools and extrication equipment, hazardous gas meters, and more. In many cases, the purchase of this equipment will help departments attain compliance with Occupational Safety & Health Administration or National Fire Protection Association safety standards.

“Firefighters face immediate danger at fires, structural collapses, hazmat incidents, and countless other calls,” said Secretary of Public Safety & Security Gina Kwon. “They also face the insidious threat of occupational cancer from exposure to toxic gases and substances. The Firefighter Safety Equipment Grants support equipment to protect them from all these risks.”

“The Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program funds the tools, gear, and equipment that our firefighters use to protect themselves, each other, and the residents of their communities,” said State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine. “It’s a smart investment in safety for the fire service and the Commonwealth.”

Westminster PD Press Release Explains Large Police Presence Yesterday in the Town

On Monday, March 23, 2026 at approximately 4:42pm, officers from the Westminster Police Department responded to a residence on South Ashburnham Road to serve an arrest warrant on a 22 year old male Westminster resident. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the individual who was shot by officers after allegedly moving towards them with a large knife. While medical aid was rendered to the suspect at the scene, he was transported to a Worcester area hospital and pronounced deceased.

Westminster PD emphasized that no Westminster Police officers were physically injured and that it was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community. Officers involved are on administrative lead per standard protocol. Investigation continues by Massachusetts State Police and the Westminster Police Department. The suspect’s name was not released.
Winchendon Fire 3-20-26 (3/20/2026)

Abandoned Winchendon Factory Burns to the Ground – No Injuries Reported

Just before 4am on Friday, March 20, 2026 firefighters from Winchendon, Gardner and 6 other area Fire Departments responded to 283 Lincoln Avenue Extension in Winchendon which was the site of the former White Mountain Freezer Company. The 3 story building was fully engulfed with heat so intense that the siding of some nearby homes actually melted. Photos in our graphic are from those posted by the Gardner Fire Department.

This is the statement released by the Winchendon Fire Department: “Structure Fire – 283 Lincoln Avenue Extension. On March 20, 2026, at approximately 3:38 a.m., the Winchendon Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire at a large, abandoned mill building located at 283 Lincoln Avenue Extension.

Upon arrival, Shift Commander Tyler Pelkey reported a fully involved three-story abandoned mill building with multiple exposures and immediately requested a second alarm. Due to the size and intensity of the fire, a third alarm was subsequently struck, bringing additional personnel and apparatus to the scene.”

“Winchendon Fire and Police Departments acted swiftly to evacuate residents from Brown Avenue, located directly behind the fire building, as a precautionary measure. Fire crews prioritized protecting nearby residential structures and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent homes. Two additional mill-style buildings located across the street sustained minor fire damage from spot fires; however, crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish these extensions.

Firefighters remained on scene throughout the morning and early afternoon conducting overhaul operations. An excavator was utilized to assist with extinguishing persistent hot spots. As of approximately 1:50 p.m., operations were concluding, and residents were permitted to return to their homes. However, power restoration in the area is expected to require extensive work.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Gardner Fire Department, Templeton Fire Department, Ashburnham Fire Department, Westminster Fire Department, Royalston Fire Department, Jaffrey Fire Department, Rindge Fire Department, Gardner Fire EMS, and the Ashburnham Drone Unit. Richmond Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.

The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office and the District 8 Fire Investigation Unit responded to the scene and are actively investigating the cause of the fire. The Department of Fire Services Rehabilitation Unit was also on scene to support the firefighters.

The Winchendon Fire Department extends its appreciation to the Winchendon Police Department, Winchendon Dispatch Center, Winchendon Building Inspector, National Grid and the Winchendon Water Department for their assistance during this incident. No injuries were reported.”

Different communities have different deadlines. In the City of Gardner, the deadline to license your dog is March 31^st. The fee is $15 or only $11 if your dog is fixed, or even FREE if you, the owner are over 70 years old. In all cases, you must still license your dog and proof of a valid rabies vaccination is required.

