Community Garden at St. Paul’s in Gardner MA Now has 27 Beds

Originally established 2 years ago with a $3000 grant from the Diocese, the Community Garden located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Cross Street in Gardner almost doubled its capacity in 2023 and now has more than 2 dozen beds. Mayor Michael Nicholson posted on April 28th,”Big shout out to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Gardner MA for starting up their community gardens again this year to support the Gardner CAC! They are adding even more raised beds to bring the total to 27! Thanks for all you do for the City and it’s residents! “. Fresh produce grown on the property is distributed to area families by the CAC.

The sign states “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” – Matthew 25:35. Distribution of food grown will occur through the Food Pantry of the Community Action Committee. The CAC serves disadvantaged individuals in Gardner, Ashburnham, Baldwinville, Hubbardston, Otter River, Templeton, and Westminster. Gardner CAC website, CLICK HERE. According to the Church, “”Many faces, one faith. We are a diverse group of believers – bankers, musicians, social workers, teachers, public servants, business owners, parents  – united by our shared faith in a loving God.” Sunday services are at 10am

  • Man intentionally hit by car in Milford after argument over parking
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker on May 4, 2024 at 10:20 pm

A man was allegedly intentionally struck by a car in Milford, Massachusetts, after he got into a verbal argument with another man over where he was parked overnight. Milford police say they responded to Milford Regional Hospital around 4:09 a.m. Saturday to talk with a man who walked in for treatment after being hit by a car. The victim told officers that he got into a verbal altercation with another man around 2:28 a.m. after he told him that he was parked in the middle of the road. As he was walking away, the victim reportedly heard the acceleration of an engine before he was struck and flipped over the car. Milford police responded to the scene of the collision and found items belonging to the victim, as well as pooled blood. A subsequent investigation led officers to Alejandro Gonzalez, police say. The 28-year-old Milford man was arrested at 5:48 a.m. and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of personal injury, operating a motor vehicle negligently so as to endanger, and marked lanes violation. It was not immediately clear when Gonzalez was due in court. Further information was not provided.

  • Taunton man, 32, found shot to death in shed
by Kaitlin McKinley Becker and Erin Logan on May 4, 2024 at 4:33 pm

A 32-year-old man was found dead Saturday morning in Taunton, Massachusetts, and a homicide investigation is underway. Information is limited at this point, but the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced it is actively investigating a homicide that occurred sometime Saturday morning on Highland Street. According to the DA’s office, Taunton police responded to 155 Highland Street around 9:45 a.m. for a report of a dead man in a furnished shed. Investigators on scene determined the victim had been shot to death. He was identified late Saturday night as Jhonny Lajoie. Police tape was blocking off a large, yellow home for much of the day Saturday, with crime scene technicians and homicide detectives on scene investigating for nearly 12 hours. Neighbors like Bob Pollard were shocked to see the heavy police presence, saying they’ve never witnessed anything like this. Pollard said when he returned from his grandson’s game, he was hoping it was an accident, but shortly after, he and his wife realized it had to be worse. “We knew it had to be a murder or suicide. Something crazy. Like what has happened?” Pollard said. “Just awful, awful for the family.” Pollard, who has lived in the neighborhood his whole life, tells NBC10 Boston that he doesn’t know who lives across the street but that he believes it’s a group of younger guys who often hang out in the shed. “I’ve seen them in there, you know, having parties or something like that,” Pollard said, noting that he walks his dog all the time. No information has been released on a possible suspect, or motive in the killing. The DA’s office tells NBC10 Boston that there is no reason to suspect the public is in any danger in regards to this incident. A number of neighbors say they still feel safe, as Pollard adds he believes this was an isolated incident. The investigation is extremely active, and further details cannot be released at this time, officials said.

  • 84-year-old arrested for stabbing deaf woman in East Boston
by Michael Rosenfield and Thea DiGiammerino on May 4, 2024 at 1:22 pm

An 84-year-old man was arrested in connection to a stabbing in East Boston on Friday afternoon. Investigators swarmed a Brandywyne Drive apartment community Friday after a call came in that a resident had been stabbed in the neck. The resident, a deaf woman, was brought to a hospital with what was initially believed to be life-threatening injuries. While at the hospital, it was determined the woman’s injuries were non-life threatening, police said. “I never would have thought it would be her,” said resident Elizabeth Clay. Neighbors say the woman who was stabbed is deaf, very friendly, and well-known at the Brandywyne Village apartments. The man was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a disabled person with injury, armed assault in a dwelling, and assault to murder. They have not said if the two had any connection, or if this was a random attack. “She didn’t have enemies,” said neighbor Camille Racca. Neighbors say they heard the woman screaming in the middle of the afternoon, and then she ran to the office for help. “It’s too bad somebody would pick on somebody that’s deaf,” said Racca. The man was later transported to a local hospital for an evaluation and will be arraigned in the East Boston District Court. Get updates on what’s happening in Boston to your inbox. • Dry and mild Saturday continues in New England
by David Bagley on May 4, 2024 at 12:40 pm

High pressure anchored to the north of New England will keep us dry & mild today, but coastal communities will still have to deal with a persistent and cool onshore flow.  Expect some sunshine early this afternoon along the coastline, with inland locations seeing more in the way of clouds, eventually those clouds move east as a frontal boundary well west of New England slowly marches eastward.  Northeast wind switching to east later today will keep the coastline in check with temps reaching the low to mid 50s, 60s will be common well inland.  Lots of clouds around tonight but stays on the dry side.  A few areas of patchy fog develop with a light wind out of the east-southeast.  Lows in the 40s. Sunday is looking mostly dry around the Boston area with the shower threat increasing later in the day as frontal boundary presses through New England.  Overall, the day will be on the cloudy side with rain showers breaking out over western sections of New England during the early to mid-morning hours.  Rain moves into central and northern New England by the mid-afternoon, and in the Boston area by the evening.  Highs mid 50s, few low 60s inland and across central and northern Maine. Showers will continue overnight Sunday and exit the coast by the mid-morning hours on Monday with winds shifting to the south helping to usher in warmer temperatures by the afternoon.  Much of Monday afternoon is looking dry with sunshine and clouds but can’t rule out a stray shower with temperatures rising into the 70s, cooler along the immediate south facing coastlines and Cape. Tuesday looks like the pick of next week with highs soaring into the 70s, maybe pull off a few low 80s inland? We’ll see!  The onshore flow returns mid-week with showers retuning which is featured on our Exclusive 10-Day Forecast. Have a great Saturday!
