Columbus Day commemorates the arrival in the Americas of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and it is a Federal holiday in the United States and several other countries. However, there is also some opposition to the holiday particularly in the United States and Latin America where many jurisdictions have replaced it with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” or similar holidays that recognize native resistance and cultural diversity. The “Deep Dive” covers it all. Many Latin American nations have also shifted to names honoring indigenous populations.