Firefighter Graduates March 2026 (3/19/2026)

Phillipston and Templeton Firefighters among Graduates of Call/Volunter Recruit Class #124

The 33 members of Call/Volunteer Recruit Class #124 graduated at the Department of Fire Services’ main campus in Stow on the night of March 11. They represent the fire departments of Athol, Ayer, Douglas, Grafton, Hardwick, Hatfield, Lincoln, Medfield, Mendon, Millbury, Millville, Northbridge, Orange, Pepperell, Phillipston, Sherborn, Sterling, Sturbridge, Templeton, and West Boylston. In the class: Phillipston Firefighter Ryan Levesque and Templeton Firefighter Mat Demar.

“Massachusetts Firefighting Academy instructors draw on decades of experience in the fire service to train new recruits,” said MFA Recruit Program Coordinator Dean Babineau. “Through consistent classroom instruction and practical exercises, these graduates have developed the tools they’ll need to protect themselves, their communities, and each other.”

The Call/Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training Program is unique in that it delivers a standard recruit training curriculum, meeting national standards, on nights and weekends to accommodate the schedule of firefighters in suburban and rural areas. Making the training more accessible means more firefighters can participate and allows them more time to practice training skills with instructors.

The MFA, a division of the Department of Fire Services, has offered the program since 2003. More than 3,000 call and volunteer recruits have graduated since then.

Editorial – What Makes Gardner PD Great

I listened to the Gardner City Council meeting on March 16, 2026 and it was filled with life in a few ways. First the lively sound of a very happy baby who I am convinced was intrigued by the political process and will one day be a City Councilor, Mayor or a Police Officer.

Then, there was some sound you could hardly hear coming from the Hall. I suspect it was the sound of all the police officers who came to support the 3 officers who were sworn in on March 16^th because later I saw these photos posted by Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson.. It is a wonderful testament to the type of cooperative Police Department Chief Eric McAvene and Deputy Chief Nicolaus Maroni have built in the last few years and why the Gardner PD gets so many compliments.

Car Crash into Burger King (3/13/2026)

Summary: Car crash resulted in no injuries. Building sustained damage, but Burger King expected to be open later today, March 13th, or at the latest, the morning of March 14th.

Car Crashes into Gardner MA Burger King

On the afternoon of March 13, 2026, the Gardner Fire Department received a call that a car had crashed into the Gardner Burger King on Timpany Boulevard.

The Gardner Fire Department released this statement: “This afternoon, Gardner Fire Group 3 responded to Burger King for a reported car into the building. On arrival, crews found a single vehicle had crashed into the building, luckily with no injuries to the driver or anyone inside the restaurant. The building sustained moderate damage. The building Commissioner and Board Of Health also responded to the scene. Gardner Police are investigating the accident.”

While there were no injuries to the driver or anyone in the restaurant, the building sustained substantial damage. (see photo collage) Fortunately, the area involved was not the main seating area and did not affect the kitchen or cooking areas. Gardner Magazine spoke with Burger King management who told us that they had to close for a short while after the incident, but expect to be open later today March 13th or at the very latest on March 14th. Management agreed to call us if there is further information, but it looks like your Saturday Whopper is still on the menu.

Hubbardston Bridge Closure (3/2/2026)

Work is beginning on the Burnshirt River Bridge in Hubbardston and the bridge is closed. The construction project to replace the inferior bridge will last for over a year. Detour will utilize Burnshirt Road, Thompson Road, and Kruse Road. Expect delays.

Mayor’s Update – February 27, 2026

Mayor Nicholson advised that several technical barriers have been discovered which are preventing residents from receiving critical alerts. Residents who may not have received a call this season are urged to reregister via the City website or by calling the Mayor’s office. Barriers identified include residents ignoring calls because the phone number is not from a 978 area code, mobile devices getting caught by a spam blockers which requires callers to Press 1 to proceed, and devices set on airplane mode which diverts calls directly to voicemail.

The Mayor reminded residents of several deadlines and events which are shown in the infographic below and stated that projects will resume once the snow is gone.

Gardner PD Highlights Recent Hires

New officers hired last year and this year at the Gardner Police Department have helped replenish the ranks as vacancies occured by departures and retirements.

The Gardner PD released this information: “Over the past several months the Gardner PD has had multiple officers join the GPD team.

On May 19,2025 Officer Russell Counts Joined GPD. He brings 14 years of police experience from Jupiter, FL PD. We are honored to have him as a member of our team and has been a great addition.

On September 12, 2025 Officer Christoper Black graduated from the Fitchburg State University Police Academy and has completed his 10 week FTO program and is now patrolling in the Gardner Community. We are excited to have him as a member of our department and look forward to watching him grow as an officer.

On December 12,2025 Officer Michael King graduated from the Holyoke police academy. Graduation ceremonies were held on the UMass Amherst campus. Officer King is a resident of Gardner and is currently finishing the final phase of his 10 week FTO program.

Lastly, On January 29,2026 Officer Derek Wight graduated from the first Marlborough Academy (formerly Boylston Police Academy) where the ceremonies were held at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester. Officer Wight is currently in his first phase of FTO 10 week program where he will ride with a veteran officer who will help coach him on being an officer in the Gardner Community.

These new officers have helped fill vacancies and recent officer retirements. We are honored that they have chosen Gardner PD and look forward to seeing what the future will bring to the PD. Congratulations gentlemen!”

State Representative Jonathan Zlotnik Announces the House Passage of Bills Regarding Apprenticeships in Public Construction and Heart Health at Sporting Events

Press Release:

BOSTON, MA – Representative Jonathan Zlotnik (D-Gardner) joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing bills regarding apprenticeships in public construction and requiring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at facilities that host sporting events.

Looking to sustain the future of the state’s trades workforce, H.4994-An Act relative to preparing apprentices in the Commonwealth, was passed by the House of Representatives in a 154-1 vote. The bill requires that public construction projects that cost at least $10 million to use apprentices. It would also implement a scaled increase in percentage of all hours worked on these public construction projects to be performed by apprentices, culminating in 15% of all hours after four years. Further, the bill would require apprentices in the Commonwealth to be registered in programs approved by the Division of Apprentice Standards and employed in compliance with any ratios implemented by the Division.

In addition to the apprenticeship bill, the House of Representatives also passed H.4993-An Act requiring automated external defibrillators at sporting events in a 154-1 vote. The bill requires public stadiums, sporting centers, gymnasiums, and other facilities that play host to athletic events to have at least one AED device on site during any events. While there have been regulations requiring AED devices in public schools, there was previously no requirement for AED devices at facilities hosting sporting events in the Commonwealth. The bill not only promotes heart health for spectators at these sporting events, but also represents a way to combat incidents of sudden cardiac arrest.

Following their passage in the House of Representatives, H.4994 and H.4993 will now advance to the State Senate for debate and passage.

Pesky White Stuff Infiltrates Security and Falls in Greater Gardner Region

On February 7, 2026, snow was falling in Greater Gardner and by mid morning a few inches had already fallen in some places. Public and Private plowing teams were already committed to a mission of ridding the roads of the white villain which was observed slowing down traffic throughout the area for safety purposes. Shoppers were out, albeit in smaller numbers than the average Saturday morning, and the trees were punctuated by white accents which came from the sky.

While snow is in the forecast on Saturday, the danger turns to cold later in the day with this forecast: Today: Snow, mainly before 3pm. Temperature falling to around 11 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as -5. Northwest wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -5. Wind chill values as low as -24. Northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.

Sunday Mostly sunny, with a high near 13. Wind chill values as low as -24. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Sunday Night Mostly clear, with a low around -1. Wind chill values as low as -17. Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Fire, Police, and Health Departments Focus of January Public Safety Meeting

Fire Chief Gregory Lagoy gave a report and a significant trend emerged: the demand on Gardner’s emergency services has never been higher, with first responders handling a total of 6,324 incidents in 2025 which represents a 4.6% increase over the previous year. The department is full staffed.

Gardner Police Chief Eric McAvene spoke of how a creative partnership with Monty Tech is saving taxpayers a fortune. The PD is leveraging the skills of students in programs like carpentry and plumbing so that the project of building out the City’s Emergency Operations Center will cost under $10,000.

Overtime budgets of both the Fire and Police Departments are strained, with Fire already in the red and PD anticipating its overtime budget will not last until the end of the year.

Yes, Gardner City Hall is open once again on Thursday, January 29, 2026 after being closed all week so far, first due to the storm and then due to the boiler issue. Does anyone know what the name of the boiler is? Gardner Magazine will let you know when we find out.
Fire Gardner 1-29 (1/29/2026)

Fire at 123 Grow Child Center – Daycare in Gardner

The Gardner Fire Department responded to a fire this morning at the 123 Grow Child CenterDaycare at 838 West Broadway in Gardner MA. As shown in the photograph as of 8am, the location was ablaze and required a 2^nd alarm.

Over 100 concerned residents and parents reached out on Facebook to express their concerns about the fire and love of the Daycare center.

Gardner Magazine will provide more details as they become available. The photo in our graphic shows the fire underway.

The fire is out. The building is heavily damaged and an employee of the City confirmed 2 things: The building is a total loss and there were no injuries of personnel or children. However, two Gardner Firefighters had minor injuries, but did not require transport to the hospital. We took the photos below about noon on January 29th:

PRESS RELEASE : On January 29, 2026, at 04:45 hours the Gardner Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a building fire on West Broadway in the vicinity of the intersection with Airport Road. First arriving Fire Department units reported heavy fire in the rear attic area of a one story structure and struck a Second Alarm, bring recalled off-duty Gardner Firefighters and multiple mutual aid units to the scene. Firefighters initiated an interior attack, but heavy fire conditions forced them to exit the building and switch to a defensive exterior operation. Firefighters were hampered by extreme cold temperatures and deep snow conditions which caused equipment to freeze and ice to quickly form around the scene.

The address of the involved building is 838 West Broadway, occupied by the 1-2-3 Grow Child Care Center. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and is considered a total loss.

Mutual aid responded to the scene from the Towns of Westminster, Winchendon, Ashburnham, Hubbardston, and Templeton. Station coverage in Gardner was provided by the Athol, Fitchburg, and Leominster Fire Departments. Two Gardner Firefighters suffered minor injuries that did not require transport to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire District 8 Fire Investigation Unit and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Originally, Gardner had a 2 hour delay: Superintendent Mark Pellegrino put out this statement to parents and kids: “Good morning, Gardner Public School families. Unfortunately, Gardner Public Schools will need to be closed today, January 27^th, Snow plowing has become increasingly difficult as we search for spots to place the snow. My maintenance director says plowing is like a white out game of Tetris. Kids, Tetris is an ancient computer game, created way back in the 1900’s. I’m sure you can find it online. It’s still a lot of fun and research even says that improves brain function and you know what? I digress. The important message is that there is no school today, January 27^th, the Gardner Public Schools, So maybe go out and help shovel and then go sledding this afternoon. Thanks for your attention. Storm Update 1-26-26 7pm (1/26/2026)

Storm Update Statement from Mayor Nicholson January 26, 2026 at 7pm

The second round of the storm is here! We’ve had about 18 inches of snow so far with more on the way tonight. Here’s another long information post.

Gardner Public Schools will have a 2-hr delay tomorrow. (Jan 27)

The on-street parking ban is still in effect and has been extended to 7am on Jan 27. There will be a municipal parking lot ban after parking is allowed on the streets again, from 7am to 10am, so the plows can fully clear the municipal lots. Please keep these bans in mind and don’t get a ticket/towed.

DPW crews and contractors are still out plowing. Please give plows the space they need to be safe while clearing the streets so we can be safe too. During my ride-along yesterday, I was surprised how many people drove around to pass the plows. This isnt safe for the plow crews, and the road infront of them isn’t plowed yet and not as safe to drive on as it is behind them. Please be patient. They have been working since before 9am yesterday. Thank you to the DPW crews for their dedication to the City!

All areas of the City that had power outages yesterday have had power restored. Thank you to the linemen from National Grid for the repairs made to the transformers in the Washington Hills Neighborhood the storm.

The Gardner Fire Department put out a request for residents to help clear fire hydrants around the city to make sure we are prepared should any emergency situations arise.

I’ve signed an Executive Order suspending the parking meters from now through February 6. The City Code has an ordinance that states that the owners of the downtown buildings are responsible for clearing the snow on the sidewalks in front of their buildings with a path that allows for pedestrian travel. The snow banks are very high- with some meters fully buried. The DPW’s first priority is to clear the streets and then the sidewalks within 1.5 miles of the schools, per state and local regulations. In order to clear the banks on the sidewalks, the plowing equipment has to be taken off the front-end loaders and the salting devices taken out of the dump trucks, so that the snow on the sidewalks can be hauled away. This process can take 1-2 days to do. To make sure this doesn’t cause delays with plowing operations, this is usually done when we know there isn’t another storm coming that would need plowing/salting. We are working to schedule a day to cut down the snow banks in the downtown and South Gardner center, but until that day is scheduled, parking downtown will be meter free. The 3-hour parking limit is still in effect.

Once again, thank you to the Gardner DPW, our Public Safety Personnel, National Grid crews, and everyone else who’s worked over the last day and a half through the storm to keep us all safe.

Storm Dumps Over a Foot of Snow – Greater Gardner MA Digging Out

Area Schools are Closed. City Hall is closed. Other town offices are closed. Some Businesses are closed, waiting until tomorrow to reopen. The Greater Gardner area is digging out from over a foot of snow. There is still a Winter Storm Warning in effect and the possibility of a few more inches falling before tonight

As of noon on January 26, 2026, there were 37 active power outages affecting 954 customers in Massachusetts. 3 minutes later that was down to 428 customers. The largest outage affecting over 2000 customers just North of Attleboro, MA has apparently been resolved. A power outage in Gardner due to a car hitting a pole was resolved yesterday within a couple of hours.

As of noon on January 26th, about 800,000 customers were still without power in other states, many hit hard with ice which took down trees and power wires.

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson provides information relating to the Storm

Here is the Mayor’s statement from just before noon on Sunday January 25, 2026 – Note that while the Mayor describes a possible 4 inch per hour rate, the National Weather Service official prediction is for ½ inch per hour. If in fact we do get 4 inches per hour, we will significantly exceed predictions.

Statement from Mayor Michael Nicholson: “It’s started snowing in Gardner. This is a long post with a lot of information.

We’re predicted to get a lot of snow. Please check in on your neighbors and loved ones as the storm continues. Every year in Gardner we get on average 30-40 9-1-1 calls from people having medical emergencies due to over-exertion from shoveling snow- everything from sprains and falls to heart attacks and embolisms. Some have been fatal. If you’re feeling tired, take a break. If the snow looks too much, call someone for help.

The Gardner Police Department community room has been activated as a warming center. There is an on-street parking ban in effect.

DPW crews are already out salting and pre-treating the streets. They’ve been in since early this morning preparing the equipment, loading the trucks with salt, and getting ready for the storm.

Gardner has just over 100 miles of road. We currently have around 2,000+/- tons of salt on hand in our salt shed. It takes around 100 tons of salt to do one salting round through the whole City.

Have have around 30 pieces of plowing equipment ready to be deployed when plowing begins. These vary from larger dump trucks, pick up trucks, and frontend loaders for the narrower/steeper streets.

These trucks are divided up into 25 different routes around the city that they continue to circle through during the storm. On average it takes about 3 hours from beginning to end of that route. So if you see a plow go by your house, it’ll likely be 3 hours before you see it go by again on their assigned route.

Some predictions have this storm having snow at a rate of 4 inches per hour. That means that there could be around 8-12 inches of snow accumulated on the street before the plow has a chance to get there. Please be patient and try to avoid all unnecessary travel when possible. Stay safe.

Lastly- a HUGE thank you to our DPW crews and plow contractors who have already been in for a while and who have a long day/night ahead of them, and to our public safety personnel working today. We have a great, dedicated team in Gardner who do a lot of work to keep us safe.”

Storm Coverage 1-24-26 (1/24/2026)

Greater Gardner MA in the 12 inch Plus Range for Snow

The National Weather Service says it has High Confidence that snow will begin between 9am and 3pm on Sunday with the heaviest snow occurring between 3pm Sunday and 1am Monday. In addition, light to moderate snow is likely to occur much of Monday. Travel will obviously be difficult and we can almost assume that all area schools will be closed on Monday. As far as confidence in the actual amount of snow, NWS lists that as Medium overall, but HIGH CONFIDENCE that in this area we will get a total of a foot or more of the white stuff.

Low temperatures will also be an issue with actual temperatures in the single digits Saturday and Sunday with wind chill factors below zero. High temperatures from Monday through Friday of next week are only expected to be in the teens, rising to slightly above 20 degrees by Saturday and maybe close to 30 degrees by about a week from now. Bottom Line: Highly dangerous travel conditions and dangerous cold. Silver lining: Because we are getting snow and not ICE like some areas down South, power outages are less likely for this region.

Warming Shelters: The Community Room at the Gardner Police Station is available from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Check with your community for specific plans at your location.

Salt Shortage – Templeton (1/22/2026)

Town of Templeton Plans to Salt Roads After Storm is over on Monday due to Salt Shortage

Due to a shortage of road salt, the Town of Templeton has announced that it will salt the roads on Monday after the storm ends. Here is the Press Release from the Town of Templeton: “We have been notified by our road salt vendor of a regional shortage of road salt due to salt vessels stuck out at sea in storms. Templeton has several loads ordered but will not receive anymore deliveries until mid of next week.

The Town’s ability to fully treat all roadways is limited at this time. With inclement weather continuing through the weekend, residents are urged to use extreme caution when traveling. Road conditions may be icy and slippery, particularly on untreated side streets, hills, bridges, and shaded areas. Please slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Pedestrians are also reminded to use caution on sidewalks and walkways. (Please be safe)

DPW crews will continue to monitor conditions and prioritize main roads, emergency routes, and public safety areas as resources allow. We appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation as we work through this temporary supply issue. Templeton DPW plans are as follows: pretreatment will be to use brine if road conditions cooperate.

Once we get plowable snow, trucks will be plowing throughout the storm. We have enough road salt to treat the town twice which will be after the storm is over on Monday. Thank You for your patience and understanding.”

Drug Bust 1-20-26 (1/20/2026)

Multiple Law Enforcement Agencies Involved in Major Drug Bust Involving Locations in Gardner and Leominster

The Gardner Police Department announced in a Press Release – COMPLETE PRESS RELEASE CLICK HERE – that two individuals were arrested on January 20, 2026 and charged with trafficking fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine as well as other associated charges. $9,900 in cash was seized along with other items associated with drug distribution. Both suspects have been arraigned in Gardner District Court.

Members of the DEA Worcester HIDTA task force, North Worcester County Drug Task Force, and Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit had executed two search warrants simultaneously. Details in Press Release, CLICK HERE.
